Joey, Staples has this LEXAR JUMPDRIVE S75 128GB BLK $19.99 with a local store pick up. I don't know this one is better than the above and they are the same Lexar brand.

So I hope in the future you will not recommend people to install OpenWrt for a general purpose Linux system on these plugs. And feel free to recommend Arch if you like Arch more than Debian. But may I suggest that you tell them why Arch is better.

I don't use ARMbian nor ARCH. As such, it is unwise for me to recommend any of them to anyone.

What do you think? the card 4 pins don't look like the molex we know for fan power. I think I recognize this header. It (header on the card) is used for power in a different interface (can't remember which).

The header to me is very similar to the AT floppy drives of the day when PC's still came with floppy drives. The power is necessary as the port output that can be taken from a USB 3 drive is way greater than the ~500 - 750 ma as found on USB2

Ahh, like Gravelrash is saying it's probably called an FDD power connector (floppy disk drive), as referenced here:

Internal FDD Power Connector for Supplying +5V Power to the USB Ports

Another thing for DIY'ers, if you or someone nearby uses eCigarettes, it's likely they have a pile of USB plugs with an eCig adapter on the other side (I have around 20 here, accumulated from starter kits). Since there's only two wires coming off the USB plug, it's a great way to obtain 5v off a USB port. And just solder whatever you'd like on the other end. In this case an FDD connector for the adapter.

There's always other models with a different connector.

More update: On the FDD power supply, it looks like the 4 pins are likely: 12v, ground, ground and 5v.

Maybe one of these is the ticket, and solder the color codes of 5v and ground to a USB male that has two wires.

Re: Best Pogoplug to buy

theoretically the speeds that are acheivable are in excess of 30mb+

however the limitation of ram and CPU throttles the system back from the theoretical maximums. and we would be talking about sustained read/write speeds, which again are limited by the abilities of the receiving end device.

to steam HD videos you are only looking in the ranges of you're looking at approx 1.4Mbps on the low end, and 3.4Mbps on the high end. With 4k video you are looking in the region of 14Mb+

All of which the plugs are capable of doing without breaking a sweat! :)

Okay :-) I have all the physical parts now. I acknowledge I have the coding skills of an ashtray, so if you ever need confirmation on identical hardware, drop me a line anytime :-D

I'm prepping right now in copying the USB stick.
Two (admittedly irritating) things and I'm off to the races.

1. I downloaded from DropBox. Which directory should I place linux-4.4.48-oxnas-tld-1.bodhi.tar.bz2 so that the extracting code etc find the target?
2. And should I wait until it's all installed before plugging in the USB 3 card?

I'm going to go slow and measure twice so to speak.

Put it in /boot. See step 2, the tar command below expects that the tarball is in the current directory, and "cd /boot" put you in /boot directory.

Quote

2. Extract the kernel in the archive:
cd /boot
tar -xjf linux-4.4.38-oxnas-tld-5.bodhi.tar.bz2

It really does not matter that the card is installed before or after. Which ever is more convenient for you.

Assuming you install kernel first, you should reboot it and verify the new kernel is running after it is up:

uname -a

And then power down, install the card. And power up.

As usual, serial console log is needed to see everything going on during boot.

No I think I hosed it bodhi. All was going perfect until Step 5, which starts out "mkimage -A arm" etc
It was saying couldn't find directory and stuff. So that's where I panicked a bit, started pasting in two lines at a time, and all four, and probably whacked it right there.

restoring a copy now. Bodhi should Step 5 go one line at a time or two, or what?

In fact how's this for diagnostic? These are my notes updated older commands specified above, maybe I made an error there.

