The default for new configurations of samba is to be at the 2.x branch - so this would eliminate any cleints ability to connect prior to windows2000 and to force connections of version 3.* would limit you to Windows8 and above. however - the added benefit of forcing 3.* forces all clients to communicate over an encrypted stream. so the choice as they say is yours, depending on use case Seeby Gravelrash - Debian

if you would like to do a more specific server only howto based around the newer kernel and libs, that would be much appreciated The above HOWTO was correct at time of writing and included the option to connect from the plug to another windows share. cde Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > For a server only, only do "apt-get install samba"by Gravelrash - Debian
Not important at all - you only need to upgrade if you 1 - feel the need 2 - a patch you need to fix some or other functionality is only included in a later version mikeh49 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > A follow-on question: If everything is working > fine, both kernel and file system, how important > is it to upgrade the distro for aby Gravelrash - Debian

and by the above title i mean MY OWN Question For devices that are currently - for want of a better word - stuck on a particular kernel release to allow functionality. Would be it possible to utilise the existing download tar file e,g, Stretch and only change the repo pointers to Buster to allow for update to Buster packages whilst keeping the underlying kernel? i am going to presume itby Gravelrash - Debian
