GoFlex Net died - Recommend new HW please!

Hi,

Today morning my loved GoFlex Net died, without any notice. No power to sata.
(2TB hdd survived fortunately.)

Can you suggest successor?
  • Device must be supported by Bodhi! :) - This is the most important! (I mean Bodhi Debian Rootfs.)
  • Shuld be under 100USD with postage - im living in EU. (HU)
  • Shuld be a little faster than GoFlexnet was. (over the 30MB/s CIFS read speed and 5Mbit/s torrent downloading.)
  • at least 512 MB RAM, and over 1.2 GHz CPU
  • 1 SATA (better to have 2.)
  • Should be energy saving. less than 20W consumming.

Guys, can you recommend me ?

If you wanna save $$$, a $10 Pogoplug Pro may not be a bad choice at all.

NSA325 (2 SATA 512MB RAM). This box price had recently been reduced to under 100 USD.
NSA310S (1 SATA 256MB RAM). Not bad if NSA325 is too expensive. But a little slower than the NSA325.
Dreamplug (1 eSATA 512MB RAM). Least expensive, but not sure if you can get it in EU.

Dear Bodhi,

Thanks for very fast and detailed answer!

I quickly search the suggested HW but unfortunately there are no available device to buy - as of now. (for resonable prise)

I searched this forum and found Espressobin in some thread and you also found promising this board. what is your opininion now?
I can buy it from Amazon link for 49 USD + shipping 25USD

It seems valid option, but speed is the question for me.

othierwise as I wrote RAM shouldnt be enough.

Maybe you can check your Goflex Net again with a new power adaptor. Get a spare 12V, 2A power adaptor and give it a try.

Yessssss! Power adapter was wrong only!

Thank you so much!

I started to measure the voltage for the adaptor, and it was 12,2 V - and thought it is fine.
Probably it can't provide when attached to the NAS.

So replacement is not urgent anymore. But I open my eyes for the future....

Great! Similar things happened to me before. Just bad power adaptor.. Although voltage is normal, it can't provide the current needed.
I cut the power adaptor open and replaced one capacitor, everything was working again.

Im so lazy, and no brave enough to open a switching power supply....
So I changed to an "original chines" power supply. It is 5A written on it. probably can provide 1-2 A. :)

But anyway. you helped me to turn back to my loved GoFlex Net. :))

Hi Asterix.

Nice litle board and thanks for recomend to me. It is possible good candidate for me for some project in the future.

But there is no Sata, and only usb 2.0 is available, which is definitialy not target for NAS.

I don't know what your budget is. However, perhaps this Khadas VIM (S905X 4-core, 2 / 8 GB RAM / storage) CAN $57.57 (could be a scam) or Khadas VIM2 (S912 8-core) US $83.98 (2 / 8 GB RAM / eMMC storage) + StarTech IDE2SAT25 IDE 40 Pin Female to SATA Adapter US $10.05.

Hi Asterix and Habibie

Thanks for recommend these hw.
But after a few hours of digging of net I found either of them are not real solution for NAS!

A few posts say lack of real support, annoying forum moderation (deleting post) and lots of frustration is along with this routes.
I found only very bad CIFS performance for both hw. Which is one of my most important aspect when find NAS....

But anyway I appreciate your help. :)

Banana Pi - with the A20 processor. works a treat for me on many situatuations... you should also serioulsy consider the images provided by www.armbian.com

For NAS use SATA is not always necessary today. A USB 3 port with support for UASP can in many instances outperform SATA on most ARM based boards. See the Odroid HC1 for a $50 ARM based system designed for use as a NAS using USB 3 with a JMicron JMS578 USB to SATA bridge.

It seems very promissing almost perfect solution !

I found this information about the CIFS performance:

We copied a big 8GB file from the HC1 to the PC via a Samba connection.
The transfer speed is very close to the high-end commercial NAS product in the market.

If you decide to purchase one you may wish to check out Armbian for use as the OS. They provide both a Debian and Ubuntu based image optimized for the hardware. If you choose the Debian image you can use the included armbian-config application to install OpenMediaVault as well. See Armbian forum for details.
