Thanks for the fast reply Bodhi. I will try this. I will test this on a new usb drive using Jeff's old tutorial to load the old system and then use the one you suggested to test the upgrade process.by Phreon - Debian
My 2 Dockstars that I have had running with "Linux debian-2 2.6.32-5-kirkwood " since March of 2011 need to be updated to the newer kernel. I want to use a wireless dongle and my old system does not appear to support it. I have tried to search the posts to find a tutorial like Jeff's original one to upgrade my Dock's but the searching I have done leads me to posts that are tby Phreon - Debian
Hi Sushi, Thanks so much for the info. I will check out all of the sites you mentioned. The board I have is from the Brother multifunction printer. I googled the memory chips and it appears to have 256MB ram and 512MB of flash. There is a large cpu size chip that has "Japan Risotto j501 lt8404" on it and I can't find anything on that. Does anyone know of a good forum for help in hacking embedded devices? I really would like to use this mobo for a NAS. I can FTP and TELNET to it but cant get to the shell. I also have the admin password "access" but still can break through. I downloaded a firmware upgrade for the printer "BrMain450.exe" from Brother to see if I could reverse engineer it to find the OS. I had a Brother printer that died and I removed the motherboard. (MFC-490CW) It has a color LCD, LAN, 2 USB ports, wireless, compact flash port, SD port, a speaker, phone port with keypad, and more. I can Telnet into it and can see a limited command set from the proprietary printer program that is running. I can't seem to get to the underlying LINUX O/S. Thanks for the help richard, that works great. Petergunn; Do you know how to add applications to the fluxbox desktop menu? Thanks Pby Phreon - Debian
Hi richard, Thanks for the reply. I will try to figure that out. (I am kind of new to all of this so some of what you wrote assumes more knowledge then I have.) I will google some of it and see if I can get something going. Thanks Pby Phreon - Debian
Hi Richard, Thanks to petergunn's advice I am able to have a 15" lcd display working on my dockstar. I would like to have the default console available on start up without X running. Can you describe the steps you took to get the text console to work with the displaylink adapter. Thanks Pby Phreon - Debian
Thanks petergunn, I will try that too. Pby Phreon - Debian
Thanks petergunn, That works! ...(mostly) (I will also now try to figure out how to modify window manager settings.) I now get a desktop with "Workspace 1" and a clock. If I rightclick I get a menu with apps and stuff. Way cool! My SSH terminal is showing after I startx many X11 errors though. I have attached the file. Is this something I need to correct? Thanksby Phreon - Debian
Hi petergunn,, I will use the attachment files from now on. Thanks for directing me to the correct post. I will try that. Pby Phreon - Debian
Hi Folks, I need some guidance! I got a second Dockstar that I want to use with my TV to stream Netflix and ESPN and stream video from my other Dockstar server. (Thanks do much to Jeff and the people on this forum for all of the work that makes hacking the device so easy for nubes like myself.) If I am reading the log correctly it looks like the Dockstar flash is good and it does default to Pogoplug when no bootable usb flash is installed. When I ssh into the Dockstar this is what is in /. I just received a new Dockstar. I changed the /etc/init.d/rcS file to comment out "phone home". Tried to run #fdisk /dev/sda on a new 4 gig stick and it returned no such command. I could run other Busybox commands, but not fdisk. Wierd. So I Used #Busybox fdisk -l and that worked. But I decided to partition the new 4 gig stick on my Linux desktop plugged it backby Phreon - uBoot
Thanks again petergunn, that works. I can now transfer files to my samba share. I assumed (incorrectly) that when I created a new user, he would have write access to his own folder. Pby Phreon - Debian
OK, you have got to try this if you are not a Linux expert! Install webmin - it allows you to configure your entire system through a web browser. I mean everything! http://www.webmin.com/deb.htmlby Phreon - Debian

Thanks Restamp, Your knowledge of Linux is far beyond what I currently know. You have helped point me in directions that allowed me to get this far though. I now have 2 hard drives and a thumb drive that will boot. They all use parts of Jeff's install as I mentioned earlier. I have believe it is likely that if you have a Dockstar you are going to have a hard disk plugged into it. So why not have the bootable OS on the HD? If you are hacking a Dockstar then its very likely you have used Jeff's terrific install script that seems designed for USB memory sticks. That means you have already modified the onboard nand that now boots to an attached usb memory device orby Phreon - Debian
Lotus49 you make a good point. If you decide to load Debian on your dockstar, then its probably time to learn Debian Linux from the Debian experts. Thanks Pby Phreon - Debian

Thanks Rgtaa , the links were great help. Thanks also Rat, I have been "breaking" a lot of stuff with this Dockstar. I would like to thank Jeff and everyone for all of the work they have done, and the help they have provided for everyone working on their Dockstars. Sorry for this newbie question ... I just loaded Jeff's Debian-Squeeze install on a USB 1GB stick on my new Dockstar. I plugged in a usb hard drive and mounted it.
