NSA310 - fail installing debian - initramfs
December 13, 2018 07:47AM
Hi guys, pls I used the last uBoot (flashed via UART with kwboot-tool). Then I plugged new HDD to my PC, formated that HDD in Ubuntu to EXT3 and then extracted Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2. After this I plugged that HDD to my NSA310. Im tried almost all possible things (reinstalling uBoot, HDD reformat, ...), but Im still stuck at (initramfs) and I cant run debian.
Can sbdy help me please? Thank you a lot.

I'd guess the location of your rootfs doesn't match what your passing from uboot (root=xxxxxx). You should be able to fix your boot parameters in uboot or generate a new initramfs that handles it as is.

Looks like it's not finding the rootdevice. Since you are getting into a recovery shell you should be able to:

1. manually mount the rootfs and /boot if they are separate.
2. chroot into the rootfs
3. create appropriate /etc/fstab entries for "/"
4. generate a new initrd (update-initramfs -u)
5. package it up as uboot inird image and put in the appropriate location
Re: NSA310 - fail installing debian - initramfs
December 13, 2018 09:46AM
admittedly I'm making a few assumptions. If you post the output of "ls /sys/block", "cat /etc/fstab" from that recovery shell and the output of "printenv" from uboot I can probably be more specific.

Re: NSA310 - fail installing debian - initramfs

I should have probably mentioned that the /etc/fstab would be found inside the rootfs once you manage to mount it.

bodhi or someone familiar with these specific images might chime in with a best practice for this situation (I haven't gotten around to trying them out yet). But I've been at this point before and think I know what you need.

I'm thinking you should be able to get things working doing more or less the following:

1. mount your rootfs and then chroot into it:

mkdir /mnt/target
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/target
mount -t proc none /mnt/target/proc
mount -t sysfs none /mnt/target/sys
mount -o bind /dev /mnt/target/dev
chroot /mnt/target /bin/bash

2. modify the /etc/fstab inside the chroot by adding/modifying a line to be similar to:
UUID=5b124020-15e7-47c4-8166-cec3ab993657 / ext3 defaults 1 1

3. generate a new initrd which will set the proper root device:
update-initramfs -u

4. create the uboot image based on that new initrd
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -d /boot/initrd /boot/uInitrd

5. exit the chroot, reboot, hope all is well

All,

No, the problem is quite simple. Don't try to do too much. Let me explain it shortly.

Re: NSA310 - fail installing debian - initramfs

drakul,

Quote

Hi guys, pls I used the last uBoot (flashed via UART with kwboot-tool). Then I plugged new HDD to my PC, formated that HDD in Ubuntu to EXT3 and then extracted Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2. After this I plugged that HDD to my NSA310. Im tried almost all possible things (reinstalling uBoot, HDD reformat, ...), but Im still stuck at (initramfs) and I cant run debian.

Mount the HDD on your PC again. Assuming it is mounted at /media/sdb1.

cd /media/sdb1/boot
ls -lart

Recall the step when you extracted the rootfs. Did you append the DTB to uImage? if you did then you will see uImage.orig in the output. The original uImage must be used since you are booting with the latest u-boot. (I'm positive that you did this step, just wanted to explain why).

Quote

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Skip this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time).

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box (see the folder /media/sdb1/boot/dts for the exact spelling of your Kirkwood box name).

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

Restore the original uImage, bring the HDD back to the NSA310 and and try booting again.

cd /media/sdb1/boot
mv uImage.orig uImage
sync

Re: NSA310 - fail installing debian - initramfs
December 14, 2018 08:23AM
Maybe I got some idea. I have Ubuntu on my PC in VirtualBox. When I run terminal, I have to put "sudo" before all executions (suda tar ...., sudo mkimage ...). But when I run "sudo cat dts/kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb >> zImage.fdt " I got "You have no permission." So I had to chmod 777 zImage.fdt and then it run correctly. Well my point is: Is it possible, that I make those folders (root, boot, usr, ...) on my HDD with wrong permissions and therefore I get "mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory" ?
Thank you for answers.

drakul,

Don't worry! you just need to read the instruction carefully.

As I said above, you do not want to do step 4 when you create the rootfs:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,74784,74824#msg-74824

Quote

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

So now all you need to do is reverse step 4.

Mount the HDD on Ubuntu, Restore the original uImage, bring the HDD back to the NSA310 and and try booting again.
cd /media/sdb1/boot
mv uImage.orig uImage
sync

If you still have trouble, recreate the rootfs, and post the terminal log for the session when you create the rootfs here and I'll review it for you.
