NSA325 v2 isn't Boot
October 10, 2021 05:41AM
Hello.

I have a NSA325 v2 and i managed to write to NAND , with Uboot 2016.05-tld-1.
I made an USB ext3 with name rootfs. i downloaded Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 and just extracted as root in rootfs. I skipped step 3 (optional) and step 4 with uImage (because i use Uboot after 2012). Tried cold Boot as the forum suggest.

After some failed experiment, finally came back to default env.
I used this command:

setenv default -a
saveenv

It doesn't boot from USB, even completely remove machid with:
setenv machid
saveenv

I suppose something goes wrong with my env. Embedded systems is NOT familiar to me. Could somebody help me?
My final target is to have openmediavault on this little machine

When it boot.....

cratsil1979,

Indeed your envs are are the internal envs after you did this
setenv default -a
saveenv

The internal envs are not the same as the one in the image that you have downloaded from the release thread.

Quote
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381

a. Download the default u-boot envs at Dropbox:

uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.bodhi.tar
md5:
3823eef10011b864859d31a76470e0e3
sha256:
c8db95a4225e8d78bdaaaa372bd5a87e4b98f3448dd9c62fc96c72b2df1a997c

This tarball includes 3 files:

uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.img (the default envs image to be flashed)
uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment (the content of the default envs in text format)
uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.64K.img (small envs image to be flashed on HP T5325 only).

So now you need to populate the envs with the uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment to set them to the real default envs.

Mount your USB rootfs to another Linux box. And assuming it is mounted at /media/sdb1,

cd /media/sdb1/boot

And copy the file uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment to uEnv.txt

cp -a uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment uEnv.txt

And modify the DTB file name in this uEnv.txt to have NSA325 DTB:
dtb_file=/boot/dts/kirkwood-kirkwood-nsa325.dtb

Sync and umount.
sync
umount /media/sdb1

Take it back to the NSA325, power up, interrupt serial connsole, and try booting:
boot

If it boots successfully to Debian, then congrats! now you can save the envs, post back here the good news.

=============

OTOH, If it does not boot successfully, we need to check the envs to see why.

Recycle the power. interrupt u-boot at count down and

run bootcmd_uenv
printenv
And post the log here

=============

Generally, we want to avoid doing this.

setenv default -a
saveenv

It should be done only as a last resort. The correct approach is to try to polulate the envs with the a set of default envs that are released with the u-boot image. The internal envs are for emergency use only.

debian login:

So my main problem now is, how to solve the error with machid.
Maybe was much more easier to flash with uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.img (but i dont know how !!!)

Thx in advance

cratsil1979,

Excellent! Once you are here.

> debian login:

Log in as root/root.

And then flash the default envs image as instructed in the u-boot release thread:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381

Quote

8. Flashing default u-boot envs image (if you are upgrading from 2016.05-tld-1 u-boot, you can skip this step 8).

As described in step 1, u-boot envs must be defined in /etc/fw_env.config as

# MTD device name Device offset Env. size Flash sector size Number of sectors
/dev/mtd0 0xc0000 0x20000 0x20000

This default envs image supports booting with multiple disk drives (and hubs) attached. The disk drives could be any type (usb, sata, sd card). The scanning logic and default envs were set to automatically boot the box with the following required configuration:

For whatever reason, if you can't set up your configuration to satisfy the following 4 requirements, then don't flash this defaut envs image. It might not boot properly. In this case, section C below can be used to tailor the envs to your specific configuration.

r1. There must be only one partition among all partitions from all drives that contains the kernel files. The 2 kernel files are /boot/uImage and /boot/uInitrd.
r2. The partition that contains the 2 kernel files must be partition 1 in a disk drive
r3. The partition that contains the rootfs must be labeled rootfs
r4. The rootfs partition is recommended to be type Ext3 (this is not a hard requirement, ext4 should boot OK, but Ext3 will ensure no problem).

So the bottom line is if you have only one rootfs in a single Ext3 partition, which is labeled as rootfs, then you're all set.

a. Download the default u-boot envs at Dropbox:

uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.bodhi.tar
md5:
3823eef10011b864859d31a76470e0e3
sha256:
c8db95a4225e8d78bdaaaa372bd5a87e4b98f3448dd9c62fc96c72b2df1a997c

This tarball includes 3 files:

uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.img (the default envs image to be flashed)
uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment (the content of the default envs in text format)
uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.64K.img (small envs image to be flashed on HP T5325 only).

b. Extract the archive to /tmp
cd /tmp
tar -xf uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.bodhi.tar

c. Save current envs with fw_printenv, or just copy/paste the listing into a text file.
fw_printenv > current_envs.txt

d. Flash u-boot envs to NAND location 0xC0000.

