Debian on Linksys EA4500 / EA4200
March 21, 2016 08:32AM
I've recently come into possession of a Linksys EA4500 router. It's currently running OpenWRT (since it makes the most sense for a router) but I'm very curious about the possibility of running Debian on it.
It has been covered here: http://www.wolfteck.com/projects/candyhouse/

  1. How viable would it be to update the u-boot as we do with the other platforms? e.g. Dockstar (I have 2 of these) The Debian image currently provided relies on flashing uImage to flash and having the rootfs on USB. It would be nice for the device to boot into OpenWRT if there's no USB, or Debian if USB is present (with uImage residing in /boot)
  2. Assuming there's mainline support for the hardware, I imagine one could just use bohdi's rootfs as long as there's a suitable .dtb for the board?
Would this be worth the effort? I feel like most of the hard work has already been done...

Michael

Hi do you mean this processor?

SoC Marvell Feroceon 88F6282 @1200Mhz
Ram 128MiB
Flash 128MiB
Network 4 + 1
USB 1
Serial 1
JTag 1

https://origin-www.marvell.com/embedded-processors/kirkwood/assets/88f6282-3_pb.pdf

http://www.datasheetlib.com/datasheet/1436802/88f6282_marvell-technology-group.html

https://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/hardware/soc/soc.marvell

Thats a different processor to the other kirkwoods on here which are typically 88F6281

Im sure bodhi will be along shortly and ask for the output of the following to see what support he can offer (he seems to relish a challenge!)

So if you can help him and provide the following

Full bootlog :
Uboot variables

:) the 6182 is OK. It's in the same family so we might be able to pick one that is close to it and see how it goes.

@Michael, serial bootlog and printenv in serial console.

EA4500 running Debian would be awesome. I am afraid however, getting all the built in networking devices to operate and cooperate may be a struggle. At least that's been my experience with Guruplug and Dreamplug. Libertas based firmware devices suck.

following this.

It would be cool to get Debian on a proper router too.

Anybody has a spec for this?

openwrt runs on it, they claim "full support" although 5Ghz channel selection is limited. see here for full specs https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/linksys/ea4500

you can probably get the dtb from them.

bodhi, this guy looks like your kind of hacker :) Hacking the "Candyhouse"

Impressive resume too...........

Regarding Debian / Openwrt, it looks like both have already been figured out. I wonder if "bodavian" would make it better?

Thanks tor the link! Very intersting info that I meant to look for but never get around to do it.

That's impressive, alright, he can fix up old car AND hack Linux :)

Thanks. This is a very good box (no SATA but 4 Gbit ports).

Plentiful used supply and cheap now because of age. Looks like you could pick one up for less than $30 shipped. Even with 128MB RAM, would still make a good Debian device but I wonder how all the pieces would work together for hostapd, iptables and such to get routing and AP functions working. Then again, you might be better off using OpenWrt for this function.

Well, openwrt is using the same software every other distro is using already, they aren't Cisco's IOS.

Tutorials about turning a x86 box into a firewall/router are abundant, and due to the wonders of opensource, we can use them to configure ARM/MIPS/whatever boxes too.

http://www.tecmint.com/setup-linux-as-router/
https://wiki.debian.org/green/Router
http://blog.noviantech.com/2010/12/22/debian-router-gateway-in-15-minutes/

As long as the hardware works decently, the software side is fine.

The problem you can run into is a wireless network device works fine as a client but doesn't work as a host because of driver issues. At least that's been my experience and observation.

+1 for bobbafetthotmail's comments. I have turned allsorts into a router/server that way.

as for bodhi's-debian (bodadovian) - i have been using it since 3.16 for traffic routing and shaping, only thing i can see that *may* be a cause for nuisance would be the hostapd package and its support for the chip / the kernel support for the attached switch chip.

Re: Linksys EA4500 / EA4200 support

Wow. I'm quite encouraged by the responses here :)

  • The guy from wolfteck HAS gotten Debian to run, however he abandoned the project as soon as OpenWRT gained some traction. There was also limited hardware support and could not co-exist with a loadable image on flash (from what I understand - uImage was on flash and rootfs on USB)
  • OpenWRT does support the device now fully, including both radios and the switch with VLAN support. This bodes well for support within Debian

So long as the device works in Debian and all of the hardware is recognised and operational, it becomes a software/configuration issue and the work here is done. That's where I'd like to end up (as well as having OpenWRT on flash and Debian on USB)
I'm busy adding serial port headers and I'll respond to this thread in a few minutes with the requested info when I have it.

the switch should be supported https://lwn.net/Articles/611998/

the big unknown is how good are the wifi drivers for it now.

