'ole Newb here... :D I believe mine installed correctly, because it's not bricked and more often than not it'll boot into an Arch stick or hard drive. Before, 2/3rds of the time want to boot into the stock Pogoplug instead of Arch. Having said that, i can't reach into the rescue boot with PuTTy or WinSCP. Session attempt times out. I might have missed a memo here, and i fby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Rescue System
-heavily edited- a website called KissmyArch.. oh man, i needed that laugh today. - first update: Arch wouldn't boot after following the original instructions to the letter. What may have happened is, something to do with running Arch from the same kind of removable stick and then the new code tells it to mount and unmount anything that's a removable drive. - I hate to edit so drastically, but I had little idea DSL had a System Stats app. This helps immeasurably (or in other words measurably) to have a clue what's under the hood. A month ago I thought the 'ole Pogoplug was the only poor man's Zyxel possible, and believe it or not it's what i want to run permanently. But i come from the world of Windows, where I could setup what Iby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Yeah in fact i have one laying around, has I think a mini USB jack but I'll hold off for now. And yeah you're right about Webmin. I'm getting acquainted with that a little better today and tonight. Really, when i think of GUI or display, what's important to me is instantly seeing drives and folders. I still don't know how to tell PogoAlarm to mount any storage thatby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Displays
being I see photoframes at thrift stores once in a while, I was wondering, say I found a compatible photoframe. What is used to connect it to the Pogoplug? USB cable?by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Displays
Yeah two of my WYSEs look like that, though lacking gigabit or any wireless. And of course I'll drop in RAMs higher than 128 one of these days. The Parky Towers site is SO cool, I can't overstate how much I have respect for whoever made that site. Other than that, I expect to devote a week or month to OS's. The Pogoplug may possibly be perfect with Arch and then use that as theby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Just thinking out loud. Review: some hospital or clinical situation donated a shelf full of Thin Clients, to Goodwill. I scored 5 that work (one was fairly bricked). 3 Wyse's, a 10ZiG and one Neotek. From 300-ish Mhz to 1.2 Ghz, from 128 MB RAM to 512 MB, all with video outs. They're fairly wiped clean, and just for kicks I tried some recovery software to see what they deleted LOL Nothinby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Thanks for that, Ray. While we're on the topic of a GUI representation of a Pogoplug, I can't help but ask: would a thin client hooked-up to a Pogoplug see anything additionally? I ask because i scored some cheap Thin Clients at Goodwill, usually running Windows CE, and I'd be more than happy to use a Thin client to do things graphically from the Thin Client and set the Pogopluby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Displays
I'm GOING CRAZY! I almost quit again but the Arch copied to a hard drive and that works. Webmin works. This is enough progress to take a little break. I'm losing it. Sorry. Freaking works though. Because this hard drive is practically disposable, I might go nuts and download every Arch package (well, a few things) there is. -update- I see some desktop environments, will spend someby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
It's getting late, but before bed the thought occurred to share additional ideas. Lets say we scratch what i already said. Here's two other scenarios: 1. A PogoPlug on my terms. The original idea for Pogoplug isn't bad. Be able to access your data (99+% over LAN), and occasionally access/copy with a smart phone or other device. No need to remotely print. Yeah really, why DO i want to "upgrade" to Debian? Or, what would it take for me to delay Debian-on-Pogoplug?). Or, if I COULD run XP on this, why is that, what would I do? Here's a simple list: 1. Torrents. There's so many legitimate torrents that make the world a better place. -edit-out warez joke- 2. Yer right - bodhi that relates a story. Back in about '98 I was a student at a University, and found myself in a computer lab with a crashed computer and a day's work lost. They showed me how to save to floppy. I asked questions. Then got a home computer, and asked more questions. Eventually they put-up a sign saying essentially "don't ask about yer home computer" LOL Iby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
