Debian on Checkpoint L-50
March 20, 2023 08:56AM
probably one here for Bodhi -

apologies for the posting here, i can never decide where best to put new queries and suggestions for devices :)

I have seen that a very performant device made by Checkpoint is currently available for not a lot on money at all and is supported under Openwrt........ now me being me, thought i would bring it to the attention of the foremost debian hacksite and ask if it is something that could be considered to be included in the project.??

Checkpoint L-50 VPN/Firewall

Check Point L-50 is Marvell Kirkwood 88F6821 1200MHz router with 8+1 GbE LAN ports and 1 GbE WAN port. It have version with additional bgn wifi and dsl or without it.[/b]

for me it would be ideal if i could assist in getting it included - Bodhi i would happily furnish you with one if it would assist? My stated intention for this is to install debain and run openswitch or quagga on it........... others may see it as a sweet littlle device with a bucket full on interfaces to play with :) :) :)

Sure I took a loook at the specs. It is a quite hackable Kirkwood box. This one has 2x 88E6171 switch, each support 4 ports. So it is a bit different than router with only one switch.

Besides, the most diffult info to find (with boards like these) is already somewhere in OpenWrt source. Pawel has done the hard work :)

Can you post the full model and product number of both versions? I see one on eBay with this model. Wonder if it is the one with Wifi.

I see Wikidevi listed:

Quote

L-50
L-50W # Wifi
L-50WD # Wifi and ADSL

At least get a wifi version becasue it is more flexible. The L-50 is a wire only version, it seems.

But on the unit label, does it say L-50W or L-50WD? if not, it's hard to tell which version you'll get.[UPDATED: It does say L-50W]

Re: Checkpoint L-50

All versions are supported the L-50 has no wireless and no ADSL annex, the L-50W has 802.11bgn WiFi via an Atheros AR9287 PCIe based card and the L-50WD adds an ADSL annex board to that. There may be an L-50D, but I haven't seen one. The ADSL annex board is currently unsupported. I never did get around to testing the ExpressCard/34 slot to see what it would support.

Thanks for the offer Gravelrash! But it is quite low cost for me, so I ordered the L-50W on eBay. You know your money will have better use :)

My Checkpoint has landed :)
its currently stuck in a reboot loop - but seeing as it will be getting modded thats no biggy...

the model is L-50 and the product name is SG-80A

below is a link taken from the community over at Openwrt and if im not mistaken our very own Rayknight has had some input to it already :) :). I have the bases of base models at hand at the moment and i have on order another one that has all the bells and whistles - that one will be receiving Openwrt by default as i have a use case for it.

OpenWrt - HOWTO Checkpoint L-50

So..............

What do you need from me in terms of output and investigation to get the ball rolling on this one?? i have the next week off as annual leave so it shouldn't be too much of a stretch to fit this in with all the rest of the jobs H.R.H has in store for me :)

Gravelrash,

in Expert@MAINTENANCE_MODE,

ifconfig -a

And for each port x 0..10
ethtool ethx

If you have serial console, at u-boot prompt
md.l 0xF1010000 8
md.l 0xF1010100 1
md.l 0xF1010140 1

==========

I'm going to look for OpenWrt patches for this box.

Unable to run the command for md.l xxxxx

the console port at the back that i am currently connecting to does not allow for the visual display of the uboot - there may be an equivalent once the maintenance image it keeps boot cycling into - ill have a look and see what i can glean - failing that its a case of whip the case cover off and see if there is a direct serial connector inside i can access

Thanks! those are good info in case we we need to tweak the OpenWrt patches.

Once you've installed OpenWrt, I'd like to have the same info. I think the md.l commands will work with their u-boot version.

Ive taken the case cover off and had a nosey about - the board is very securely fastened to the case with what looks like heatsink cement under the mainboard -> heatsink -> case and a few small screws.

i cant find an equivalent (from my limited knowledge and quick google search) to the md.l command...

what is that exactly?? please educate me

Yes! from the info page, look like they have a new u-boot. So once I can find the DTS in their tree, that would make it easier to get it booting Debian.

@rayknight
Are you aware of any pinout/connector on the board that will allow direct access to the uboot output on the standard firmware setup?

Just flashed Openwrt to another L-50 this one has wireless and ADSL - adsl doesnt initialize, which is to be expected as it isnt supported by openwrt. elsewise once the correct variables are applied to eth0 at the uboot, all works fine...

let the hackathon commence :)

Cool :)

Power up or reboot. Interrupt serial console countdown and
printenv
help

And please post the entire serial console boot log.

its around the back of the device and is clearly marked as "console" - you need a usb to RJ45 ttl adaptor........ in some people parlance.... (mine) a usb cisco cable :)

1. Create the USB rootfs using Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

Since this is a new u-boot 2020.04, skip Step 4 (this step is for stock u-boot only).

2. Attach the USB rootfs to the USB port in the front (or back if preferred). Power up, interrupt serial console and,

setenv bootdev usb
setenv device '0:1'

setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial'
setenv dtb_file '/boot/dts/kirkwood-l-50.dtb'

setenv load_uimage_addr 0x800000
setenv load_uimage 'echo loading uImage ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_uimage_addr /boot/uImage'

setenv load_initrd_addr 0x1100000
setenv load_initrd 'echo loading uInitrd ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_initrd_addr /boot/uInitrd'

setenv load_dtb_addr 0x2c00000
setenv load_dtb 'echo loading DTB $dtb_file ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_dtb_addr $dtb_file'

setenv bootcmd_exec 'if run load_uimage; then; if run load_initrd; then if run load_dtb; then bootm $load_uimage_addr $load_initrd_addr $load_dtb_addr; else bootm $load_uimage_addr $load_initrd_addr; fi; else if run load_dtb; then bootm $load_uimage_addr - $load_dtb_addr; else bootm $load_uimage_addr; fi; fi; fi'

setenv bootcmd 'usb start; run bootcmd_exec; reset'

and then boot

boot
