Sounds like you've installed it incorrectly. Reinstall kernel 6.2.8-mvebu-tld-2.4. When you do that it will replace the current installation, the vmlinuz and initramfs will be created automatically. You would not have to do it yourself, dpkg will generate them.

Below is the installation instruction for kernel 6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1
Quote

Installation

NOTE: the following steps are for a general kernel upgrade. For initial installation, please see "Installation Instruction for specific boxes" in the thread description at the top of this release thread.

1. Backup your current zImage, uImage, and uInitrd. In the /boot directory, these are files for your current kernel (xx.xx.xx is the version number):
uInitrd
uImage
zImage-xx.xx.xx-mvebu-xxx
initrd.img-xx.xx.xx-mvebu-xxx
System.map-xx.xx.xx-mvebu-xxx
vmlinuz-xx.xx.xx-mvebu-xxx
config-xx.xx.xx-mvebu-xxx
dts/

2. Extract the kernel and the DTB files in the archive:

cd /boot
tar -xjf linux-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2
tar -xf linux-dtb-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1.tar

3. And install it with dpkg. Remove flash-kernel first to avoid potential problem (if flash-kernel was not installed then you'll see some error output):

cd /boot
apt-get remove flash-kernel
dpkg -i linux-image-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1_1.0_armhf.deb

4. Create uImage and uInitrd (kernel file initrd.img-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1 was generated by dpkg in step 3). I am using the Zyxel NAS326 as an example here. Please replace armada-380-zyxel-nas326.dtb below with the appropriate DTB name for your box.

cd /boot
cp -a zImage-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/armada-380-zyxel-nas326.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -a 0x00000000 -e 0x00000000 -n initramfs-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1 -d initrd.img-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-1 uInitrd

5. The new uImage and uInitrd files should be created in /boot directory now. You're ready to reboot the system:
sync

shutdown -r now

SPI flash works. But RTC needs to be looked at (RTC is on I2C bus).

FAT works.

That's 4MB SPI flash.

That might have something to do with the DTS or /etc/inittab. I'll take a look back on the HP T5325 to refresh my memory.

Mischif,

Edit the /etc/inittab file

Replace
T0:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 115200 linux
With
T0:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS2 115200 linux

And with serial console connected, reboot

sync
shutdown -r now
This time it should maintain serial console throughout.

bodhi,

Changing /etc/inittab was the missing link, now I get a login prompt over serial.

The rtc seems to be working from what the logs are saying:
Saving the system clock to /dev/rtc0.
Hardware Clock updated to Mon Apr 17 17:49:32 PDT 2023.

But for some reason restarting doesn't seem to work; I have to hold down the power button:
root@debian:~# shutdown -r now
[...]
[10404.356209][ T2798] reboot: Restarting system
[10405.361306][ T2798] Reboot failed -- System halted

Since /dev/sdb doesn't come up as a mountable block device there isn't anything to see about it when the system comes up:
root@debian:~# lspci

Yes indeed! I must have looked at the old dmesg.

OK. I think this probably needs its own driver, like a few Marvell boxes. Let me look at the kernel config again. But is power off is working?

shutdown -h now
or
poweroff

Let's take inventory of the 4 USB ports and the internal MMC. Please post whatever you think should be regarding these ports.

Also, the old logs seem to suggest mmc needs the sdhci/sdhci-pxa/sdhci-pltfm modules, are those already compiled into the kernel as well?

Yes, part of it. sdhci-pltfm only exists in old kernel. I'll build tld-2.5.

bodhi,

shutdown/poweroff/reboot all halt the system - it unmounts filesystems, stops running processes, etc. - but it doesn't cut power to the system or reboot the system from wloader, I think it's related to the power button not working but that's just a guess.

These are the only dell kernel logs that look to be directly related to the onboard flash:

Also I think I was too quick to say the rtc was working, I was getting the right time before but now I think that was due to ntp updating the system clock; it may be writing the correct time on system halt but it doesn't seem to be reading it correctly on boot.

Right! RTC in the kernel boot log.

A lot of NAS boxes just shutdown, but low power is still on. So hard to say. If Power LED is on, then it is just that we have not turned it off correctly.

bodhi,

I reread my boot logs to figure out what was happening with usb; hub 1 is apparently the available usb ports, I don't know what hub 2 is for as nothing seems to be on it, hub 3 holds the ethernet port and an "ultra fast media reader" which I'm assuming is the onboard flash otherwise I have no idea what it could be.

I poked around the t50 dts file to see if there might be anything that might help bringing up onboard flash/rtc, I didn't find anything for that but maybe this will help make the power button work here too?

gpio-poweroff {
	compatible = "gpio-poweroff";
	pinctrl-0 = <&pmx_gpio_8>;
	pinctrl-names = "default";
	gpios = <&gpio0 8 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;
};

For the benefit of future people who find this thread, don't mount the fat partition with wloader.conf to /boot as dpkg will fail and it's never getting fixed:

Is the system frozen here? if not, please post the entire dmesg.

Perhpaps not. T50 is really a very different box, which is Dove arch, and this box is MMP3. Some boards have GPIO Poweroff, some don't (and use serial to send command to the microcontroller). I think if GPIO Poweroff were supported, it would have been already in the dell-ariel DTS.

Right. There should be only the mounted rootfs when you install kernel. That will tell dpkg to populate the folder /boot in the rootfs. A different /boot on another drive is a really old setup. So after you install the kernel and create uImage and uInitrd, copy these files over to the FAT drive where wloader expected.

