Can't thank you enough - I've got a weird brain and peripheral stuff like this can gridlock me altogether. -update- Along with settings and router(s) login etc. I researched a previous discussion on the benefits of avahi daemon, but will decline and instead make sure every router of mine has IP reservation for Pogo's MAC address. All in all this was a powerful couple questionby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
that was enough to save my scatterbrain from cerebral gridlock :-) The other thing, what about Pogo plugged into a switch, do you program a permanent IP into it or use localhost name? I'm just trying to wrap my head around this and figure the most efficient physical flowchart, then do the physical wiring and everything. Almost there.by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
That's not true, but when your birthday is April Fool's Day you have to think of something! LOL -UPDATE- and now that's it's April 2nd, I have to admit, I was born yesterday LOL 2.0.by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
That CHAOS CALMER message Leggo found, does that qualify as an Easter Egg? Best laugh all day. For me though, alcohol + computers = do it over.by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
As an un-paid tester for some Windows LAN product, they tell me to get a switch and quit using a router. So today at Goodwill (where else?), I spy a Netgear GS605, gigabit home switch. $4.00! Truth be told, I don't know a thing about switches. I don't think there's any concept of DCHP, but on the other hand my main router I've entered the recent pogoplug's MAC addresby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic

-=NEW, RE-WRITTEN=- Over the years I've amassed a hefty PDF book collection. How-tos, cookbooks, cheat sheets, even many web pages and personal papers that I've converted to PDF. This would be super useful to be able to search the library and have results that are clickable. In use, for instance, my mom gets a large bag of bell peppers at a farmer's market. After 29 hours I powered off and on and the networking went. -UPDATE- I got it working again and won't use this from a browser, thereby eliminating the need to index. -UPDATER- this is interesting, here are the real-world specs on transfer speed, uploading to G-connect: Wireless n transfer: 148 kbs (note: !!! ethernet was unplugged and router is speedy/quality so there's no eby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Thanks a lot! I figured the G-connect had linux under the grill because of some open source credits list that I haven't fully looked at. Before proceeding I'll make a list of the helps you've given so I don't get lost in the heat of Penguin fighting LOL Watt-meter says it's between 5.7 and 7 watts, still runs barely warm, good there. off Topic forum and all... The same order I got the Pogoplug (last month) I also got a G-Technology G-CONNECT 500 GB GigE USB 2.0 Wireless Storage for iPad On the surface, I could ask little more. I'd been pricing USB sticks, @ $40 for a 128GB and this was $10 more, 500GB hard drive, Gigabit ethernet, wireless and USB (though v2) access. Sure, the reviews were fairly toast, but no reliabby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Just think, a farm of 20 plugs is 100 watts, has CPU value of 24,000 and over 5 Gigs RAM! I knew this was going to be a strange day...by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
I can't speak for Pogoplug users, or Arch nor Debian, and in my very limited Linux use over the years, it's a big deal when i set swappiness properly. Even Mint, I installed that on USB stick (and DSL) for use in Thins and desktop computers and notice it's way better when swappiness is set to 1. On the Mint it was originally like 60-70 in that area, and I'd read to set swappinby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Pretty sad when i don't have the jing for it, but I'll get 1-3 if I do (IF the rebate doesn't involve too much personal information). That's the main reason I was attracted to the pogoplug, because 3/4th of all the computing I do requires very little CPU really. When I do need hefty CPU, it's two PCs networked one way or another over LAN, using apps that figure out LANninby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Debian
yeah everything's great except a minor Samba problem. Windows is being a #%$ about the stock DATA or data, but there's hints i just need to set another account. Seems Samba and even ownCloud (no I haven't yet on Debian) get territorial about the areas they guard. Well, Debian's all updated so I'll not get too experimental before making a copy or thereabouts. Wow Gravelrash... everyone :-) I still have three questions and don't feel a rush to ask (I'll be busy for a while), but I'll just throw them out there... 1. My Arch partition copies to backup USB drives and even a hard drive I'd tested. I expect Debian to do the same. But i notice Linux partitions (using windows partition software) aren't easy to change size like othby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Debian
I was never a dedicated game player, probably because of how lousy i felt when UT3 came along and by the time i got a machine capable of runingm it, found it wasn't any fun. But UT 2004, I'm still staggered how great/fun this is on lower power Windows machines, but never got it running on Linux, which supposedly works, or something. My childhood hero Edison said most people give up at 99% of success. To be fair, I'd given up at 1%. Anyway thanks Gravelrash, Jeff Doozan, bodhi and everyone. What surprised me, is that in my case I didn't need to go back to the Uboot, either because (I don't know) it had been installed with Arch or the recent Rescue install kicked the hardware box to boot the Debian stick.by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Debian

Today is not only the first time I got into Pogo with any of the ThinClients, I've gotten in with 3 of 4 and expect the 4th to be easy. So far the way is to use a browser > Webmin, but if that works the rest should be easy. For what it's worth, the Thin Clients are pretty straighforward, but one, the 10Zig, has this listed in Program Files (it's still root-less linux):by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Bless yer heart :-) I'll start organizing this and roll up my sleeves ASAP! Attached is a picture taken the other day, showing why I have the jar of rubber bands on the desk. Thanks a lot! I'll go crash, another good day.by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
In addition to a great question asked by Gravelrash, I couldn't help but ask, how you access your Pogo-or-thereabouts plug? I've been using a Windows 7 x64 machine that's 100 watts, into a router and to whatever IP the router assigns it, using puTTY or WinSCP. I've tried using any of the ThinClient computers from Goodwill and haven't yet been able. They come with Winby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
A high quality learning experience in Linux; especially dealing with a headless computer and what that means. This little $18 box is more important to me than other pieces I won't talk about. It's a semi-divine puzzle, half perfect efficiency and the other half requiring DIY and certain interaction with other humans :-) So I'm going with Arch Linux running Webmin and Samba. Thanks for the thanks, and also nice link LME. I'd only mention this because it's the Off-Topic forum, but, when I posted the idea of rubber bands, I have a large jar of them on my desktop. The thought occurred to me, rubber bands remind me of the women in my life: they're flexible and keep everything together until I have confidence everything's alright, and then they snaby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
I'd try a rubber band around it and see if that's enough gentle pressure. Unless it's a living room centerpiece, then you'd prolly not want it looking goofy like that. A rubber band might keep the airflow as designed.by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Thanks from me too. I don't suppose you have a watt meter on hand would you? No matter what other devices I see out there, I keep coming back to the idea something can run on 5 watts or less. By way of comparison, my older DISH network 311 receiver takes up 20 watts even when it's supposedly off. Then a couple watts higher when "on". Ok on the serial cable, the past month has shown me how indispensable that item is. Hey while we're at it, is there any merit in making pretty much, just a boot manager out of the stock flash drive? I was about to ask about a minimal arch or something in the neighborhood of the space it takes for router firmware. But then again, since Pogo is headless then nothing is there to tell me theby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Rescue System
The adapter I got lately (SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter), it adapts a desktop and notebook IDE and a SATA port, to a USB plug. Works in the Pogoplug. This is super handy, that I can make an image on USB stuck, copy to the spare hard drive and if the hard drive gets whacked, the USB is still there to start again. Re-image in less time than a cigarette break used to be. So I get mad that all theseby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic

For the time being, I have one stable OS (alarm) archived on a slow USB stick, and operate my experiments on old, throwaway IDE drives (all 40GB). Seems like a good question to ask, has anyone found a most beneficial hard drive?by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
