Debian on ReadyNas RN2120

Hi,

I have just obtained a RN2120 which is a 1U rack system with a dual core armada XP. I see a few references to working debian systems with this model, but nothing explicit on how to actually achieve it. Does anyone have any pointers on where to start?

Many thanks!

spiderdijon,

Yes, this box is supported in mainline Linux. So I'd expect it can be supported here easily (if the u-boot used in this box is a bit newish).

Let me write a summary of steps to get it to boot Debian in the next post.

Booting the MVEBU (Armada 37x, 38x, and XP) boards with stock u-boot.

1. Create the Debian rootfs on a USB stick, using the tarball Debian-6.6.2-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 (16 Dec 2023) from the Linux Kernel MVEBU package and Debian armhf rootfs release thread. Or use whichever the latest rootfs in the release thread.

In rootfs installation Step 3, the DTB you need to use must be for the box you are installing. For example, the RN2120 box DTB file is armada-xp-netgear-rn2120.dtb.

2. Connect serial console. See here for some suggestion what to buy if it is the first time you do this.

3. Attach the new USB rootfs. Power up the box. Interrupt u-boot at the countdown and,
help
bdinfo
printenv
usb start
And then if the USB drive was initialized OK (by usb start),
usb part
ext2ls usb 0:1 /boot

Warning: do not execute saveenv or resetenv at the u-boot prompt. During testing we want the envs to be original so we can reset the box to the original state where stock OS can be booted.

4. Post the entire serial console log here. Base on what the output looks like, I will post commands to modify u-boot envs (temporarily) to boot into Debian on USB. Note that the setenv commands are transient (see Step 6 below for reseting the box at anytime during testing).

Here are the setenv commands for the Netgear RN2120. Copy and paste each command to the u-boot prompt.

setenv bootdev usb
setenv device 0:1
setenv load_image_addr 0x02000000
setenv load_initrd_addr 0x3000000
setenv load_image 'echo loading uImage ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_image_addr /boot/uImage'
setenv load_initrd 'echo loading uInitrd ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_initrd_addr /boot/uInitrd'
setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs "console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial"'
setenv bootcmd_exec 'echo Booting Debian from $bootdev; setenv fdt_skip_update yes; setenv initrd_high 0xffffffff; run load_image; run load_initrd; bootm $load_image_addr $load_initrd_addr'
setenv bootcmd_custom_usb 'usb start; run set_bootargs; run bootcmd_exec'
setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_custom_usb'
and then try booting
boot

5. Observe serial console. Whether it boots successfully to the Debian prompt or not, please post the entire serial console log here. Entire log (from the u-boot banner) will be needed for troubleshooting, and for verification that everything works in the kernel.

6. Reset the box to boot stock OS

At anytime when you want to abandon the testing session and boot back to stock OS,
usb stop
and then turn off the power and remove the USB stick. And then power on to boot into stock FW.

That looks promising. It might take a few tries to get it to boot successfully but should be easy.

I'll write the Steps in a separate post.

That bad. It did not survive the decompression.

Let's try this before we go back to stock booting scheme.

Repeat the same setenvs, but with this bootcmd_exec (replace setenv initrd_high 0xffffffff with printenv)

setenv bootcmd_exec 'echo Booting Debian from $bootdev; setenv fdt_skip_update yes; printenv; run load_image; run load_initrd; bootm $load_image_addr $load_initrd_addr'

@spiderdijon,

Ah OK. I did not notice that this box has a much older u-boot for Armada XP and Armada 370.

Are you familiar with chroot? you need to install the other kernel on top of the current basic rootfs Debian-6.6.2-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.

This is the kernel that should be used for this box.

GTI Mirabox and Netgear RN120/RN104 (Armada 370) Installation & Kernel Upgrade (Linux-6.5.7)
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,92514

You can also use use the zImage from kernel linux-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1 to boot temporarily into Debian, and then install the full kernel.

Let me know if the above made sense. Please ask question if you are not sure.

Thanks for your response. It makes some sense but I'm not entirely sure. This is my understanding:

1. recreate the bootable usb drive but with the different kernel you specified above
2. using the same setenv commands above, boot the usb drive
3. Once booted temporarily into debian, install the full kernel (or should this be rootfs which would make sense with chroot?)

Actually yes it seems I'm quite unclear on how to proceed :)
Re: Debian on ReadyNas RN2120
February 26, 2024 08:13PM
spiderdijon,

1. Recreate the bootable usb drive but with the different kernel

Yes. On another Linux host, you can chroot into the USB rootfs (you already created) to install new full kernel linux-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1. And then use the same setenv commands above, boot the usb drive.

