Remote Desktop on Dockstar?
September 13, 2010 04:19PM
I have set up a FreePBX/Asterisk voip server on Lenny. It can also be done using Squeeze but seems Lenny uses less resources. It works very well and stable as a GV-Sipgate PBX for dial out. It can be used for other voip services as well but I don't need it right now. I am also using another Dockstar as my (simple) home web server and it works fine.

Next thing I want to do is set up the Dockstar as a (graphics) desktop for remote login. I guess I will need to install VNC, X-Terminal/environment and some web browser. I don't really know much about Debian and Linux in general so I don't know where to start. Can someone give me some guides or point to where I can read to find the answers? I would really appreciate your help.

There is a post here in german: http://www.hardwareluxx.de/community/f101/der-20-server-735098.html with vnc.

But it might work with xdmcp also ?? When a display manager as gdm is installed, you just need to edit /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf and change the XDMCP section that has Enable=false to Enable=true
And from your desktop computer: X -query ip_of_yourdockstar :0 or :1 depending if you are already running an X session.

Yes it works with xdmcp.:D

I'll post some screenshots of XFCE4 on Dockstar.

a first shot because with a remote screen I was not able to make a screenshot.

What is that taking up in resources? Memory and disk space? Thanks!!

I was debating doing this and now it looks to be quite easy thanks to you both.

Want to give us a few steps on what package to install and what settings to use in order to get this working?

It will be really useful for me also. I did a quick try. I can see the desktop but cannot click on the items not very responsive. I would really appreciate to see more instructions. Thanks.

Got it working, just need to config it a bit better. Seems fast.

aptitude update
aptitude install xfce4
aptitude install xfce4-goodies

installed xming x desktop for windows.

connect with putty in X11 forwarding mode

startxfce4

then start the window manager xfme4 I think.
