Some Rosewill HDD Enclosures (FAR)
December 08, 2016 08:11AM
Currently, NewEgg has some Rosewill HDD enclosures and among other things Free After Rebate (see below).

I just placed an order for item #5 (Rosewill 5.25" SATA Trayless Hot Swap Mobile Rack for 3.5" SATA) for my Linux desktop computer and item #6 (Rosewill Aluminum SATA II External Enclosure RX310) for my Pogoplug Pro 02 external SATA HDD. Even though the RX310 enclosure supports 2x 2.5" SATA HDDs and makes it look like a single HDD, I don't know if a Pogoplug Pro 02 will be able to see them as a single HDD. Also, I am hoping this enclosure will fit into the item #5 (Rosewill 5.25" SATA Trayless Hot Swap Mobile Rack for 3.5" SATA), too.

Perhaps, Joey will like item #9 (Rosewill 120mm Cooling Case Fan w/ IP56 Dust Resistant). Regardless, if you see anything you like, be sure to place the order before they are gone.

  1. Rosewill 2.5"Armer Hard Drive Enclosure (RX100-PU3-25B) Free after $9 Rebate
  2. Rosewill 2.5" SSD/HDD Mounting Kit Bracket for 3.5" Drive Bay (RXC200M) Free after $8 Rebate
  3. Rosewill 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure w/ USB 3.0 (RX307-PU3-35B) Free after $17 Rebate
  4. Rosewill 2-Port USB 3.0 Front Panel Hub (RCH-200) Free after $9 Rebate
  5. Rosewill 5.25" SATA Trayless Hot Swap Mobile Rack for 3.5" SATA (RX-C525) Free after $14 Rebate
  6. Rosewill Aluminum SATA II External Enclosure (RX310) Free after $20 Rebate
  7. 10' Rosewill Mini DisplayPort to VGA Cable (RCDC-14023) Free after $13 Rebate
  8. 7' Rosewill Cat 5E 24AWG Ethernet Patch Cord in Gray (RCAT5E-7GY) Free after $6 Rebate
  9. Rosewill 120mm Cooling Case Fan w/ IP56 Dust Resistant (RAWP-141209v2) Free after $11 Rebate
  10. Rosewill PCIe FireWire Add-On Card (RC-504) Free after $18 Rebate
  11. 12-Piece Rosewill Precision Screwdriver Set (RTK-016) Free after $11 Rebate

Makes me wonder the corporate decisions why they do that, if it's to raise cash for a big new Chinese load of wholesale before possible price-up next month due to -edited- global trade uncertainty.

I've found Rosewill to be pretty good prosumer goods - even when I got that power strip with individual switches, the one I thought was low quality control, I went to resolder internally and it turned out to be tacked so well I couldn't improve it much.

I'd have bought half the stuff on the list twice over if they let me; even that USB 3.0 front panel would look nice attached to the side of a Pogoplug with mpcie inside :-), but jing is scarce this time of year. I'm glad most of it is out of stock lol

I doubt that. It is a usual year-end sale with rebates.

I did not bother to buy the USB3 front panel. Back in 10/25/16, I already bought this Rosewill RCR-IM5001 - 75-in-1 Internal Card Reader Hub - 3 x USB 2.0 Ports / eSATA Port / Extra Silver Face Plate / Molex Power Cable - Fits 3.5” Drive Slot US $12 with a $12 NewEgg rebate still in processed.

A couple years ago I bought a Rosewill router with AC 750, and almost a month later NewEgg had a promotion where they'd throw in an additional Rosewill router. Lower end but still a free addition. So I contacted them and they gave me that promotional router free after the fact by a month. These days all I miss are the motherboard deals, like the one you mentioned Habibie.
eBay lacks deals like that. But other than that the rest of my experience with NewEgg was like we saw today, by the time I see a free-after-rebate offer they're out of stock. I failed to contact them too like I said I would. Nudge that higher on the ToDo list.

Probably a good time to ask if your mpcie USB 3.0 arrived? The suspense is palpable, and figure this time of year the Postal service is geared-up and focused.

It has :) but I am busy building new kernel for the Pogo Pro V3, so I'll wait until the 20-pin-USB-3.0 adapters arrive too, and will install in the box . The card appearance looks good.

I'll try and prioritize next pennies towards the same one you ordered. With SATA port and two USB 3.0 connections, that v3 might be an ultimate all-around home NAS considering power draw and lots of factors. One factor is my Hackintosh, which won't recognize my USB 3.0 cards anyway and if they did they might wreck everything when waking up! So having it over LAN is jolly and ho ho ho and stuff.
If you get a minute maybe I can persuade you to paste the link to the one you got.

It's here:

I don't know if this card will work yet.