Be extra careful with the next 2 commands, you should see output that look like below. If there is error, then do not reboot, post your problem here so we can help.

/usr/sbin/flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0xc0000 1
Expected output:
Erase Total 1 Units
Performing Flash Erase of length 131072 at offset 0xc0000 done

/usr/sbin/nandwrite -s 786432 /dev/mtd0 uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.img
Expected output:
Writing data to block 6 at offset 0xc0000

e. Modify the following u-boot variables using fw_setenv:

e.1 ArcNumber:

Deprecated. See older u-boot release if interest in the hisorical reason for ArchNumber.

e.2 Box specific envs:

Then for all boxes, restore these 2 envs using the saved envs text in step c (replace xxx with the real saved values)
fw_setenv mtdparts 'xxxxxxxxx'
fw_setenv ethaddr 'xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx'

e.3 uEnv.txt envs correction (optional):

These envs are important to be set if you plan to use uEnv.txt (see section C).

fw_setenv uenv_init_devices 'echo Initializing devices...; setenv init_usb "usb start"; setenv init_ide "ide reset"; setenv init_mmc "mmc rescan"; for devtype in $devices; do run init_$devtype; done'
fw_setenv uenv_read 'echo Loading envs from $device_type $disk_number...; if load $device_type $disk_number:1 $uenv_addr /boot/uEnv.txt; then setenv uenv_loaded 1; echo ... envs loaded; fi'
fw_setenv uenv_load 'run uenv_init_devices; setenv uenv_loaded 0; for devtype in $devices; do for disknum in $disks; do if test $uenv_loaded -eq 0; then setenv device_type $devtype; setenv disk_number $disknum; run uenv_read; fi; done; done;'
fw_setenv uenv_read_disk

And for boxes that boot with SATA as rootfs. Please make this adjustment if your boot drive is SATA. This will help the "ide reset" to work properly. There seems to be a bug in u-boot that if you do "ide reset" too quickly in succession, the SATA drive might have problem spinning up).
fw_setenv bootcmd_uenv 'run uenv_load; if test $uenv_loaded -eq 1; then run uenv_import; fi; sleep 3'

f. Adjust the DTB name to boot with a rootfs that has FDT kernel 3.17+ (this is the normal case):

Find your box DTB file in the rootfs /boot/dts directory and adjust the env to it. For example, if the box is the Dockstar
fw_setenv dtb_file '/boot/dts/kirkwood-dockstar.dtb'

In the special case when you are booting with a non-FDT kernel 3.16 or earlier, or if you have appended the DTB to uImage. Remove the DTB file env. If not sure please post question before continuing.
fw_setenv dtb_file

h. For sanity check, list you envs again
fw_printenv

If there is error in listing u-boot envs, stop here and post your problem so we can help.

Remember to save away your old envs text file created in step c for future reference in case more need to be restored.

i. Done step 8.

It seems like a lot, but it is a general insruction. The essence is Step 8.d and then Step 8.f. That will be enough for booting, but the other extra stuff also need to be done now or later.

Re: NSA325 v2 isn't Boot

@cratsil1979, I'm not going to claim to fully understand it, but it's because of the LetsEncrypt certificates that had a change on the first of the month. The easiest thing to do is to tell wget not to check certificates:
wget --no-check-certificate -O "/etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/openmediavault-archive-keyring.asc" https://packages.openmediavault.org/public/archive.key
You might want to try to update your ca-certificates:
apt-get update
apt-get install ca-certificates
I'm the first to say that I don't know if that's all it takes.

Thanx renojim. After your suggestion i had a successfull installation with OMV 5.
Now I face another problem. The tranfer rate over my new OMV box is very limited (about 10MB/s). The original stock had much more (70-80MB/s)

I suspect the ethernet card of my NSA325v2.
It has the default MAC (52:3b:20:9c:11:51) that included in uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.img
My real MAC adress is 4c:9e:ff:XX:XX:XX

When use
setenv ethaddr 4c:9e:ff:XX:XX:XX
saveenv
the new MAC stored but the ethernet card is disabled. When come back to default (52:3b:20:9c:11:51) my card plays again.
After that i tried with uEnv.txt boot method. I had same results.

Is there any possible the wrong MAC adreess limits the tranfer rate?
Thx in advance

cratsil1979,

For certain router, the MAC address change takes sometime to work (the old MAC is still in the router table). If you can log into the router, clear it manually to make it accept the new MAC address faster.

And to make sure that it works no matter what the router thinks, use static IP address.

> Is there any possible the wrong MAC adreess limits

No, it should not affect the transfer rate. You can run iperf to test the network performance to see the network transfer rate without anything else involved (i.e. OMV).

