Its seems something is broken with the Debian installer

...
# Starting debootstrap installation
I: Retrieving Release
I: Retrieving Packages
I: Validating Packages
W: http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/main/binary-armel/Packages.gz was corrupt
I: Retrieving Packages
E: Couldn't download dists/squeeze/main/binary-armel/Packages
debootstrap failed.
See /tmp/debian/debootstrap/debootstrap.log for more information.

the log shows:

Have you tried logging into your DockStar and using wget to retrieve the file manually? The problem may be a simple connectivity issue.

I tried to download the file manually (using my browser) it was fine so it's definitely not the debian site itself causing the problems and this script has worked lots of times before (not that that proves there are no bugs but something major like this probably would have been spotted already if it were caused by the script).

Hi,

I'm having the same problem with the installer using a POGOPLUG

"# Starting debootstrap installation
I: Retrieving Release
I: Retrieving Packages
I: Validating Packages
W: http://cdn.debian.net/debian/dists/squeeze/main/binary-armel/Packages.gz was corrupt
I: Retrieving Packages
E: Couldn't download dists/squeeze/main/binary-armel/Packages
debootstrap failed.
See /tmp/debian/debootstrap/debootstrap.log for more information.
-bash-3.2# cat /tmp/debian/debootstrap/debootstrap.log
Connecting to cdn.debian.net (128.226.116.176:80)
debootstrap.invalid_ 100% |*******************************| 89926 00:00:00 ETA
Connecting to cdn.debian.net (128.59.59.71:80)
debootstrap.invalid_ 100% |*******************************| 8275k 00:00:00 ETA
Connecting to cdn.debian.net (128.226.116.176:80)
wget: server returned error: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found
-bash-3.2# "

Whatever file it's trying to get seems to have a weird name "debootstrap.invalid_"???

I guess this is failing verification.

Any ideas?

Hey guys. I think I can help with this one.

So basically (if Im understanding correctly, which I might not because frankly the 80s were good to me), during the debian install script it sends you out to cdn.debian.net to get your stuff.

Cdn.debian.net will then send you to some other mirror. The problem is that not every mirror out there has all the packages we need, and some of them have corrupt packages, etc.

That 404 error is a "file not found" error so it looks like the mirror to which you got send does not have the file you need.

We can fix that.

So what worked for me was this:

Using vi, (here's some instructions since its not intuitive) go in and edit the DEB_MIRROR line on the script.
Put a # in front of the current line so it reads #DEB_MIRROR "http://cdn.debian.net/debian"; and underneath put in there DEB_MIRROR="http://punk.uchicago.edu/debian";

Once you do that, it'll send you to the uchicago.edu mirror when you run the debian install from that script, and I have found that mirror to be complete (with one minor exception you won't find until you start installing other stuff later on) and fast.

Hopefully this gets you fixed up and running!

Punk's a good one and my primary mirror. It's also fairly central to the US as far as backbones are concerned... so may end up being better for those who have issues with the Canadian round robin.

Doesn't work for me DEB_MIRROR="http://punk.uchicago.edu/debian";;
