This new box looks like it might make a nice media streamer. Some searching on the Web says that Ubuntu is already running on this (Marvell Armada 510 SOC), but I don't know how well-supported the video hardware is (and it would be necessary to get the 1080p playback, I assume).by ecc - Debian

Here's another possibility, which doesn't require rebuilding a kernel, just modifying it a bit. You can do what the "flash-kernel" script does for some images, and insert an initial pair of instructions that sets the correct machine ID in r1. This should force it to boot as a DockStar, no matter what arcNumber is set to. Warning: I haven't tested this. $ cp vmlinuzby ecc - Debian
squeezeplug Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > is there a kernel or an image available which boots with every arcNumber? I doubt it. But if you know what number it was changed to, you can redefine MACH_DOCKSTAR to that number and build a hacked kernel that should work.by ecc - Debian
The linux-arm-kernel developers are moving to an approach that uses device trees (as originally used in Open Firmware for powerpc) to describe board-specific variants of the same basic architecture. That should eliminate the need for a new machine ID for minor differences in hardware. But it also means that patches for new boards are likely to be delayed until the new approach is settled.by ecc - Debian
Congratulations on getting this to work on the GoFlex. Unfortunately I don't get any response on my DockStar (BootROM version 1.11). And a word of warning to other DockStar hackers. This might just have been coincidence, but after trying to send either the UART-debug sequence or the UART-boot sequence during boot, my DockStar wouldn't boot at all. Using JTAG I found that block 0 oby ecc - uBoot
Peter Carmichael wrote the necessary patches, but as far as I know they haven't yet been submitted to the linux-arm-kernel list for inclusion. I went through that process for the DockStar, and offered to help (since I just acquired a couple of cheap GoFlex Net boxes from Office Depot :-), but I haven't heard back from Peter yet.by ecc - Debian

You can use UUIDs instead of device names to avoid this problem. Find the UUID of your swap partition: # blkid -p -u other /dev/sda2 (substitute the device currently used for the swap partition) Change /etc/fstab to use the UUID instead of the device name: UUID=01234567-abcd-0123-abcd-0123456789ab none swap sw Profit!by ecc - Debian
My apologies if this is off-topic, but I think this might appeal to the same kind of person who likes hacking on a DockStar. Best Buy is selling the 8" Insignia Infocast for $80. I've been experimenting with using a stripped-down Linux kernel instead of u-boot. The idea (which is not original -- you can find several other similar projects via Google) is to use the power of the Linux networking, filesystem, and USB stacks to load whatever kernel you want, and then the kexec system call to warm-boot into it. Unfortunately, I've hit a brick wall: after loadingby ecc - Debian

Thanks for posting this. A couple of questions: Why do you bother with ubifs if you want a read-only system? Squashfs will be more space-efficient. Also, are you able to use your union-mounted /var to do a full apt-get update/upgrade cycle? The package lists can approach 100MB if you have several repos in your apt sources. U-Boot doesn't know how to use a USB-serial adapter, only a true serial port. I don't have a Pink Pogoplug, but if it's sufficiently like the DockStar then that means finding the on-board connector and attaching a modified USB-to-3.3V cable (like the Nokia CA-42 clones that you can find cheaply on eBay) -- not a regular one like you describe (because that will probably use 5V andby ecc - uBoot