You know some of the sites on the net, where they say "how to install _____ on a PogoPlug"? That's why I bought one, because i thought it could run cool and 24/7 with light duty hard drive accessing. Again, a poor man's Zyxel, upgradable one set of pocket change at a time. That looks great bodhi. I've never dealt with Ebay but do have a PayPal. And a 37 cent balance LOL I'll strongly consider it, and thank you.by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Lucky me scored 3 old, 40 Gig hard drives from goodwill today. Yes, 40 Gig. But that means I can experiment and not worry too much. What I notice on the one i looked at is, it specifies 5v 0.72A and 12v 0.35A. Do you know off hand if they require both at the same time, or just one or the other? Lately i bought this (and hope for 2 more if I'm ever non-broke): http://www.newegg.com/Produby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
I knew I shouldn't have gotten rid of my Erector Set, decades ago - would have made a better NAS than, dare I say it, some Zyxels. I don't know if metal with holes in it shield better than the plastic cases in commercial NASs, as it's probably hit and miss millimeter to millimeter, but yeah, that might even look good on a desktop. I'm trying to be extra cautious here, and while I find a 32-bit machine to use Win32DiskImager (on Win7 x64 it doesn't dropdown USB device) the thought occurred to ask, what is specified as correct sized partition to deploy this .img into? In fact, now that i think about it, not any kind of bad idea to ask you general guidelines partitioning 4 and 8 Gig USB sticks? -update- firstby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Debian
Bookmarked... what a revelation. Before yesterday I'd never thought about the term Thin Client, but it's what I've been kicking around the back of my brain a long time. I bought those boxes yesterday based on the jacks with no knowledge what was inside. Was that a shock! I'm a thrift store junkie, and some computer place around here has a soft spot in their hearts for Goodwill. There's a company called Wyse that I'm pretty sure has merged with Dell lately. So I score three of them. What they are is, super low power computers - two are 300-ish megahertz 256 MB RAM and the 3rd is 1.2 Ghz and 512 RAM! All running windows CE. The ideaby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
I'm a bit scared to try it on a running box. What I'm gathering is, the power supply probably draws 2.8 watts, and the electronics an additional 2 watts. Now, something I WOULD try, is to changeover to another power supply, both to see if there's additional improvement in efficiency as well as a kinder poweroff, because this probably saved the manufacturer a few pennies and couby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Sure, and I added the arrow for the reset button. Last week it was originally fletched to ask others what the serial ports are. http://oi59.tinypic.com/2u4rib8.jpg Are you sure that button isn't on your E02? It's easy to overlook. Thanks a lot Gravelrash. I got it in and will go slow at first. My only major question for now, might this work imaged to used/formatted faux linux hard drive plugged-in or is it best to usb? I've at least a day of double-checking everything regardless.by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Debian
Wow, this is insightful enough to report. You know that little reset button inside the pogoplug? When the Pogo is "off" it sits at 4.5 watts (with Ethernet and USB plugged-in). Additionally I hold that button down it drops to 2.8 watts, and when you release it it shoots up to 6.9 and levels at 6.8 watts! FWIW.by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Neat! Running Qui's Arch Linux I tried both shutdown -h now as well as systemctl poweroff and both take Pogo off the session and down to 4.5 watts. As for no total shutdown, this is okay, just figuring the machine out. I'd rather this runs 5 watts 24/7 with downloading & torrent functions, than a 600 watt machine (because the power supply was cheap) half the time. Knowing thby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
You probably know this and I apologize if this has been mentioned anywhere. I just got a watt meter and have been running everything through it, mainly to find out which power supplies are most efficient. The Pogoplug didn't surprise me at 4.6 watts normal (6 watts rare peak), but when I used putty and commanded poweroff, the session ended and Pogoplug went from 4.6 watts to 4.5! If that doesn't spark the imagination :-)... along with the Pogoplug I bought a Rosewill RHSP-13001 load meter. So I've been running everything through that, especially power supplies. As of today the Pogoplug varies between 4.6 and 6 watts but settles in at 4.6. A 10-year old Seagate 250GB SATA draws 10 watts constant. I'm still copying stuff off it but might donate it to scienceby JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Off-Topic
Serial as in SATA? I ask because that was one of the descriptions at NewEgg, but it seems they intentionally mis-label Pogoplugs.by JoeyPogoPlugE02 - Displays
Truth be told, I haven't seen any Pogos with more than one USB stick, and when you think of it, the four total USB slots indicate this has a beefy enough power supply to power (dare i say it?), perhaps even an external hard drive.
