Bootable USB Creator on Linux

I am new to Linux and be afraid of commands. Is there any built-in app in Debain to make a bootable USB?

Can you be more specific about what you want to accomplish?

Most distros use "hybrid" images for there installation media these days which can be directly written to a usb drive via dd.I use grub-mkrescue to generate usb-bootable disk images for a custom Debian Installer I maintain.

There are many other ways to create bootable media but it depends greatly on what you are trying to do.

Addition questions and suggestions.

Which box do you want to install Linux on? is that one of the ARM NAS we are supporting here? or a x86 laptop?

In both cases, there are ready-made Debian-based DVD installer image that you can use to install. Each of those images can be written to a USB thumb drive using Windows/Linux/Mac tool to make an installation disk (works just like DVD).

I'm not only the slowest Linux user here but am learning it with a declining mind.

I'd say cheat, and use Windows for now to run Universal-USB-Installer. It's an EXE with no installer, just right-click Run As Administrator and you can make bootable USBs of pretty much any kind of Linux and most Windows etc.

Someday when I'm a Linux purist I'll use WINE in Linux to use this :-D

Remember, we all used Windows in the old days. And most of us will probably use Windows forever at works :)

Hey thanks a lot bodhi! Yeah I've had a blast using this and it's the main reason I was retrofitting my win machines with USB 3.0 abilities as well as trying to switch over to USB 3 sticks, is that it's so fast to load these up with whatever new distributions to try, uner a minute flat. Use Pogo to grab lots of Linux (rainy day testing weekend situiation).

With that encouragement maybe I'm ready for YUMI, said to be a step ahead of this but apparently you can have a USB stick with all the Mints including Debian Mints etc.
But if there's anything I've learned here it's how powerful Debian is - just amazing.

Debian Mint is "basically the same" as Ubuntu Mint (Mint is derived from Ubuntu which is derived from Debian, and more utilties added). So to keep it simple, you should just use Linux Mint, and use Cinamon as default too.

It is much easier for Windows users to use Linux Mint with no changes of options out of the box. Cinamon desktop GUI is closest to Windows Explorer that I am aware of. And you don't loose any Debian stuff by using Mint.

I was scared the first time I did this,i even failed 4 times,anyway,i have done it now.I suggest you check out some video guides beforehand,you need to know what you need for making Linux bootable USB.
