That's expected. Your uboot envs are old :) but it could be fixed later. For now boot without the UltraFit. And plug it in after.

It is fine now. But we want to format it with ext4:

mkfs.ext4 -L JoeyUSB3 /dev/sdb1

root@DebianPlug:~# mkfs.ext4 -L JoeyUSB3 /dev/sdb1
mke2fs 1.42.12 (29-Aug-2014)
/dev/sdb1 contains a vfat file system
Proceed anyway? (y,n) y
Creating filesystem with 7507808 4k blocks and 1880480 inodes
Filesystem UUID: 9f257101-0b9a-47b2-8682-d146b5d2cc72

Allocating group tables: done
Writing inode tables: done
Creating journal (32768 blocks):

It's either taking a while or stalled. I'll wait a little bit. Worse comes to worse I could format it Ext4 w 4k blocks from Partition Wizard on ThinClient.

Probably not bright of me to run that when it's supposedly formatting, but with another instance of puTTY I tried, and heres' the result:

I don't see it labeled "JoeyUSB3" but let me know and I can format it Ext4 on ThinClient. What I see encourages me a lot!

-update- I see the format hadn't changed the FAT32 on the USB stick.I'm formatting it Ext4 now but is there a preference for primary or Logical partition? I'll go with Logical for now. See what happens LOL

update 2: No it doesn't boot with the newly-Ext4-formatted USB stick, but that's expected. I'll be nearby for new instructions or repeat old ones

Joey,

It will not booted with the Ultra Fit plugged in because your uboot envs do not allow it. This can be fixed later. For now, unplug it before booting. And then plug it in after you have logged in.

Remove everything in it and create a new partition using

fdisk /dev/sdb

And then run mkfs.ext4 as above again.

Okay, here's where it sits.

root@DebianPlug:~# fdisk /dev/sdb

Welcome to fdisk (util-linux 2.25.2).
Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
Be careful before using the write command.

Command (m for help): mkfs.ext4 -L JoeyUSB3 /dev/sdb1

Help:

  DOS (MBR)
   a toggle a bootable flag
   b edit nested BSD disklabel
c toggle the dos compatibility flag

  Generic
   d delete a partition
   l list known partition types
   n add a new partition
   p print the partition table
   t change a partition type
   v verify the partition table

  Misc
   m print this menu
   u change display/entry units
   x extra functionality (experts only)

  Save & Exit
w write table to disk and exit
   q quit without saving changes

  Create a new label
g create a new empty GPT partition table
G create a new empty SGI (IRIX) partition table
o create a new empty DOS partition table
s create a new empty Sun partition table

Command (m for help):
I went on to enter w but meh, am getting sloppy.
Command (m for help): w
The partition table has been altered.
Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table.
Syncing disks.

update: Bodhi I'd already formatted it Ext4 using Partition Magic in Windows and used the label you gave me. As you may know I'm not Einstein in Linux, but eventually what's important and what's repeated sinks in. So I beg you allow a buffer of incompetency here :-D

update 2: got to get some sleep, but hopefully all's well at your end. No worry nor hurry. I'll check back.

Joey,

If you did that in Windows, then there is no need to format it again whatsoever! so if in doubt do that again in Windows.

We're almost ready to declare victory :) To verify it is working, do the following:

- Boot up the Pogo, and log in as root.
- Plug in the Ultra Fit.
- Get the last 20 lines of kernel log:
dmesg | tail -20
It should show the Ultra Fit was recognized and listed.

- Now do lsusb again to see the drive has file system and label, also to see other info:
lsusb -vvv

- mount the Ultra Fit:
mkdir -p /media/JoeyUSB3
mount /dev/sdb1 /media/JoeyUSB3

- Check the mount:
mount

- change directory to its root folder, and list the content:
cd /media/JoeyUSB3
ls -l

- Try copying some files to it:
cp -av /boot/vm* .

- List the files:
ls -lart *

If you can do all of the above without error then we can declare victory :) we'll do the performance test after you've post the results.

This forum format is hard to manage. I've made a mess when trying to split this thread :) So please continue posting here, until I can stitch them together!

Sorry JeffS, we kind of hijacked this thread for too long. I should have moved the topic :)

Oh yeah, plus it's Einstein's birthday and Pi Day... and things come in threes, so here goes...

Bodhi yes great news, using RDP I can see yes, there's JoeyUSB3 mounted in Media, and I copied a LibreOffice file at blinding speed into it. Very cool! Mwahaaa!

Update... I'm copying an ISO image to JoeyUSB3 having sambashare'd the directory, but the ISO is copying to it at 5.46 MB/sec.
-update- read speed over LAN is 10.3 MB/sec.

My LAN is Gigabit but there's no guarantee it didn't drop to 100 MB/sec in some energy saving mode.So many variables.

* Bodhi, even if it's a worst-case scenario and this isn't fast, I'm really grateful for you trying. This would have bugged me for ages and there's no testing like testing. I haven't' given up and strongly doubt you have either, but for educational value, it was worth the pennies and time and fun, easily.

Joey,

It is not quite there yet. The drive is recognized and usable. But I think your partition was bad.

root@DebianPlug:~# mkdir -p /media/JoeyUSB3
root@DebianPlug:~# mount /dev/sdb1 /media/JoeyUSB3
mount: /dev/sdb1: can't read superblock

> - Check the mount:
 mount
>

root@DebianPlug:~# mount
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)
udev on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,relatime,size=10240k,nr_inodes=14631,mode=755)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,gid=5,mode=620)
tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,size=12092k,mode=755)
/dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,noatime,errors=remount-ro,data=ordered)
tmpfs on /run/lock type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,size=5120k)
tmpfs on /run/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,size=24180k)
tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,relatime)
rpc_pipefs on /run/rpc_pipefs type rpc_pipefs (rw,relatime)

Here is the summary of steps to do.