This is interesting. In the DTS,

&twsi4 {
        status = "okay";

        embedded-controller@58 {
                compatible = "dell,wyse-ariel-ec", "ene,kb3930";
                reg = <0x58>;
                system-power-controller;

                off-gpios = <&gpio 126 GPIO_ACTIVE_HIGH>,
                            <&gpio 127 GPIO_ACTIVE_HIGH>;
        };
};

According to the above, the Power button should work.

bodhi,

That's the end of dmesg, everything else is about bringing up file systems/ethernet that I only get over serial.

I don't think we need hsic1 in the dtb, the ethernet/mmc look like they're both on hsic0.

Looking back at the mainline dts file for the board, are the kb3930/kb3930-input modules in the kernel as well? They may be the modules we need to get the power button working.

I don't know if this is related or not but I replaced my dead rtc battery and rtc still doesn't work but my mmc shows up now:
[    4.717294][  T134] mmc0: SDHCI controller on d4281000.mmc [d4281000.mmc] using ADMA

[    5.595715][ T1113] mmcblk0rpmb: mmc0:0001 H4G1d 4.00 MiB, chardev (243:0)

I can't mount any of the partitions, but it's a start.

Forget the thing I said about mmc working, I rebooted to make sure it wasn't a fluke and it went back to complaining about mmc0 stuck being busy - on the one hand I think this means we have all the modules we need to bring up all the major parts of the system, on the other hand I think I might need to take my system apart to see if I have physical issues.

bodhi,

Instead of constantly blinking my power light is a solid green and reboot/poweroff commands are working; pressing the power button does not trigger a poweroff but that may be a gui-only thing and I'm fine if it's missing:

The logs say we're picking up two rtcs now, but even when the system says the rtc has been set when I reboot the system it reverts back to epoch time; it may be an issue with my hardware but I don't know why since I just replaced the rtc battery:
Saving the system clock to /dev/rtc0.

I'm starting to think my issue with mmc is also a harware problem, sometimes the kernel can recognize it (but I still can't access the partitions), sometimes it's stuck being busy, but I don't get how it could be a hardware issue but it can boot into thinos every time I want without issue.

Like I said before, I don't think hsic1 is necessary in the dts and we can get rid of it without issue.

Yes, I think you'll need to monitor the key event and see if the Power button triggers. And use esekeyd to run shutdown from the power key event.

The last one written by Trond is a pretty good tutorial. But you don't need to do all that if the Power button jusrt performs a simple shutdown.

I think it is not fully working yet. The read still failed when kernel booting up.

I think there is still something we don't know about that eMMC. Because it was initialized OK initially (showing 4GB capacity). So the definition in the DTS is correct (mmc3). Perhaps I'm missing a module.

OK.

Here is kernel linux-6.2.8-mvebu-tld-2.7.

This has more MMC changes: make MMC builtin modules, and use 200Mhz frequency for this eMMC chip (maximum allowed).

bodhi,

It looks like more of the same - two rtcs which never seem to pull the right time on boot and wonky onboard storage. I'm coming back around to there being a hardware mmc problem since if I leave the computer unplugged for a while it'll show up on boot, but when I reboot I get the error about the mmc being busy. At least disabling hsic1 didn't cause something to not come up.

OK. I think perhaps you should try running this box with the case open, in case we are seeing the overheating problem. If the chip is too hot to touch, then I'm leaning to that. Maybe using a fan to blow air directly to the board? We don't know if stock kernel slow down the CPU frequency or not, and the GPU is usually working very hard during boot, too.

Looking closely at the mainline DTS, I think I've covered all the necessary modules for the mmc3 device. There is no regulator defined for mmc in the DTS, so I don't think we missed anything.

Perhaps I need to look at the cpu-freq governor area.

Mischif,

Hold on! I'm seeing there are recent commits on this code in Linux source tree. Looks like they are directly related to this polling problem, too.

Let's see if I can find out more if we need to try a later stable kernel to pick up those patches.

Looks like that commit should be in 6.2.12 stable.

UPDATE: not in 6.2.12.

bodhi,

The 3020 is a fanless sbc so I doubt overheating is the problem; I've been running with the top off to access the uart and the couple times I've touched the heat sink it wasn't that much hotter than ambient.

Attempting to mount the partitions when they're recognized fails, I don't know if that's because the mmc only works long enough to be recognized or because the kernel can't figure out what filesystem the partitions actually are:
root@debian:~# mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/
mount: /mnt: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mmcblk0p1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.

Looking at the latest patches for MMC in mainline kernel, I have high hope. It seems to be a common problem. So let's wait for it to get merged in the stable tree and we'll go again.

Here is kernel linux-6.3.0-mvebu-tld-0.1.

I'm transitioning the MVEBU kernel to the 6.3.x-tld-0.x to include MMP3 arch.

Kernel 6.3.x has the latest MMC patch that hopfully will solve the "SD card busy polling" problem.

bodhi,

No luck, still getting mmc polling errors and the power light went back to flashing again, did you patch the dts in this release?

I will double-check with the old dell kernel to see if I could recognize the mmc there as well but I'm really coming around to the idea my thin client might have problems; if you wanted to check for yourself these go for ~25 dollars on ebay.

I might have missed some config when merging the kernel 6.2.8-mvebu-tld-2.7 to this. The DTS patch is the same.

Yes, just received my box, but I have not got time to open it yet.

bodhi,

It's good to know we'll have a second opinion on how well the kernels work. In case production dates lead to different results mine has model number Tx0D with a production date of 12/2014; I assume yours has twin DVI ports on the back as well.

If it doesn't have twin DVI ports then it isn't a Dell Wyse 3020 it is more likely a Dell Wyse 3010.
