@LeggoMyEggo,

Thanks, look good.

@Kang Jinsu,

I'm going to help you with these envs so that there is no need to enter the envs again. Since NAND is not available so the env image must be repacked. Let me know when you are ready to test.

Well, a new Debian is up.
I will write to the HDD.
There is also Kernel below, should I do this too?

It will take time.

Kang Jinsu,

No need to do extra step.

Debian-4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 rootfs has the kernel 4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1 installed in it.

and then,

[    4.678059] ata2: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)

That's what I meant when I said your HDD is suspected.

Try a cold start. Meaning removing the power cord, and wait for a few seconds and plug it in. After that, see if it boots normally.

Bodhi,

I hadn't posted this yet, while experimenting with the latest rootfs (4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1) booting off of USB, I am getting the same sata link down message that Kang Jinsu is getting. The Mycloud hangs at that point in the boot cycle and I have cycled the device four times with same result while trying to boot from USB. Pretty sure my hard drive is OK as it boots an older rootfs without issue and of course it is providing u-boot because I bricked the nand u-boot.

Ah. Thanks Leggo! That is a very useful data point.

Perhaps the 4.14 sata_oxnas driver has problem that we are not aware of. I will try booting with the HDD rootfs on Pogo V3 to confirm this.

@LME,

I checked my notes. I did test with a SATA drive in the slot with 4.14.176-oxnas-tld-1.

Could you reinstall u-boot to NAND again to see if you can?

All,

Does this Akitio box have 1 or 2 SATA ports?

UPDATE: I saw there is one internal and one eSATA port outside.

Thanks!

The flashing was good. So look like this Popo V3 u-boot version does not work for the Akitio. At that point, the SPL should load u-boot image at the 3rd block. My guess is that it was loaded, but cannot start.

FYI,

I've verified that the 4.14.180-oxnas-tld-1 works fine with USB and HDD on the Popo V3 Classic (booting with USB rootfs and HDD non-root).

So there must be something in the Akitio that is different. Memory should not be the problem, because the kernel recognized that correctly (in Jinsu bootlog):

[    0.000000] Memory: 242660K/262144K available (7168K kernel code, 199K rwdata, 1524K rodata, 1024K init, 245K bss, 19484K reserved, 0K cma-reserved)

There is a IRQ related patch in mainline in kernel 5.x.x. I'll have to check that to see if it would make a difference for this Akitio box.

Not sure if I will go straigth to build 5.4 or 5.6 (I might have to, if backporting turn out to be too cumbersome).

Not sure if it makes a difference, the Akitio has a power switch as well as a reset switch. The power switch is not functional without the stock kernel.

Edit: Just had a thought, it is confusing that "magic dust" booting from SATA appears to work perfectly with this device (using a u-boot which is not the stock version) yet saving updated u-boot to NAND does not work. This leads me to believe latest oxnas u-boot binary is fine and the issue appears to be with the saving location in NAND. Would the diffence in size of NAND (256MB for Akitio vs. 128MB for Pogo Pro) make any difference?

I believe it will work. Both buttons are defined in the kernel DTS:

root@tldDebian:/usr/src/linux-4.14.180-oxnas/arch/arm/boot/dts# less ox820-akitio.dts
keys {
                compatible = "gpio-keys-polled";
                pinctrl-names = "default";
                pinctrl-0 = <&pinctrl_buttons>;
                #address-cells = <1>;
                #size-cells = <0>;
                poll-interval = <100>;
                power {
                        label = "power";
                        gpios = <&gpio0 11 1>;
                        linux,code = <KEY_POWER>;
                };
                reset {
                        label = "reset";
                        gpios = <&gpio1 6 1>;
                        linux,code = <KEY_RESTART>;
                };
        };

Yes it seems to be the case.

> Would the diffence in size of NAND (256MB
> for Akitio vs. 128MB for Pogo Pro) make any

We have it taken cared of by defining the mdts this way:
[    0.000000] Kernel command line: root=/dev/sda1 console=ttyS0,115200 mtdparts=41000000.nand:14m(boot),-(data) earlyprintk=serial

So the mtd0 size equal to 14M is all it matters. The rest is whatever the remained free space. We only use the first 2M in mtd0.

