How to disable all logging on the system? Is it possible to find out the causing processes?

Posted by Ultrazauberer
After 6 months my usb stick is bricked and so I switched to the 2.5" HDD. But now the HDD won't idle because (I think so) some processes are writing to the disk. So the disk is spinning up and down.

I deactivated the samba and the hd-idle logging. But how can I find out which processes are writing to the disk?

Thanks!
Try 'lsof /' and see what you get. Lsof lists open files and should display anything that's currently writing/logging to the disk.
Hi,
afaik there is no possibility to spin down a HDD with the rootfs on it. There are running cronjobs, processes needing frequent access to the disk and so on. In addition you probably have swap on the same disk, so there are accesses nearly all the time.
My brother spent days getting his Linkstation silent during idle... no luck so far. Now we are working on booting it from a USB stick.

As someone who has run his Dockstar with a root file system mounted on a hard drive for quite some time, I can attest that it is nearly impossible to make the system quiescent enough to allow the HD to remain spun down over the long haul. If you have any packages loaded to speak of, the disk will continually be spinning up and down. Since I've loaded asterisk on my Dockstar, the disk pretty much runs continually, which in my opinion isn't such a bad thing, really.
Ok, so is it possible to configure hd-idle for working just for 1 hdd? So I can prevent the unnecessary spin downs of the root hdd.
I didn't try it, but take a look at the parameter -a: http://hd-idle.sourceforge.net/

I tried the a parameter and changed the /etc/default/hd-idle. I added the uuid of the external hdd but hd-idle still shutting down both hdds. Any other ideas?
Did you follow the example given there?
hd-idle -i 0 -a sda -i 300 -a sdb -i 1200
This will disable the spindown by default and enable it for the specified drives, like 5min for sda and 20min for sdb.
Of course you need to restart hd-idle to make the changes take affect.

Ok, I forgot to add the other drive. I will test it. Thanks.

Hi,

It looks like someone succeeded:

Do you think that if I'm not running asteriks it would work ?

Adam.