See this thread: QiZhiTong 501mv2. Might be useful for EA4500 as they appear to be similar devices.
Re: Linksys EA4500 / EA4200 support
March 24, 2016 10:50AM
Just for fun I tried this. The USB contains the rootfs for my Dockstar (and I added the .dtb for this device, but I don't know whether u-boot supports it or how to load it. No, I don't really know what I'm doing ;) )

EDIT: I stole the .dtb from OpenWRT bins somewhere and stuck it in the kernel image using 4b here

It seems as though it tries to boot before the USB drive has enumerated properly and so it has no root fs. Is there anything I can do to make it wait? Or am I completely wrong?

I would try to boot off embedded sheevaplug dtb and see if that gets you further. It seems like the most generic.
Re: Linksys EA4500 / EA4200 support

Also, you could try these env's but don't do a saveev. Simply repower if it hangs.

setenv bootargs_usb 'console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10'
setenv load_usb 'usb start; ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0:1 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'setenv bootargs $(bootargs_usb); run load_usb; bootm 0x800000 0x1100000'
setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_usb'
boot

Re: Linksys EA4500 / EA4200 support
March 24, 2016 12:24PM
haha, you're ingenuous.

Add

rootdelay=10

in the kernel boot command line, it's the "bootargs" line that is used when you boot debian.

That tells the kernel to wait for up to 10 seconds or so for rootfs.

It's common here and needed for most usb drives, because of reasons you noticed.

EDIT: Leggo ninja'd me. Damn elves.

It works! :D
Thanks!
Setting the label did the trick. I'll try again just now with a clean rootfs and post the bootlog. I kept the .dtb that I got from OpenWRT, but I can already see that drivers are going to be an issue. Will post back soon.
Re: Linksys EA4500 / EA4200 support

That was easier than I expected...
Network is connected on LAN port 1. I was moving the cable around, hence the long time to get a lease.

Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0
Viper>> setenv bootargs_usb 'console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10'
Viper>> setenv load_usb 'usb start; ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0:1 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd'

Viper>> setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_usb'

post the .dtb, im certain Mr Bodhi, would love to look at it....
Re: Linksys EA4500 / EA4200 support

Here you go, mr bodhi :)
Re: Linksys EA4500 / EA4200 support
March 24, 2016 01:40PM
Having installed firmware-libertas and basic configuration utilities,
wlan0 is the 5GHz radio
wlan1 is the 2.4GHz radio
eth0 is all 4 of the LAN ports (it defaults to a dumb switch) and
eth1 is the WAN port.

TODO: LED and possibly some kind of control over the switch, but otherwise it all works quite nicely.

The stock u-boot doesn't seem to support the "if" command, but I'm sure it could boot to USB as a 2nd option quite easily by simply using sequential commands in bootcmd. Is it even worth updating it on the device? There's an 8pin header but I don't know whether it's JTAG or not...
Re: Linksys EA4500 / EA4200 support

You got me inquisitive, this one would be a Marvell based beast running as a Debian router. Linksys wrt1900atc. Based on SOC, very doable if you can get serial console.

most newer kirkwoods have a nice feature, they can load an u-boot over serial connection, no need to JTAG. see this thread http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,7852,7852

Can you test if your box can kwboot a sheevaplug u-boot? (must use the command line ending with -p with the images we have)

> Is it even worth updating it on the device?

While the only one that can answer here is bodhi (the one actually making it), I would rather have a nice modern u-boot than a dumb ancient one.

Because u-boot auto-finding device with its scripting capability, dtb booting, and ext4 drivers for the rootfs save me a bunch of time when making/updating things.

>You got me inquisitive, this one would be a Marvell based beast running as a Debian router. Linksys wrt1900atc. Based on SOC, very doable if you can get serial console.

that's a Marvell MV78230 Armada XP. Not a Kirkwood. I don't think there is a lot of info about it.

If you go for newer and powerful, look up Freescale's SoCs that should be more open.

Unfortunately it doesn't work with this version of u-boot

./kwboot -b /home/michael/uboot.2015.10-tld-1.sheevaplug.mtd0.kwb -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0
Sending boot message. Please reboot the target...|
Sending boot image...
xmodem: Bad message

It also seems to be ignoring bootcmd. I first changed it to boot from USB followed by flash, then removed the section about flash altogether but it still boots from flash. Not sure what the entry point is if not bootcmd...