Further thought, if you have stock mtds dump, you could try to flash it back to mtd0 to see if it will make any difference. Or you could also try flashing one of my older versions:

Quote

Updated 16 May 2014

I've uploaded the 2013.10 u-Boot image for Pogoplug V3 Oxnas

Usual Disclaimer

Flashing uBoot to mtd0 could potentially brick your box! please have serial console, or JTAG set up before hand to recover from any mistake or bad flash. The instruction to flash uBoot image to mtd0 is included here. But please proceed only at your own risk. However, there is a recovery path if any thing goes wrong. But it will require the box to be opened and then a SATA HDD attached to the hidden SATA port inside.

Recovery

Unlike the Kirkwood boxes, there is no option to boot with UART that we know of. Should you mess up your NAND mtds while flashing U-Boot, the recovery path for Pogo V3 is to boot with a SATA hardisk that was specially prepared to have all necessary files: Stage1 SPL, U-Boot, and rootfs in the HDD. This is possible because the Pogo V3 Oxnas ROM always tries to find the boot loader in SATA first if there is one attached. See this A new kernel for OXNAS thread (at Arch site) for how to do that in case you have to recover, or just want to follow that approach and avoid flashing U-Boot to NAND.

Download U-Boot image at Dropbox:

uboot.2013.10-tld-3.ox820.bodhi.tar

uboot.2013.10-tld-3.ox820.mtd0.img

=====

But the thing that puzzles me is the SPL and u-boot currently in HDD was built for Pogo V3, yet it booted without problem. So as fas as u-boot is concerned, these 2 boxes are identical.

Let me ping shv to see if he is still at his old email. I think he built the HDD u-boot images using my GitHub.

Was the latest uboot created to boot separate dts? Do the older uboots not have this capability?

I'll try the older uboot versions to see if it makes a difference.

Edit: OK, tried 2013 u-boot version and it has same result, hangs after setting PLLA.

Yes it has this device tree capability from the initial version.

Bodhi,

I created another "magic dust" disk to test latest Debian rootfs. It hangs unfortunately (tried 7 boots):

OX820 # run bootcmd

Gonna start with an earlier Debian rootfs and upgrade to 4.14.180 to see if it still hangs at boot.

EDIT: Alright, did that and have the same issue. Bummer.

Re: Hello, help to fix my device... [Akitio MyCloud Mini]

LeggoMyEggo,

I suspected this is the problem:

[    4.507376] sata_oxnas: resetting SATA core
[    4.507950] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 625142448 512-byte logical blocks: (320 GB/298 GiB)
[ 4.520102] usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_wdm
[ 4.522109] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off

[    4.536706] sata_oxnas: resetting SATA core

But I'm not sure if this was a wrong IRQ trigger, or the power to SATA port was no longer sustained. The 1st reset was reasonable, the 2nd is not.

No problem, reverted to 4.4.54 and all is well. Boned up on SATA booting, hadn't done that for a couple years lol. Don't really need the box for anything right now but I feel for my plugs and show them that all of them are loved. Don't want the Akitio to get jealous of my M300s or the Cisco ON100..

Gonna update this one to the last 4.4 linux kernel and I'll report back.

LeggoMyEggo,

That told me there is some kernel difference between this Akitio and the Pogoplug Pro in kernel 4.14.x. And I have not learned about that yet (OpenWrt has some extra rootfs setup, but I cannot tell what was the purpose).

I know :) I have trouble trying this too. I need to populate a spared HDD to see if the Pogo Pro has the same issue, but that's a little bit time consuming for me right now.

I went ahead and updated up to 4.4.201 and everything appears to be working fine. Even was able to compile a module for a Realtek rtl8821au USB module and no issues. So up to 4.4.201 is safe with this Akitio.

Also, wanted to correct an earlier statement where I said the power button did not work. It does indeed work, you have to hold it for over 10 seconds to get it to power off. That was longer than I expected.

I haven't been able to do this for another while.

Well, is this problem still ongoing?
It's been taking quite a long time...
I think this problem is difficult.

Hmm... I removed the thermal pad on the CPU side,
(There was not originally.
To prevent problems by overheating the CPU.)
so the booting is a bit unstable, but it works.
When will this problem be solved?
Thank you everyone.

I tried to use a new operating system,
but it still won't boot.

+ I have a new Pogo V2.
(I definitely ordered the P22,
but why is the E02 in the box...?)

Kang Jinsu,

P22 is the same OXNAS SoC as this Akitio box. And same as Pogoplug Pro V3, but without Wifi.

But E02 is Kirkwood:

Debian:
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096
U-boot:
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381

Make sure you use the Kirkwood Debian rootfs and u-boot for this E02 box.
