USB 4 Port Print Server Access Points Network Fax

I saw this USB 4 Port Print Server Access Points Network Fax and started to think perhaps we can do this using a rather inexpensive Seagate Dockstar and/or a Pogoplug Mobile. Anyone?

If you have a USB printer. And either a Dockstar or the Pogo Mobile already running in your network, then the cost to do this is 0$. Just need to plug in the USB printer to that box, install CUPS and set it up. I'm not sure about faxing, I've never tried that.

Yes. you can do it with Rpi zero W too, less power used than dockstar / pogoplugs.

For 24 hour on device, 1w is about $1 for one year if price of electricity is about 12c/kwh.

Have you tried to run the Dockstar or Pogo Mobile with cpufreq_ondemand? It is available in my kernel release. Would be interesting to see how much energy is used when the Pogo Mobile is slow down to 200Mhz at idle (Dockstar can be down to 400 Mhz). I don't have any meter at the moment to check this.

habibie,

You are making me work harder :)) I was thinking of Kill-a-watt gadget.

Watt = Amp * Volt

Sorry about that Bodhi. When I posted above, I had a thought of measuring the DC current consumed by the device through the DC port. Some of the USB meter adapters shown on the above link can measure up to 30 VDC, IIRC.

For a kill-a-watt gadget, I use this Digital Power Meter.

Thanks habibie!

For less than 10 USD, a bargain!

habibie,

Have you done any measurement on an idle rPi zero using your gadget? I'm curious to know at what CPU frequency it is running at idle, and how much energy consumption it takes.

Bodhi,

No. ATM, I have no plan to use them, i.e. I don't know what I will do with them, yet. The only project I could think of is to turn them into a digital PBX systems. Anyway, they are still wrapped in their respective plastic bags and being stowed away.

The real question is...... can we hack it. What operating system is on it. Are there console /jtag ports ????????
