Using the new bootstrap.deb file (025) and the new kernel by gornone, the wifi usb adapter works perfectly without set the priority. I don't know if this is the new bootstrap installation or the new kernel did the trick. In any case, it works fine on Squeeze now!by twinclouds - Debian
WiFi works on Squeeze Now! I reinstalled squeeze using the new bootstrap file in jeff's scripts to URL_DEBOOTSTRAP=http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/d/debootstrap/debootstrap_1.0.25_all.deb and installed the latest kernel (2.6.35.7) by grogone. I am able to boot wifi usb adapter without ethernet cable connected. Nothing else need to be added. I don't know if it is due to thby twinclouds - Debian

Delhibelli, Glad to hear that WiFi adapters are working better for the new kernel. My main problem with Squeeze was that if you connect both ethernet and wifi, they works fine. However, if you boot without ethernet, the wifi was not up. Could you check if you can bring up wifi reliably without ethernet connected? This is the main reason that I cannot use squeeze. The wifi adapter I used wasby twinclouds - Debian

So besides Kernel support new devices, Lenny can perform well. However, is this true if I need Squeeze to support new devices, I also have need to do the same thing? But I found that your kernel works fine on Lenny. Is this normal?by twinclouds - Debian

Looks like rt3070 should be supported by rt2870sta as shown in http://wiki.debian.org/rt2870sta. Have you tried it? I never did, though.by twinclouds - Debian
I just received the WN721N. Using ath9k-htc kernel and ar9271.fw firmware, it works very well. The pings from my PC take less than 1ms similar to zd1211, while WN321G would take tens of ms. To copy a 50MB file, 721N took 22 seconds vs. 29, 32 for 321G and zd1211, respectively. It's response time is also good.by twinclouds - Debian
Yes. When you use Jeff's mtd0 uBoot, just unplug the USB drive and it will boot into Pogoplug OS. I have done this a few time sub never tried the Pogoplug service though.by twinclouds - Debian
I don't know why then. I never had such problem, so far. You might want to backup your installation and reinstall again (or using another USB driver to reinstall). You might also want to install Lenny instead (Jeff's old script as pointed from his webpage). I always has better luck with Lenny for wifi, but either one should work fine for booting up.by twinclouds - Debian
Were you install Debian using Jeff's script on the same Dockstar, which you want to start it up?by twinclouds - Debian
Not sure why you have so much difficulty to start your debian. After I installed Jeff's mtd0 uboot, I never had any problem to boot.by twinclouds - Debian
Gorgone Thanks. I will try it out. With Google Translate, language is not a problem :-).by twinclouds - Debian
I had some minor issues with rt73. It works. However, it has much longer response time than my old zd1211 based adapter. I can even notice that when I do ssh into it. When you ping it from a computer on the same LAN, it would have a few to tens ms delay while zd1211 is always under 1 ms. It has no problem in streaming mode or transfer files. Another thing I found out is Lenny works much betby twinclouds - Debian

Have you installed rt3070.bin also?by twinclouds - Debian
There is also a Pogoplug on sale at buy.com for $45. ( http://www.buy.com/prod/pogoplug-multimedia-sharing-device/q/loc/101/213816247.html ) It has more RAM that will be useful. However, after I took a look at Fry's last weekend, I found it is much larger than Dockstar. I am not sure I really want it because of the form factor. Unless it becomes very cheap, say below $25, of course.by twinclouds - Debian
Hi, Rudolf: The problem I found was that it takes WN321G longer to respond than for zd1211 when you ping it from another (Windows) computer on the same LAN. The delay could be 20ms or more while zd1211 took only less than 1 ms. I can notice a slower response when I SSH into it. However, for continuous file transfer, it is actually even slightly faster an the zd1211. I also observed a coupleby twinclouds - Debian
Rudolf: O.K. got it. Thanks. I also have trouble of using TL-WN321G. Will try to use WN721 to see if it works well (not receive it yet).by twinclouds - Debian
Rudolf: Thanks. I will try it tonight but as least the download to pc works fine. My old airlink101/zd1211 works fine but it is too bulky. The rt73 based WN321 works but the response time was slow (ping >100ms from local lan). Don't know this WN721 will work better, once it works.by twinclouds - Debian
It is an interesting idea. Do you think the speed/response time will be adequate? I tried remote desktop with VNC but it was rather slow. Hope the stand alone version with display-link will be faster?by twinclouds - Debian
Rudolf: Thanks for your reply. In addition to the .ko files, do you also need the ar9271.fw? Should that be put into the /lib/firmware folder? Another problem is that when I try to download it from http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/dwmw2/linux-firmware.git;a=tree, I either get a empty ar9271.fw file or if I click on the raw item, I got a file called git_kernel_org. Should I just renaby twinclouds - Debian
Rudolf: As far as I know, in addition to the kernel files included, it is also necessary to have drivers to make the wifi dongle work, e.g., zd1211 folder and rt73.bin in the /lib/firmware folder. Do you know which driver should be used for TP-Link WN721N?by twinclouds - Debian
gorgone Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > new heavy kernel online with zd* driver support gorgone: Thank you. There are a couple of wify dongles on sale at Meritline at good price. They use realtek 8191su and 8188su chips. Do you know any of your drivers will work for these? Thanks. Hi, gorgone, Thank you for your effort to generate and share new kernels with more and more features. I have tried them on both lenny and squeeze and they all worked fine. Considering the trouble people having with wifi support on squeeze (it may be my ignorance, but I have not see a simple wifi installation works on squeeze yet), I went back to lenny and it has been working fine without problby twinclouds - Debian
I was having a lot of trouble for using wifi usb dongles on Squeeze. However, based on others' experience, I switched back to Lenny and everything works fine once I installed it. You don't need any additional tricks or programs. It starts without wired lan connection. BTW, gorgone's kernel works fine on Lenny as well.