For example,

Could this be the same problem? Apart from that I've reset the uBoot envs to default (no change), upgraded the kernel from 5.13.6 a few times (it does not see eth0; I'm beginning to think that my eth0 is gone due to a hard poweroff event).

Dźwiedziu,

When you post log, please post the entire u-boot log so I can see which u-boot you are running

> Could this be the same problem?
> Apart from that
> I've reset the uBoot envs to default (no change),

Most likely the same problem.

That's not a recommended way to reset the envs. Usually you just flash the env image again, or use the uEnv.txt script to repopulate the envs and then after you can boot, save them. It is because there is no guarantee that internal envs will be the same as the real ones in the env image.

So in this case, your u-boot installation might have been 2016.05-tld-1. When you do env reset to default, it populate the envs with a set of envs that do not boot correctly with your current rootfs.

Yes, do the same thinng cratsil did. Repopulate the envs with uEnv.txt.

Ah sorry. The deal is that I can boot the Debian Bullseye rootfs image from 2021-09-26. But within it I don't have eth0 available (and no useful messages about it, except the device does not exist).

When I try to upgrade the kernel to linux-5.14.9-kirkwood-tld-1 the whole "Error: invalid dtb and unrecognized/unsupported machine ID" happens.

And I can switch back and forth just by changing /uInitrd and /uImage symlinks.
Re: NSA325 v2 isn't Boot

Dźwiedziu,

For ethernet problem, I need to see the whole serial boot log for the Debian Bullseye (from uboot banner until the login prompt).

The machine ID error was because you envs are not set properly (you need to use the uEnv.txt to populate a correct set of envs).

Your bullseye rootfs has the DTB embedded in uImage, thats why you can boot with the “bad” envs. If you dont want to reset envs with uEnv.txt, then you have to keep doing that (append the DTB to uImage) when install new kernel.

Last things first: 5.14.9 with included dts works, eth0 also.

Still have no idea what's up with the envs. In the mtd1 dump the dtb_file was set wrongly, but it didn't boot with correct dtb_file in uEnv.txt. Still didn't work when I've fw_setenv dtb_file correctly. And still I don't have idea why it didn't flash the U-Boot defaults (see end of post).

As for the envs, I have no bloody idea at this point. After nanderase'ing mtd1 and flashing the image from the 2017.07 U-Boot thread I can still see variables that are not in the uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.img file (see my previous posts for fw_printenv output) As far as I understand NSA325 has a separate partition for envs OR the previous owner repartitioned:
cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00100000 00020000 "uboot"
mtd1: 00080000 00020000 "uboot_env"
mtd2: 00080000 00020000 "key_store"
mtd3: 00080000 00020000 "info"
mtd4: 00a00000 00020000 "etc"
mtd5: 00a00000 00020000 "kernel_1"
mtd6: 02fc0000 00020000 "rootfs1"
mtd7: 00a00000 00020000 "kernel_2"

OK first thing first and then I'll examine the log to find some clue about Ethernet.

We are not using mtd1 at all with the new u-boot. The envs location is 0xC0000, which is 768K on mtd0.

U-boot installation instruction: https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381

d. Flash u-boot envs to NAND location 0xC0000.

Be extra careful with the next 2 commands, you should see output that look like below. If there is error, then do not reboot, post your problem here so we can help.

/usr/sbin/flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0xc0000 1
Expected output:
Erase Total 1 Units
Performing Flash Erase of length 131072 at offset 0xc0000 done

/usr/sbin/nandwrite -s 786432 /dev/mtd0 uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.img
Expected output:
Writing data to block 6 at offset 0xc0000

And the fw_env.config specifies that location:

Quote

As described in step 1, u-boot envs must be defined in /etc/fw_env.config as

# MTD device name Device offset Env. size Flash sector size Number of sectors
/dev/mtd0 0xc0000 0x20000 0x20000

Ethernet problem.

The problem is when you appended the DTB to uImage after creating the rootfs (which you should not do when you booting with new u-boot, however, that comes later after you have restore the good envs in uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.img.

The DTB was the wrong one. It was GoFlex Net.

[ 0.000000][ T0] OF: fdt: Machine model: Seagate GoFlex Net
[ 0.000000][ T0] printk: bootconsole [earlycon0] enabled

So without changing envs at all, you could recreate the uImage on this rootfs to use the NSA325 DTB. And it will boot with Ethernet OK.

4b. Boot with DTB file embedded in the kernel image.Again, this step 4b is for stock U-Boot only.

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box.

Generate the uImage and uInitrd (the kernel files vmlinuz-5.14.9-kirkwood-tld-1 and initrd.img-5.14.9-kirkwood-tld-1 were generated by dpkg in Step 3):
cd /boot
cp -a zImage-5.14.9-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-nsa325.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n 5.14.9-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
