bodhi,

I guess they were fixed, I upgraded the kernel to 4.19.58 to be in line with Debian 10. After booting the kernel and ramdisk, I got dumped into the Debian installer, but I'm failing steps in the install process.

I have been trying to update my kernel for this Zero Client. I have gotten LTS kernels 4.19 and 5.15 to work, but networking won't work with kernel 6.1. Anyone know how I can go about troubleshooting why? Thanks.

Probably nothing serious. Boot with serial console, log in and

ifconfig -a
ethtool eth0

And post the entire serial console boot log here.

I can't get the 6.1 kernel to boot with my installed version of Debian 10. I have a ramdisk image of Debian 12 that I'm trying to upgrade to. When I get dropped into the Debian installer, it can't detect a network interface. Here is the serial boot console:

I've noticed that these lines from my earlier post with kernel 4.19.58:

The ramdisk image doesn't have ethtool since it only has BusyBox v1.35.0 functionality and I think ifconfig is now deprecated in favor of ip, but the output of ip a is:

Came across this while trying to figure out if it's worth acquiring some of these: there's a guy down in Sierra Vista, Arizona near the Sonora, Mexico border selling 9 of these @ $5 a pop for the AIO version! Have to drive to get it I assume. My guess is he gave up on them, why he's dumping them so cheap.

After reading here & the previous log (Surprised its a TMS-320! Was thinking of my Nokia N900 with a similar SoC) it looks like these problems were never solved, likely due to TI never open sourcing the various OMAP drivers.

One more thing & the main reason I'm here: writing this near Easter '24, I'm reminded that a bunch of code for older archs were dropped from the kernel in the newest versions (6.x), and I'm thinking there's likely no reason why some related embedded device drivers wouldn't be dropped as well. In particular, Linus & friends seem to be seriously considering removing 32 bit & making modern kernels 64 bit only, which would explain why a 6.1 kernel won't work but a 5.x will. Don't know if true, but seems likely.

Did anyone ever make any progress on this? I have someone local wanting to get rid of several of these T410 all in ones also.

There has been a DTS file available in mainstream linux since sometime before 4.19.x. So apparently someone has successfully used it. Current longterm kernel has https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/arch/arm/boot/dts/ti/omap/dm8148-t410.dts?h=v6.6.57. My device is buried in a closet and I never got around to trying it. I did find a page at booting hp t410 with current kernel that has some instructions, but it is not dated, so no idea how current this is with latest kernels.
