@Joey

This is a one of a kind plug, I imagine its running something like

I haven't quite figured that out yet. I would like to turn it into a wireless router with attached SATA drive but I never had luck getting OPENWRT to enable use of any of the wifi adapters (mini-pci-e or USB) I have. I think they updated the rootfs so perhaps I will try it again.

Something like that. If I was a real hacker, I'de figure out how to run Windows 10 iOT or even true Raspian. But I'm more a tinkerer than true hacker. In the words of Detective Callahan "A man's got to know his limitations."

As a capstone to this thread, I did finally succeed in setting up this Pro as an OpenWRT wireless AP. Using the 15.01 rootfs, once I figured out the right kmods to load to enable the Atheros 300M wireless card I had installed and did some reading up on OpenWRT AP settings, the setup performs great. In fact it slightly out performs the consumer router in the house. Signal levels with the dual antennas are pretty good with a robust footprint around the device. My next "challenge" with this plug is setting up a one physical ethernet device VLAN coupled with a cheap "easy smart" managed switch so I can segregate WAN from LAN and make the setup more like a true router / AP device. Not the easiest endeavor as each time I try a different setting I end up "bricking" it and have to break out the serial console. I'll get there eventually and post how I did once I do.

I have the Pro running OpenWRT 15.05 using the stock Ralink RT3090 PCIe wifi card. It works as a client but have been unable to configure it as an AP. Would you be willing to exchange configuration files? Easy to do in LuCI - System - Backup - Generate archive.

@dexter

stock Ralink RT3090 PCIe wifi card. just doesnt cut it - you should replace it with some other card, preferably atheros based, then install the modules for the atheros unit

Mine works great as a client with Debian using firmware-ralink and OpenWRT with kmod-rt2800-pci. But not in AP mode. It there a hardware or driver issue with using it as an AP?

Not if you get the right card. In my case it's a Atheros AR9287. I had to configure the network in a way that was not intuitive. I am not with that plug ATM but will retrieve the settings once I am.
