Thanks ottok,

I've corrected the sums. It was a copy/paste error from the Kirkwood kernel post :)

I have updated the first post to note the issue of booting the NAS326 with rootfs on HDD.

Updated 21 Nov 2017:

Zyxel NAS326 HDD booting issue

Note: you don't have to worry about this issue if you are booting with USB rootfs.

Here is what I found from reading the GPL source to trouble shoot the issue of booting the NAS326 with 2 HDDs, with the rootfs is on one HDD.

NAS326 stock u-boot uses an old AHCI driver. This old version set the link detection timeou to a very small value of 4 ms. This interval is apparently too small. In the latest version of this AHCI driver, it is set to 200 ms.

Since I have not started building new u-boot (because of UART booting issue with this box), we cannot update this u-boot, or replace it with a better one.

So at the moment, we can only work around it.

I will do some testing to see if we can pick a good work around to enable the SATA link up before we try to initialize the SATA port for booting the kernel on HDD.

Update:

- Here is a work around that seems to do the trick consistently for me and heiko: Whenever the box needs to be rebooted, just shutdown and power up again. Then both HDDs will be initialized OK.

The mentioned patch for "mvneta" seems to be in mainline now:

commit a59e386c4f4fce346161c0a62a5e1fbc1f435d6f
Author: Simon Guinot <simon.guinot@sequanux.org>
Date:   Mon Nov 13 16:27:02 2017 +0100

    net: mvneta: fix handling of the Tx descriptor counter

    commit 0d63785c6b94b5d2f095f90755825f90eea791f5 upstream.

    The mvneta controller provides a 8-bit register to update the pending
    Tx descriptor counter. Then, a maximum of 255 Tx descriptors can be
    added at once. In the current code the mvneta_txq_pend_desc_add function
    assumes the caller takes care of this limit. But it is not the case. In
    some situations (xmit_more flag), more than 255 descriptors are added.
    When this happens, the Tx descriptor counter register is updated with a
    wrong value, which breaks the whole Tx queue management.

    This patch fixes the issue by allowing the mvneta_txq_pend_desc_add
    function to process more than 255 Tx descriptors.

    Fixes: 2a90f7e1d5d0 ("net: mvneta: add xmit_more support")

An important reminder: this MVEBU series is affected by the Spectre bug.

So be careful until I can release new kernel:

Looks like the Spectre patch will be slow coming. So in the mean time, take the usual precaution.

The EX2100 NAND partition layout is wrong. Please see attached file for the correct one.

I hope that the network issues with unpatched kernel 4.16 were fixed ...

[Edit]

the values were taken from the EX4100 firmware SDK
no network issues but now NAND issues ...

[    5.211797] marvell-nfc f10d0000.flash: too many NAND chips: 8 (max = 4 CS)
[    5.218816] marvell-nfc: probe of f10d0000.flash failed with error -22

seems that this is caused by a "fix", see snipped from the 4.16 changelog

Thanks pengu!

However, regarding mtd layout you know that we don't care much about the layout in the DTS if we pass the mtdparts in the kernel bootargs. Have you tried to do that?

@pengu,

The chip select in the DTS seems OK. You are not using the latest DTB?

cat linux-4.16.7-mvebu/arch/arm/boot/dts/armada-385-wd-ex2100.dts | grep -5 num-cs
status = "okay";
			};

			flash@d0000 {
				status = "okay";
				num-cs = <1>;
				marvell,nand-keep-config;
				marvell,nand-enable-arbiter;
				nand-on-flash-bbt;
				nand-ecc-strength = <4>;
				nand-ecc-step-size = <512>;

yes .. same here except the flash partitions taken from the EX4100 firmware SDK
It's working fine in 4.14x and 4.15x kernel and perhaps 4.16 RC kernels.

I did not quite understand your response. Which is working, and which is not?

- NAND chip select
- mtd layout.

sorry for the confusion.
mtd layout is working with the provided DTB, chip select isn't working (kernel 4.16) with both.
Now, I'm running kernel 4.16.8 with the provided DTB by your patch.

Ah! that makes sense. Thanks pengu.

We have seen this chip-select problem while working on the Thecus box, and fixed the info from the reference DTS.

I'll notify hmartin to fix and test this EX2100 DTS. Unless you have a patch and would like to post the patch and the bootlog to show that you've fixed it (Please do that in a new thread).

Thanks for notifying me bodhi.

I don't have access to my EX2100 at the moment, I moved recently and it's still packed in a box... somewhere.

If someone else with an EX2100 has time to fix this, please go ahead. Otherwise I can probably work on this in a few weeks.
I've a ZyXEL NAS326. With V5.20(AAZF.1) firmware. Your procedure allowed me to boot from USB. But I could NOT boot directly from HDD. Until I changed/fixed one line in U-Boot environment.

replace:
sata_init=mw.l f1018100 20420000; mw.l f1018140 003ca800; sleep 3; scsi init

with:
sata_init=mw.l f1018100 20420000; mw.l f1018140 003ca800; sleep 3; scsi reset

It seems that "scsi init" is not a valid command. But "scsi reset" is.

Now it boots directly from HDD0, no USB needed.

Thanks for everyone's efforts. This box is fast & cheap (< $100 US on sale).

wha,

Thanks for reporting this. Probably they have've changed that in u-boot.

It would be great if you have serial console and can post the bootlog.

Thanks.
(I know, bad form, replying to my own message).

bodhi, looks like you'd already found the "scsi init" vs "scsi reset" issue, in: ZyXEL nas326 installation problem, (Nov 21, 2017 post) . Too many topics/threads to dig through! :)

Anyway, using "scsi reset", allows booting HDD from both power-up AND from "reboot" in Linux.

Thanks.

Thanks wha! I'm glad you've found the confirmation :) I forgot about it completely after many posts and exchanges on different devices in the forum for almost a year. I guess the braincells must work that way :)

Instruction regarding NAND MTDs in kernel linux-4.18.5-mvebu-tld-1.

The DTS binding for Armada NAND controller has changed since the last time I released 4.16.7, and it did effect the way we set up mtdparts. The NAND device name must be changed to reflect that.

The following u-boot env must be set correctly for the kernel to identify the NAND MTD devices.

NAS326

fw_setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=pxa3xx_nand-0:2m(u-boot),2m(env),2m(config),15m(kernel1),110m(rootfs1),15m(kernel2),-(rootfs2)'

WD EX4100 and EX2100

fw_setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=pxa3xx_nand-0:5M(u-boot),5M(kernel),5M(uRamdisk),441M(image.cfs),15M(rescue_fw),20M(config),10M(reserve1),10M(reserve2)'

Thecus N2350

fw_setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs "console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 mtdparts=pxa3xx_nand-0:-(ubifs);spi1.0:0x00400000(uboot),0x00010000@0x00100000(uboot_env),0x00010000@0x00300000(uboot_scr) earlyprintk=serial"'

Other Armada boxes

If you are running my released kernel on other Armada boxes, after installing linux-4.18.5-mvebu-tld-1, check the mtds and make sure you are still seeing them:

cat /proc/mtd
