FYI - I picked up a $6 EasyCap AV->USB adapter to see how that compared with the HD PVR. The one I received has a Somagic SMI2021 chipset which only has an experimental kernel driver that requires building a custom kernel. Thats too much effort but it also has a userspace app called 'somagic-capture' that can access the video directly so I gave that a spin on my dockstar. After usby petergunn - Debian

Haven't had a chance to recover my dockstars from storage so that will have to wait for a weekend or two. A few discoveries tho... 1) hdpvr capture is pretty good down to ~4mbps - after that its gets blockly pretty fast 2) Baytrail NUC is powerful enough to transcode a1080i 4mbps live stream down to lower size/bitrates using x264 codec without hardware acceleration. This is very usby petergunn - Debian
Gravelrash Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Which program do you use to do the sharing of the > stream. Using homegrown app inspired by HD-PiVR which didn't work well on my Baytrail NUC. My app runs about 3-5% CPU on the NUC while streaming so I'm guessing it will still be <10% on the Dockstar. Has anyone tried attaching a Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR to their Dockstar? I acquired a used Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR from ebay and have it hooked up (via adapters) to stream my TiVo output to VLC using the Intel NUC (Ubuntu 14.04) that replaced my Dockstars. Its working great but I'm wondering if it might be worth resurrecting one of my old Dockstars to handle the streaming. Just need to knowby petergunn - Debian
Well my 3 remaining Dockstars will be switched off this weekend replaced by 2x HP N54L Microservers and an n2820 NUC, with just one Dockstar remaining at the in-laws house handling remote rsync backups. Interesting. I replaced my dockstar that was running Asterisk with a Baytrail NUC running Ubuntu+XBMC so I'm not running Asterisk anymore. Recycled my old Sprint cell phones as free Freedom Pop phones for the kids since it gets them free 3g+wimax as well as voip calls. Might consider reinstalling Asterisk again if it keeps working reliably. -PGby petergunn - Debian

I've found my phone makes a pretty good OpenVPN Virtual Access Point but unfortunately it only tunnels over 3g/4g and wont work as a Wireless Universal Repeater which would be ideal for places like Hotel rooms or coffee shops where free wifi is available. So I picked up a TP-Link WR703n (SLBoat modified) usb-powered router that runs OpenWRT and configured that to work as a Universal Repeaterby petergunn - Debian
Another quick update to use Android Phone as VAP... VAP: "Virtual-Access-Point" acts as a wifi hotspot and tunnels all traffic over OpenVPN through phones mobile data connection. This allows you simply attach your computer, tablet, or other device without installing OpenVPN client software. Quick update to get this working on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise... I needed to apt-get install openvpn network-manager-openvpn-gnome Ubuntu doesn't seem to accept the pushed DNS settings from the server like it used to. I just rebuilt my main PC server with a new full tower case that has plenty of empty 5.25" drive bays. Im thinking my dockstars might fit nicely inside right behind one of the intake fans. Would it be possible to power 3 dockstars off the 12v output from the PSU if I cut the power cords and wire them to a molex connector? - PGby petergunn - Debian
BTW I recovered my disk successfully. Everything is back up and working again (asterisk 1.8.3 and the outgoing calls patch - I didnt re-install tho). -PGby petergunn - Debian
Unfortunately my disk on the dockstar hosting my asterisk server has failed yesterday. :-( I still have the asterisk tarball on my server though - it is asterisk-1.8-current.tar.gz from Feb 2011 and unpacks as asterisk.1.8.3 Not sure if I will re-install or go with a $40 Obi100 since that seems less hassle and would let me retire the LinksysPAP2. -PGby petergunn - Debian