This is probably an original Newegg purchase:

And I don't know if I can get $24 to load my PayPal lol

I figure, even if it doesn't work, or is exactly USB 2.0 speed in Pogo v3, it's still usable on my Windows-centric headless laptop.

But again, if this wows us, does top end Gigabit LAN transfers, whoah man that would be insane.

It is insane! imagine a Pogo Pro as a NAS running the latest Linux kernel with eSATA, USB 3.0, Wifi, Gbits, for less than $US 40. And if you buy the parts slowly, it could be $30.

Wow, that really is insane to have all of the above, especially if the price can be cut down to about $15! For instance, with a PogoPlug Pro $5 (after rebate) + ULT-BEST SATA to eSATA Cable 6Gbps Shielded Extender Extension HDD Cable with Bracket Red 20CM $1.06 (for eSATA hack) + mPCIe to 19pin Header USB3.0 Card Mini PCIe to Dual USB3.0 Expansion Card Hot $7.72 + Motherboard 19/20 Pin Header Connector to 2 USB3.0 Type A Female Adapter Hub New $1.76 = $15.54. This still needs a USBx WiFi module, i.e. best 150Mbps 150M Mini USB WiFi Wireless Adapter Network LAN Card 802.11n/g/b OY $1.45 or Mini Portable USB 3G/4G WiFi Wlan Hotspot 150Mbps Wireless Router Dongle AUS $8.69, to bring up the price to $16.99 or $24.23, respectively.

Absolutely insane, 25 bucks :) and you can only find out how to do that here in this forum :))

The USB Wifi/3G is a good approach, the mPCIe is better utilized as USB 3.0 or extra SATA interface.

We'll have to nickname it the Octopus because of all the tentacles this can support lol
Worth mentioning are that SSDs are low priced this week at Best Buy. Not that it's top of the list, but I'm sure we'd have a great time with a 250GB SSD off the SATA jack.

The USB 3.0 will be a watershed moment, because that will answers many questions - here's one: with the 128 MB RAM limit, can a fast USB 3.0 stick be used as swap? There's two plugs on the adapters! One to a hub and the other for 8-16GB of pure swap (considering swap requirements, my budget and easy annual replacement cost).

Great ideas you guys have, but I'd add one, if there's such thing as USB FM radio transmitter, that could plug into a Pogoplug USB 2.0 slot and play a Logitech Media server playlist out to FM transmitter. This is close, but you'd still need a DA converter and some DAs are noisy. I'd love to do that right now broadcast my Holiday tunes to me and four neighbors all month. Hmmmm. I'll do a little research, maybe a USB soundcard that works in Debian and has high immunity to digital circuit noise. I'm off!

That was quick!

Joey,

I am not sure if I understood you correct. You want to be able to let your Pogoplug serve as an FM radio station through its USB port? How much transmission power R we talking about and how about FCC licensing?

Real low power, maybe 1/2 an acre tops, in a category the FCC wouldn't care and neighbors who didn't know better woudl probably think it was Public Radio or something. In a store like Family Dollar the FM transmitters go for about $12 normal and $6 on sale. There's all kinds of even lower powered FM transmitters for the car, where your Android phone or tablet plugs into a little transmitter designed to go as far as the car radio antenna.

Compare pros and cons of broadcasting Bluetooth: you figure the price of Bluetooth speakers are terribly high, while everyone's got a radio. The way playlists work it would be easy to manage. So the FM transmitter part is the easiest, but finding a USB soundcard that's clean is probably going to take some research. I wouldn't really expect a $1.50 D/A converter to sound very good. But who knows. Also even the Family Dollar FM Transmitters scan until it's broadcasting on an unused part of the spectrum so no one is bothered.

I'm brainstorming at the moment but my next ToDo list starts with a couple mpcie cards, fingers crossed!

IC your point. In this case, you probably meant this USB FM Transmitter?

If you are live in an EU country, perhap this Android 5.1.1 Car DVD DAB+ Tuner/Box USB Digital Audio Broadcasting Receiver (DAB) will be a more versatile project to have. Just need to find its (equivalent) source code and port it to Linux.

I am not sure what did you mean by a clean USB sound card. But, I do have this External USB Sound Card 7.1 Channel 3D Audio Adapter and it delivers a clear and crisp sound to my computer speakers. Coupled with either this Car Kit Wireless FM Transmitter MP3 Player or this Protable FM Transmitters, you will have a limited FM radio transmitter.

Just that it's not prone to internal electrical interference, resulting in artifacts (buzz, crackles, whine like AM radio etc) all over the music or whatever you're broadcasting.

Wow this one you mentioned catches my eye. Linux would only need to recognize the soundcard part of it and it should run fine. Nice!

* This is the week to check at Goodwill and other thrift stores for the kind of gems like these college students and professors donate. Plus other people in need benefit so that's a win-win :-)

Ironically, I could not find it on either eBay or AliExpress (may be I did not look hard enough).
