GoFlex Net vs DockStar.

I see the memory is the same, 128MB, but is the IO any faster via the sata connections vs USB?

Can some person with a GoFlex Net and drive try this:

Dec 2010 on USB, 40GB SATA, drive:

root@debian:/etc# hdparm -tT /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 576 MB in 2.01 seconds = 287.25 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 86 MB in 3.08 seconds = 27.89 MB/sec

Above is via USB, we need to have the numbers when the drive is connected via sata.

Thanks.

Hi,
perhabs you read my posts regarding the GoFlex Net. I've bricked mine!

Maybe you can answer a few questions about the GoFlex Net:

1. Using Jeff's method should give me a message at the beginning to choose the GoFlex net?! I haven't got such a message! Is it possible, that the reason for that is that I've registered my GoFlex Net at seagate and an update was made?
2. Installing failed but the u-boot was modified so that I can start from USB and this works.
3. Booting from NAND don't work, only blinking orange LED.
4. I can't see a connected GoFlex 1 TB drive from debian, does'nt Jeff's method support eSata? Are drives in the GoFlex Net attached by eSata?

I think it's very important to get a working solution for GoFlex Net, because DockStar is a discontiniued model.

Greetings,
Thomas

I'm planning to do exactly this:

- installing to sata on a goflex-net
- which has been registered.

Any new experiences? My objective would be a reasonably complete debian on the sata disk (a 2.5" HDD)

Hi Marco,
I have no news! One thing for you to think about: If you install Debian on the GoFlex HD, you can't spinn down this HD, I think. So maybe it's better to install Debian on an USB-Stick and store data on the Disk! Right now I think that supporting SATA is a feature which must be enabled on the bootloader U-Boot. Maybe for some reasons I've installed the wrong bootloader (from Dockstar) because I was not asked for the system I use during setup?! Maybe that's because I've updated the device from the seagate website.

Please tell me if you got some new informations.

Greetings,
Thomas

No, you can still spin it down (many laptop systems do this). It will just spin up again if you need an application or file that's not already in memory (in the buffer cache).

Can I boot Debian from one of the docked 2,5" SATA-HDDs and use the other one as DATA-storage (NAS) partition ?

I read on plugapps.com that I can't use the SATA-ports on Debian

I think I just did the exact same thing. I registered at Seagate. Then I ran Jeffs script from http://jeff.doozan.com/debian/ and everything seemed to run fine. But after booting, it keeps flashing orange.

Should the script have asked about Goflex Net during the install? It did not.

Any input what to do now? Other than returning the box :-)

Ok, first thing first:

All data below with a custom kernel booted from USB.
/dev/sda: (Freeagent Go, 250GB, USB):
Timing cached reads: 266 MB in 2.01 seconds = 132.65 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 60 MB in 3.12 seconds = 19.25 MB/sec
dd if=/dev/zero of=/out.raw bs=1024 count=1024000
1048576000 Bytes (1,0 GB) kopiert, 36,5192 s, 28,7 MB/s
dd if=/out.raw of=/dev/null bs=1024 count=1024000
1048576000 Bytes (1,0 GB) kopiert, 74,7849 s, 14,0 MB/s

/dev/sdb: (Seagate Momentus 5400.2, 80GB, SATA)
Timing cached reads: 212 MB in 2.00 seconds = 105.86 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 106 MB in 3.01 seconds = 35.23 MB/sec
root@debian:/# dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/sdb1/out.raw bs=1024 count=1024000
1048576000 Bytes (1,0 GB) kopiert, 55,2531 s, 19,0 MB/s
root@debian:/# dd if=/mnt/sdb1/out.raw of=/dev/null bs=1024 count=1024000
1048576000 Bytes (1,0 GB) kopiert, 68,6688 s, 15,3 MB/s

There is a script to install a new bootloader that has support for the GoFlex net but I am not sure if it is called during the debian install. After installing the new bootloader I was no able to boot into the Pogoplug installation anymore as the chainloading of the old bootloader from the nand does not work anymore. If I chainload a Dockstar bootload I can at least boot into Pogoplug. Otherwise I am just using the USB attached debian or nothing.

To boot into debian installed on a SATA disk you need two things: a SATA aware uboot and a kernel with compiled in SATA drivers. See PlugApps:Goflex Net custom u-boot and kernel. Whatever you do with the bootloader, make sure you have a serial cable at hand...

My goal is to build a small "DSL-LAN/WLan-Router-NAS" with a debian running from NAND and data from two 1TB drives on SATA.

Agree... I have goflex net ready to install debian on usb stick or sata hdd doesn't matter,
but i'm worry to brick it, since no clear/simple instruction,,, and i do searching on google
and this forum on how to do it but cannot find a simple/clear how to...
