Pogoplug No Longer Allows You to Enable SSH ??

The backdoor method didn't work for me for a recent Pro and Mobile model that I purchased. I suppose it's possible it works still on a very specific firmware version, but both my devices were on older firmware 2.x and 3.x (not latest) and the backdoor failed.

Submitted for your amusement: Check out the date on this "Knowledge Base" entry on how to enable SSH access on Pogoplug.com. Did they really post these instructions a week ago?

https://support.pogoplug.com/hc/en-us/articles/202307860-How-do-I-enable-SSH-

In case they delete it, it has the old "enable SSH over the internet" instructions, which as far as I know stopped working at least a year ago:

How do I enable SSH?

Follow
SSH is disabled by default for security reasons.

To enable SSH, go to Settings in the Web interface, select Security Settings, and then select the checkbox for Enable SSH for this Pogoplog-enabled device. A dialog box will open and ask you to assign a password for the root user.

Note: While SSH is applicable, this method of access subjects the device to firmware changes and therefore, voids Pogoplug 1-year warranty

I sent them a nasty support ticket message, which I'm guessing will never be seen by human eyes.

Having contributed some humor in my last post, now I have a question or two...

I have two Pogoplug Mobiles that I currently can't make serial connections to. They both seem to have the little blob of solder missing from the GND connector on the circuit board (the other three dots all have a little bit of solder bulging up from the board). I don't have a soldering iron so I've been just taping bare wires, which has worked on another Pogo Mobile, but I think I'm just not getting a good connection on the two boards that have the missing solder on the GND terminal.

Can I just connect the Ground wire from my CP2102 adapter to a piece of exposed metal like the SD card cage or the ethernet connector, or is there another spot on the board where I can make an easier Ground connection?

I've heard people talk about using "pins" to connect to the board - can anyone point me to a description or instructions of how to do that or even just what such a pin would look like?

Lastly and unrelated, can someone definitively settle the question of whether, with a CP210x adapter, you should connect RX->RX & TX->TX or swap/cross them? I first heard they should be swapped, then learned that with a CP210x they should NOT be swapped, and then I've seen conflicting claims. The most convincing statements indicate NOT swapping RX&TX, but I could swear that I was making serial connections work before I read that.

Definitive answer: The CP210x have wires already crossed. So you should not swap TX and RX.

Any exposed metal grounding point can be used, the ones you have identified are suitable,

Some on here have used shirt pins.... yes the pins you get when you unpack a new shirt.

*waves in JoeyPogoplug direction for links to his amazing shirt pin through the board hack :))

so i got a Pogoplug series 4 pogo-v4.a3.01 off ebay for 5 bucks. read some stuff here in the forums.
soldered a uart cable, enabled ssh. just for the heck of it, can https: / port 443 be re-enabled to toy around
with the backdoor from the web interface? only ports that are open are 22, 23, 80, 3333, 3334.

HBPlug Diagnostics
Diagnostics only available over HTTPS

I dont posess a pogoplug since moving a couple of years ago - however, i dont see a reason why it cant be enabled. you owuld need to find the file that hosts the httpd config and amend there then save

If you cannot log in stock OS, then run kwboot with the u-boot-2017.07-tld-1 image in my release thread. And then boot into the Debian rootfs Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 (26 Sept 2021) on USB.

Basically bypass everything about stock, and go straight to Debian that way. And then install u-boot-2017.07-tld-1 while running Debian.

Hey, good for you.

But perhaps you should not treat pogoplugs like garbage? Once upon the time, they were a good vehicle for you to learn Embbeded Linux hacking :))

I have to second this as I have acquired 5 various Pogoplug's over the years and still use them for Time Machine backups, Pi-hole servers and just all around learning. I knew nothing about Linux before owning them. Thanks to these devices, and espcially this website, I consider myself a very experienced Linux user today!

Hello,

Recently I have acquired a Pogoplug E-02 but I am totally unfamiliar with it. I have connected it to LAN and tried to log via IP address - no success (I do not know if that was possible at first place). I searched google, but most of the treads suggest to replace stock OS with Arch/Debian. What I need is only to install/enable Samba and use the device as simple NAS. Is it possible that to be done on stock OS?
