Trying to revive Dockstar with uboot 2011.12.
February 20, 2022 08:17PM
Greetings!

I've spent several hours trying to revive a Dockstar that was previously running Arch (don't recall the release) that stopped booting. It has been quite some time since I set it up with Arch and I don't recall the details other than that I followed directions successfully from the related Arch pages that seem to no longer be available.

Regardless, I found this forum and have tried to boot using the Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 kernel per this forum post but the result is a solid Amber LED after netconsole shows the uImage and uInitrd being loaded from the USB stick and message indicating that the kernel is being started.

Netconsole is working. uBoot 2011.12 is installed. Here is output from netconsole:

and then nothing.

Ive searched the forum and seen advice to try different USB sticks, which I've done but I don't have ready access to multiple sticks and I believe at least one of them was working successfully before.

I've looked on the USB stick on another linux box after this non-responsive state and the only thing that seems to be in /var/log are some files that seem related to the usb_scan. Seems that the kernel is not transitioning to use the USB stick if it is booting at all.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on how to best to proceed here.

tangoRomeo,

Power up, interrupt netconsole at countdown, and

printenv
boot

Netconsole does not output more after
Starting kernel ...

So that's all you will get during u-boot booting. Once you can log into Debian, you can set it up further to see more output during kernel booting.

Please post the entire netconsole log for this boot here.

======

After you wait for about 20 seconds, start looking for the Dockstar in the router, or use a scanning app such as Linux nmap, or IOS Fing to see if you can find a new IP address appear.

Or ping the hostname of this Dockstar

ping debian.local

I'll tatke a look at your envs. And perhaps will ask more info from you.

In the mean time, you can also try using the latest rootfs: Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.

Thanks for your time bodhi.

The output in the first post is essentially what you requested but I did this again anyway after interrupting netconsole countdown:
printenv
boot

with output

netcat -l -u -s 172.16.13.107 -p 6666

Starting kernel ...

I have, and continue to look for the device on the network. The router shows no IP address assigned. I have used Wireshark to capture network traffic. I can see the netconsole exchange with the dockstar but after "Starting kernel...." there is no additional traffic associated with the MAC address seen in the dialog. No DHCP requests for a lease for the device.

As an experiment, I modified /etc/network/interfaces to assign a static IP address to the device. No response from a ping on that IP address. No response trying to ping debian.local. No network traffic seen from that MAC address.

I'll look at the Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 though the post on that suggested that rootfs might need some workarounds for use with the older (2011.12) u-Boot.

I can try nmap if you think that will find something that Wireshark isn't seeing but I don't see why that would be the case.

Cheers!

bodhi

I was successful booting with the Debian-5.13.6-tld-1-rootfs! (with u-Boot 2011.12)

I will now look into updating u-Boot on the dockstar.

Thanks for your great work on this!