1. Do dd and hdparm test to get the raw speed without file system

hdparm -Tt /dev/sb1

cd /media/JoeyUSB3
dd if=/dev/zero of=test.img bs=1G count=1 oflag=dsync

2. Use fdisk to wipe out the disk and create one partition.

fdisk /dev/sdb
And then execute the commands to remove all partitions, and create a new one:
o
n
<return> (do this for the remaining questions to choose default answer)
before exiting fdisk
w

3. Reformat it to ext3

mkfs.ext3 -L JoeyUSB3 /dev/sdb1

4. mount the drive using the label (a little bit nicer)

mkdir -p /media/JoeyUSB3
mount -L JoeyUSB3 -o noatime /media/JoeyUSB3

5. Do the files copy test using the rootfs, which is USB2.0 .

6. Do the file copy test using the new USB3.0 drive.

Anybody wants to help can chime in and help Joey fill in the details.

I bought one, but quit it now. only 128 ram only for simple application. running on USB drive also slow. now I swift to orange pi

It's a brand new stick, but maybe it's malfunctioning:

root@DebianPlug:~# hdparm -Tt /dev/sb1
-bash: hdparm: command not found
root@DebianPlug:~# cd /media/JoeyUSB3
root@DebianPlug:/media/JoeyUSB3# dd if=/dev/zero of=test.img bs=1G count=1 oflag=dsync

Bodhi: crazy but I might have hit an identical folder created on the OS stick! I say this because I tried to copy the big iso to a folder next to it, and it said not enough room. Then I did properties on the folder and it's a container of the same size as the OS stick.[/b] This is cool. Deep breath. I'll be nearby. Please check attachment.
OS drive: 8GB Cruzer Glide.
USB 3 stick: 32 GB UltraFit

Joey,

Install hdparm:

apt-get install hdparm

> root@DebianPlug:~# cd /media/JoeyUSB3

> f=test.img bs=1G count=1 oflag=dsync

If there is no output from the dd command, then the partition is no good.

Please see my intruction above for how to erase and create a new partiton. And format it. Do all this in Debian :)

Joey,

Have you tried to format the USB on Mint? I recalled there is GUI apps available for this task. Look in the accessories menu.

It was not mounted. So what you used was the empty mount point folder on OS drive, as you have figured out above!

Yeah I can do that tomorrow. I have several throw-together computers that are having biannual maintenance, and I wasn't sure which to run Mint on. Got several new Mint species on hand though.

* Bodhi, minor correction possibility: did you mean apt-get above and not app-get? Anyway I installed hdparm and got the same result, so I'm apt-get updating the whole stick before proceeding. Start off with a clear head tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Yes, make sure you format the stick using Mint. I don't trust Windows software to do Linux job :)

Thanks, it was a typo.

----

Basically, you need to see it mounted in this mount command output

root@DebianPlug:~# mount

sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)
udev on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,relatime,size=10240k,nr_inodes=14631,mode=755)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,gid=5,mode=620)
tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,size=12092k,mode=755)
/dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,noatime,errors=remount-ro,data=ordered)
tmpfs on /run/lock type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,size=5120k)
tmpfs on /run/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,size=24180k)
tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,relatime)
rpc_pipefs on /run/rpc_pipefs type rpc_pipefs (rw,relatime)
The only drive that was mounted here is sda1 which is the the rootfs on your Cruzer Glide.

And then do this to check capacity:

df -h
It should show the sizes and usage of both sda1 and sdb1.

As you can see I proceeded, and after seeing the error for sdb1 I got the crazy idea to try sdb5 because it was also listed:

root@DebianPlug:~# mkdir -p /media/JoeyUSB3
root@DebianPlug:~# mount /dev/sdb1 /media/JoeyUSB3
mount: /dev/sdb1: can't read superblock
root@DebianPlug:~# mount /dev/sdb5 /media/JoeyUSB3
root@DebianPlug:~#

Attached is the result looking into Pogo using RDP. I can't copy to and fro yet, but will mess with permissions.
I'm taking nightly heart meds/melatonin and will go into coma in 90 minutes :-)

mount

root@DebianPlug:~# mount

tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,size=12092k,mode=755)

rpc_pipefs on /run/rpc_pipefs type rpc_pipefs (rw,relatime)
/dev/sdb5 on /media/JoeyUSB3 type ext4 (ro,relatime,data=ordered)

I never could get read nor write permissions for that folder/directory. I'll be up another hour and check in.
Really sorry I'm not all there with this, but am encouraged compared to the 1st day here :-)

This is bad! should not see the error .

It is good that it was mounted.

That means there is something wrong with the partition. And it must have been related to the previous error about "super block".

I'm going to try to get another USB 3 stick in the next three days (before my $5-off prize at BestBuy expires), maybe mine is having issues. Advice well taken if it's in stock, but I'm trusting UltraFits less and less and think they get too hot. I wondered before if Pogos used metal in the connectors as part of their heat sink scheme but this time it's at the end of a breakout box (allow 30 days shipping to Midwest US), which I dare say is much higher quality than the picture lets on.

I am not sure why Mint created 2 partitions when you format it! unless you told it to do that.

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdb1 1985 60049407 60047423 28.6G f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sdb5 2048 60049407 60047360 28.6G 83 Linux

Now it does not hurt to go back to Mint and find out how to erase all partitions and create one new partition, format it to Ext3 or Ext4 at the same time (Ext3 or Ext4 does not matter).

That might be good to do. Remember the Ultra Fit 32GB is troublesome for booting. But it should work after Linux is running... so I think your formatting was incorrect. I'm going to play with the Mint GUI to format my spare USB 3.0 stick to see if I can spot your mistake (if any).