My incomplete notes, with updated stuffs
step 1
tar -xjf linux-4.4.48-oxnas-tld-1.bodhi.tar.bz2
step 2
tar -xf linux-dtb-4.4.48-oxnas-tld-1.tar
3
4
cd /boot
apt-get remove flash-kernel
dpkg -i linux-image-4.4.48-oxnas-tld-1_1_armel.deb

5
6
fw_setenv dtb_file '/boot/dts/ox820-pogoplug-pro.dtb'

7

Ahh, I'm starting to see, the name of the image at least twice in #5 need to be updated but I'm not sure what they ought to say.
By the way, two wooden clothes pins hold the unit in place perfect.
-update I'm horrified to see i might have the uboot from 2013. I swore we updated that. Oh the mess I make. I'll research.

Joey,

Step 5 (exactly from the installation thread)
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,16044

cd /boot
mv uImage uImage.bak
mv uInitrd uInitrd.bak
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x60008000 -e 0x60008000 -n Linux-4.4.38-oxnas-tld-5 -d vmlinuz-4.4.38-oxnas-tld-5 uImage
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -a 0x60000000 -e 0x60000000 -n initramfs-4.4.38-oxnas-tld-5 -d initrd.img-4.4.38-oxnas-tld-5 uInitrd

And dont use the quote above! it is only a quote, which could be misleading. You should open that thread and copy/paste each line.

root@DebianPlug:~# uname -a
Linux DebianPlug 4.4.48-oxnas-tld-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Feb 15 02:59:11 PST 2017 armv6l GNU/Linux

Pretty sure success Part 1? Whew! And I've got corn chips/salsa to celebrate.

Yeah number 5 was what got me; Notepad in Windows (here on the Win7 ThinClient) word-wrapped it bad and I actually had to enter it here as though posting to get it in one piece to paste.

I haven't tried the USB 3.0 unit yet and might be wise to take a break and find my notes on Samba. What would you expect to happen if I just plug it in? If you want me to try any code, with a USB stick in the unit, let me know and I can try it.

Bodhi, sorry about the mess, but I discovered those Molex adapters are reversed! I was wrong. So my earlier findings had the unit not powered on. Here is is with it on now. By the way, no damage having it plugged in properly backwards, but no power that's all

Joey,

The DTB was the wrong one.
fw_setenv dtb_file '/boot/dts/ox820-pogoplug-pro.dtb'

Run the above at Debian command line. And reboot. And the get dmesg again.

Should be same result Bodhi as I ran that a few times already. Also because of fearlessness and zero evidence I substituted ox820-kd20.dtb and it took a long time to bootup and I might be lucky it did. So here goes with:

fw_setenv dtb_file '/boot/dts/ox820-pogoplug-pro.dtb'

It's not "sticking"... I think.

Whoah bodhi, hitting fw_printenv gets this, strange ain't it?

root@DebianPlug:~# fw_printenv

What piqued my attention is the mention of the correct dtb when using fw_printenv vs dmesg. Okay, now I see there's mention of both Classic and Pro dtb's. But why?

Slap on the wrist for running older u-boot :) that version uses variable fdt_file, not dtb_file.

So the correct command for your installed u-boot:
fw_setenv fdt_file '/boot/dts/ox820-pogoplug-pro.dtb'
Please try again.

My combo USB-molex-molex-FD cables have arrived! So you just took the 2 connectors out and put them back in reversved?

I see the difference, wow! Getting late here but I'll check your reaction. Thanks a lot for the progress and getting pizza on my wrist:-) 678.29 BogoMIPS would indicate it's not clocked above lukewarm though, but that's a different bridge me wonders.

Now task for tomorrow:

Plug in a USB 3.0 flash drive while system is running.

fdisk -l
dmesg
lsusb

Depending what we'll see or not see, you might want to reboot while the USB 3.0 flash drive is plugged in. And then run those 3 commands again.

And make sure the drive has either nothing in it, or if it has content then it should not be an old rootfs or something like that..

By the way the BogoMIPS number is bogus. It is not valid on an SMP with dual core CPU like this Pogo Pro.

That's clever :) I don't have any, will have to get some from the 99cent store tomorrow.

Bodhi, when you say have nothing on the USB stick, do you mean format it "unformatted"? As is you can see it's a 32GB stick formatted Fat32.
