Microsoft is buying GitHub in a $7.5 billion deal

Microsoft is buying GitHub in a $7.5 billion deal
June 09, 2018 01:25AM
I know GitHub is a familiar haunt for some of you, and had to bring it up here. I learned of it in the Washington Post, and could provide a link, but the page whites-out quickly after loading and they ask if you want to subscribe. If course I want to.

Back to the matter at hand, Microsoft isn't doing this because they're nice, and time will tell what they're up to. My guess is that they will claim it all as intellectual property.

As for what is at GitHub, you know better than I, because my connection breaks all the time and I don't willingly go there much.

Any thoughts?

I just don't hope so. However, when that happens, I believe lots of existing developers will start to pull out of GitHUB.

I think it is OK.

GitHub is in dire financial trouble. So they have to either close up shop or sell to a large public company to get back their investment and make some money in the process. There is no other choice for GitHub to survive. Going public will not help them survive.

From what I've read, Microsoft has moved all (more or less) their SW developement version control to Git. So they need GitHub too.

And IMO, the real reason they bought GitHub is to sell more Azure. I don't think Opensource developers will leave GitHub until we know exactly how MS will run GitHub.

Joey,

Of course they are a for-profit business. Everything they do is to make money.

Remember GitHub software is proprietary, i.e. closed source. So MS will own that property. Anything we put inGitHub have an opensource license such as GPL V2. MS cannot claim any of the source code (if what you meant by "claim it all as intellectual property").

I'd encourage anyone interested to conjure a few clever search terms dealing with Microsoft and intellectual theft and see what you come up with. They are a hardball legal team and ruin competitors for sport. Their business model is beyond the scope of my wildest dreams but their product development model is that you the consumer get something that's 80% finished and never more.
There's a quote I can't find at the moment but years ago it was famously said Microsoft is like a praying mantis - it makes love to its partners while devouring them. And what I've seen close up and constant since 1997 is just that.
I won't argue because this is very hot button issue, and one would hope it's better MS acquires GitHub than some foreign entities, but remember it's not in Microsoft's long-term interest to have anything working perfectly!

"Embrace, extend, and extinguish". That's what M$ did and probably still doing :)

When you look at Google, it is the same thing. They bought out promising startups and shelved the products. Voila, less competitors in the market that they are in.

It is totally sucks. It is really hard for innovators to see their products come to fruition.

What you all said above is practically a capitalism scheme. That said, the existence of Linux is probably due to socialism. ATM, capitalism looks like a dominant thing in this world, not exactly like the world depicted in StarTek world.

I disagreed with this viewpoint completely. But to avoid getting out of topic (Opensource software), I will not explain and I will stop my participation on this thread here :)

Me too I disagree with the transcript but "get" what Habibie meant. We're cool - even so I was saying "we can agree to disagree" long before a more famous guy said it :-)

I think we agree about it's too bad it was MS who bought GitHub (with their history). But I think GitHub had to sell, and as a private company they need to make the choice. IMO, there is a relatively good chance that MS will keep it operating like it has been.

So I think hell has frozen over :)

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/10/microsoft-promises-to-defend-not-attack-linux-with-its-60000-patents

IMO, it is more and more the real reason they bought GitHub is to sell more Azure.

I think they know joining Linux is good for their business bottom line and survival. Simply put, there are exponentially more computers running Linux than running Windows. And it will be that way forward. They don't want to follow IBM footstep.

Wildarse guess: perhaps there is an IRAD project for MS Linux OS distribution on Intel hardware at Richmond right now? :))))

Stranger things have happened...... anyone remember Lindows?

Yes on both counts, and the Lindows episode left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. That wasn't too long after Microsoft waged holy legal hell against a kid named Mike Rowe, who had a little website called Mike Roe Soft...
But there was that consortium against Linux that MS heavily sponsored and I can't remember the name. They claimed there were millions of lines of code Linux stole from Microsoft, and eventually the judge demanded they show any stolen lines of code and they didn't find anything. Huge money blow. Bill Gates's dad was a lawyer.

My feelers are, this latest "fool me twice" maneuver is the precursor to a total house cleaning before Artificial intelligence and may be a result even.

* you know what's strange, is the area in Israel that's called Meddigo is a HUGE IT hub and I for one don't rule out it could be what Armageddon is about. I don't know but I'd imagine World War 3 will be IT driven. AI vs AI? D@mn!
Sorry my tangents lol

Oh wow and that is some sorts of news that MS ditched its own kernel for Linux kernel (older version) on its Windows 10? Apparently, its open-source Linux kernel is NOT driver compatible with the original Linux kernel. Regardless, there must be some reasons that caused MS to take this path, i.e. the development of its own kernel OS is no longer visible to be competitive, etc.

i chuckled when M$ decided to drop the EDGE browser and rebuild it around the opensoure Chromium.

https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/8/18300077/microsoft-edge-chromium-canary-development-release-download

sometimes it pays to build your own software, other times it pays to drop your own and embrace something else