Or use the alternative where you don't use chroot to install:

2. You can also boot kernel linux-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1 temporarily using its zImage

- Mount the already created USB rootfs (with Debian-6.6.2-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2) on another Linux host. Assuming it is mounted at /media/sdb1.
- Download kernel linux-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2 tarball to a new folder /media/sdb1/boot/kernel. And extract it.

cd /media/sdb1/boot/kernel
tar xf linux-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2

- And then create a new uImage with kernel zImage-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1.

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a ./kernel/zImage-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/armada-xp-netgear-rn2120.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage

- And umount remove the USB rootfs. Bring it to the RN2120. And boot with the same setenvs commands above.

Once you boot into Debian, you can proceed to install full kernel as described in the release thread.

Installation

NOTE: the following steps are for a general kernel upgrade. For 1st time installation, please see Initial Installation (scroll down to 06 Sept 2020 section)

1. Backup your current zImage, uImage, and uInitrd. In the /boot directory, these are files for your current kernel (xx.xx.xx is the version number):
uInitrd
uImage
zImage-xx.xx.xx-mvebu-370xp-xxx
initrd.img-xx.xx.xx-mvebu-370xp-xxx
System.map-xx.xx.xx-mvebu-370xp-xxx
vmlinuz-xx.xx.xx-mvebu-370xp-xxx
config-xx.xx.xx-mvebu-370xp-xxx

2. Extract the kernel and the DTB files in the archive:

cd /boot
tar -xjf linux-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2
tar -xf linux-dtb-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1.tar

3. And install it with dpkg. Remove flash-kernel first to avoid potential problem:

cd /boot
apt-get remove flash-kernel
dpkg -i linux-image-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1_1_armhf.deb

4. Create uImage and uInitrd (kernel file initrd.img-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1 was generated by dpkg in step 3).

(I'm using the Mirabox armada-370-mirabox.dtb here in the instruction. Please replace DTB name with armada-370-netgear-rn102.dtb or armada-370-netgear-rn104.dtb if you are upgrading the Netgear RN102 or RN104 box).

cd /boot
cp -a uImage uImage.bak
cp -a uInitrd uInitrd.bak
cp -a zImage-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/armada-370-mirabox.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -a 0x00000000 -e 0x00000000 -n initramfs-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1 -d initrd.img-6.5.7-mvebu-370xp-tld-1 uInitrd

5. The new uImage and uInitrd files should be created in /boot directory now. You're ready to reboot the system:
sync
sync
sync
shutdown -r now

It is interesting to note that the RN2120 has a dual core CPU but seemingly only one core is being detected?

Also interesting is the large wait for a PCI device when booting:

[ 4.511341][ T1] pci 0000:00:01.0: not ready after 2047ms; waiting

[ 68.991349][ T1] pci 0000:00:01.0: not ready after 65535ms; giving up

Actually looking at how low that device is in the PCI root...could that be the second core?

I assume there should be a way to make the setenv commands permanent? It would also be interesting to know if you know how to allow the second core to be used.

Cool!

It sounds like you've used option number 2 (boot new kernel temporarily)?

The issue is: to improve performance for the Mirabox, and RN102/104, I've configured this kernel as a single core (i.e. non-SMP). That's why you are seeing only 1 core.

I would need to put SMP back in this kernel to accomodate this box. I think that would be reasonable, unless there is real performance degradation for the Netgear RN102/104 (I don't care much about the Mirabox, it only good to be used as a test bed for this kernel).

So I will release another version with SMP. And let you install it. And Trond (tme) to test it to see if we can live with SMP kernel on Netgear RN102/104.

> I assume there should be a way to make the setenv

Yes. After you test boot a few times, you can save the envs. However, we need to test it to be sure that it won't corrupt the envs by saving. We don't know much about this u-boot version yet so must be careful.

1. Run kwboot to boot this box with another Armada XP u-boot. I had built a version here before I have to find it. Or I can rebuild it and let you try. As long as it can boot to the u-boot count down, then we have a rescue path.

2. If that does not work. We need to make the mtds and u-boot envs accessible in Debian. This is a task to complete for this box any way.

While in Debian , we can dump u-boot image from flash. And use it in kwboot.

3. Once kwboot is working, you can proceed to test saving the envs. If all goes well, the box will automatically boot to USB rootfs.

I'm actually having great difficulty in getting kwboot to work. I have tried several systems including a raspberry pi and it never gets past a few percent:

Rpi using usb serial dongle
root@poepi:/home/pi# root@poepi:/home/pi# kwboot -b uboot.2024.04-rc3-tld-1.ds414.kwb -t /dev/ttyUSB0 -p
kwboot version 2023.01
Patching image boot signature to UART
Aligning image header to Xmodem block size
Sending boot message. Please reboot the target...|
Sending boot image header (86272 bytes)...
  0 % [......................................................................]
 10 % [................................E
xmodem: Protocol error
Rpi using its internal UART:
root@poepi:/home/pi# kwboot -b uboot.2024.04-rc3-tld-1.ds414.kwb -t /dev/serial0 -p -B 115200
kwboot version 2023.01
Patching image boot signature to UART
Aligning image header to Xmodem block size
Sending boot message. Please reboot the target.../
Sending boot image header (86272 bytes)...
  0 % [+++++++++++

xmodem: Input/output error

On a x86 linux machine I get a similar problem but with a different message:
xmodem: Bad message

I should note that both the rpi serial port and the usb serial dongle on all systems can receive the uboot console prints when the rn2120 boots normally.

