Another Marvell device with preliminary linux support

A patch was recently submitted to the OpenWrt project adding support for another Marvell device (Check Point L-50W). I was able to acquire a NOS device from ebay for $35 plus shipping. Specs are as follows:

  • CPU: Marvell Kirkwood 88F6281 @ 1.2GHz
  • RAM: 512MB
  • Flash: 512MB NAND
  • USB: 2x USB 2.0
  • SD Card Slot
  • ExpressCard/34 slot
  • LAN: 9 Gigabit Ports (2x Marvell 88E6171)
  • WAN: 1 Gbe (Marvell 88E1116R)
  • RJ-45 Serial Console @ 115200 8n1
  • Optional: mPCIe WiFI w/ Atheros AR9287 (bgn)

My device is an L-50W and has the wifi, don't know if the L-50 has the PCIe slot populated without a WiFi card or not. I have an L-50 on the way and will soon find out. I'll soon plan to use the OpenWrt patches to build a Debian Kernel this weekend and will post results. It will be interesting if the ExpressCard slot will support some of the USB 3 or SATA adapters available.

This device is interesting. It is almost the same as the Linksys EA4500 and QiZhiTong 501mv2. But with two 88E6171 network chips, thus 9 ports. With 512MB RAM and mPCIe, a very good router and a good NAS (with PCIe SATA).

Linux Kernel 5.6.x Kirkwood package and rootfs for GoFlex Home/Net, Pogoplug E02/Mobile/V4, iConnect, Dockstar, Sheevaplug, NSA320, NSA320S, NSA325, NSA310S, NSA310, Topkick, Netgear Stora, ASUS-M25, Iomega ix4-200d, QiZhiTong 501mv2, HP Thin Client T5325, LG N1T1, Linksys EA4500, Lenovo/Iomega ix2-ng, Toshiba Canvio Home NAS, Lenovo Iomega EZ, Dell KACE M300, Freecom Silverstore HNCN2, DNS-320-B1, Medion P89634, and all other Kirkwood plugs that are already in the mainline.

I suspect that you could just take the OpenWRT DTS and its dependencies, and it would work with our kernel and roofs here.

Got the L-50 unit today and the mPCIe is not populated, so the L-50W or L-50WD are more practical.
