running motion on dockstar (security camera) [out of topic ... please moderate]
December 17, 2012 03:44AM
[EDIT] my sincerest appologies. after many modifications in the /etc/motion/motion.conf file I finally found that trying to add a lot of text at the bottom left part of the picture was my mistake. It is therefore not related to debian, dockstar, squeeze ... it is motion configuration related. If this thread is to be moved or deleted I will take no offence.

Hi all knowledgeable people !

first, i have to say I've spent a lot of time browsing forums, blog posts, internet pages, etc. to try and find a solution to my problem.
Your help will be very much appreciated ! (if it's too obvious, please point me in the right direction)

I am trying to run a security webcam with motion on my freshly installed dockstar (squeeze).
The very first time I installed the webcam and motion, everything was working fine. but the day after (and probably a reboot later) it was not working anymore.

Here are some pieces of information I've seen many times on forums so I guess you'll need those.

My webcam is : QuickCam® Communicate STX (V-UBK45)

I'm using Motion on an iConnect, which is kirkwood as well. It takes a lot of CPU power as floating point is emulated; I get about 5 FPS at 320x240. What sort of frame rate are you seeing?

No problem... I run motion as well on a Pogoplug V2 under Debian Squeeze... for my weather station... works fine.

hi.
I did the test of running motion on my dockstar at different framerate.

From 5fps to 10 fps, the CPU usage increase from 30% to 70%. Then
from 11fps to 30 fps (my webcam setting according to the specs), it drops and stays stable at 30% of CPU usage.

hope it helps.