I have also tried lower and higher baud rates with much the same outcome.

I have tried setting the -a flag for amarda XP timings but then it never seems to even start. Do you have any pointers on what to set -q -s -o to if anything?

I've read a few threads relating to kwboot. Possibly I might be having a issue because I'm starting kwboot first and then powering on the NAS? Is there a suggested sequence?

That option -a was tested extensively, so -q -s probably will not be much help. And yes, option -a should be used.

No, that's only applicable to the initial handshake. Here you have gone past that, and kwboot already started transfering data.

I should note that both the rpi serial port and the usb serial dongle on all systems can receive the uboot console prints when the rn2120 boots normally.

The fact that you can interrupted u-boot count down and boot into Debian proved the serial console works. However, different protocols are use in a normal serial console (i.e. with minicom/picocom/screen) and kwboot. xmodem is a bit more fragile.

Try these:

- Make sure that the serial wires are away from any power source. Sometime the interference can cause noise that messes up the xmodem protocol.
- When seeing "xmodem: Protocol error", up arrow to recall the kwboot command and execute again immediately. Try this as many times as you can.

=====

As I recalled there were more works done for kwboot during the last year. The last maintainer is a very smart guy. I'll build the latest kwboot ARM version to see if it will help.

Set up MTD partitions and u-boot envs for Debian

Recap. The current setenvs to boot Debian
Marvell>> setenv bootdev usb
Marvell>> setenv device 0:1
Marvell>> setenv load_image_addr 0x02000000
Marvell>> setenv load_initrd_addr 0x3000000
Marvell>> setenv load_image 'echo loading uImage ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_image_addr /boot/uImage'
Marvell>> setenv load_initrd 'echo loading uInitrd ...; ext2load $bootdev $device $load_initrd_addr /boot/uInitrd'
Marvell>> setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs "console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial"'
Marvell>> setenv bootcmd_exec 'echo Booting Debian from $bootdev; setenv fdt_skip_update yes; setenv initrd_high 0xffffffff; run load_image; run load_initrd; bootm $load_image_addr $load_initrd_addr'
Marvell>> setenv bootcmd_custom_usb 'usb start; run set_bootargs; run bootcmd_exec'
Marvell>> setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_custom_usb'

Add mtdparts and modify set_bootargs commands:
setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=pxa3xx_nand-0:0x180000@0(u-boot),0x20000@0x180000(u-boot-env),0x600000@0x200000(uImage),0x400000@0x800000(minirootfs),-(ubifs)'
setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs "console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial"'

And then boot
boot

Log in to Debian, check the mdts
cat /proc/mtd
and then edit /etc/fw_env.config file. Its content should be as followed:

nano /etc/fw_env.config
# MTD device name	Device offset	Env. size	Flash sector size Number of sectors
/dev/mtd1 0x0 0x20000 0x20000
And get the listing of the envs
fw_printenv

Please post the serial log here.

If everything goes well, we can dump mtd0 and use the image for kwboot. More about this in a separate post.

Re: Debian on ReadyNas RN2120

I'm having difficulty executing the binary on the pi. I think it's due to an incompatible glibc. Could you link the repo where the kwboot development work is going on so I can compile it from source?

Edit: I think I found it: https://source.denx.de/u-boot/u-boot/ (?) but now having difficulty in producing a kwboot binary. It doesn't seem to build it with the "make tools-only"?

Many thanks!

Just to be sure the /.etc/fw_env.config file had a number 4 under "Number of sectors". In your post it is blank. I have blanked it in mine also.

You need to pick a board first, any ARM board is OK. For example, on rPi:
make rpi_3_defconfig
make tools

And thanks for reporting the problem running on rPi. I think I will build a static kwboot and upload it later.

It's OK. That number is optional.

Please post either the serial log or dmesg output here.

I'll wait for your static build of kwboot. Even with setting up the targets:

make rpi_4_defconfig
make tools

It still doesn't seem to build kwboot. It builds kwbimage.o but that is as far as it goes.

Try building a board
make nsa310s_defconfig
make
And then check the ./tools/ directory.

spiderdijon,

Use this static kwboot: kwboot_static_2024.04-rc3

Thanks - The static linked binary works but the result is the same:

I don't think the baud rate option is doing anything as 9600 takes the same amount of time as 115200.

spiderdijon,

Let's be productive and do other tasks first.

Here is the new SMP kernel. Please install and verify that it works for 2 cores.
