Linux 3.3.2 kernel for Dockstar, GoFlex and many others

Update:

I did the upgrade again but this time with a memory stick image of the Squeeze install, and it was successful.

So, all is good.

My debian from stratch with 2.6.32-5 kernel and then updated to 3.3.2... arc Number the normal dockstar one.

No idea... my guess is that it may be something in the install that you did... I've literally never seen anything like that on the 2 dockstars that I have running Squeeze...

Or are you running Wheezy?

Hi, yesterday i used this kernel and the newest uBoot to let my brand new goflex net boot into debian wheezy using a deagate SATA 1TB disk! It works like a charm, so davygravy keep up the good work! This evening I was going to enable nfs-kernel-server to let the GoFlexnet act as a file server. But as the config file states: CONFIG_NFSD=m I would also like to have the modules as Benjamin states ....

Or is it a possibility that i can compile my own modules from source if no modules can be provided? Am i going to have an issue since i do not exactly know what patches are applied for the GoFlex Net, anyway .... thnx in advance!

Same here, need to compile ath9k drivers, but kernel-headers needed... Where to grab them from?

I did compile the kernel myself using kernel source from kernel.org. Extract and compile using the following procudure. ALERT!! not included are the specific kernel patches so kernel wil probably not run on target but modules and headers are available:

apt-get install build-essential
cd /usr/src/
wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/linux-3.3.2.tar.bz2
tar -xjvf linux-3.3.2.tar.bz2
cd linux-3.3.2

Download config file from initial davygravy post and rename to .config.

My first idea was, that's something wrong with the swap partition. So I unmounted it with swapoff, recreate the swap with mkswap and mount it again with swapon. The errors you see are the result of 24 hours after I'd done this.

Any idea what could be wrong here? I can't find any hint with google.

Maybe as background: Since 3 days i sync with rsync my data over internet with another server. Could the continuous transfer maybe the problem? The affacted parts in the backtrace could be a indicator.

The arcNumber is hasn't changed since flashing new uboot. But so far I understand, it is only related for led stuff, or?

Hi,

I've just updated to new uboot on my goflex home by following the manual direction given by vlad
my uboot envirroment was reseted at default

before upgrade i was using a custom kernel 2.6.38 with several modules and iscsi

so first i put by fw_setenv some vars in order boot for ide /dev/sda1

but i cannot from:
my custom kernel 2.6.38, it freeze just after 'starting kernel'
kernel 3.3 installed from this thread
in this case i do a 'kernel panic unable to mount root'
the only solution i found to boot is to use a kernel (with no initrd) from archlinux (3.1)

So is there anyone that have boot a goflex home with linux installed like this: ?
part 1 for /
part 2 for swap
part 3 for data

And could i have a 'fw_printenv' from this working goflex home ?

Where can i find the old bootloader, in order to have my original kernel and system working ?
(i havent make a copy of my original uboot because i made i manually from vlad thread)

Last question could anyone explain me the <> between uboot and ubit ?
I have not found a simple explication from the forum

Hi pemmafr,

first of all: what kind of HDD do you have? Like myself, you might have a problem with the MBR if the drive has 3TB. If so, try to start from this post.

My own uBoot-environment might not help you, because I am using a separate boot partition, but if you want to know, you can also find my environment in the GFH 3TB post I linked above (and the necessary changes should be pretty obvious to make it work with a standard root/boot partition).

I've found that my arcNumber was not to 3338 (goflex home)
so i modify it with my serial console and then i can boot my 'old custom' 2.6.38 kernel !
so the arcNumber play in my boot problem.

My drive is 1tb not 3tb

Then i tried to install from this thread (from davygravy ) "Linux 3.3.2 kernel for Dockstar, GoFlex and many others and it won't boot" on my goflex home

I will retry to download the package of this thread and install it but i thinhk this kernel+initrd don't work for
goflex boot on sata (perhaps for usb)

Hi pemmafr,

a) yes, you are right, I am using the kernel from the Zyxel et. post.

b) Yes, it can boot from SATA and you can have your pick as to whether you want SATA or USB to be tested for bootable images first. For this, you have to fiddle a bit with the uBoot environment and be absoultely sure to work with labelled partitions. If you are interested in what uBoot environment I use which works on both GoFlex flavours, have a look at my post in the thread about the 3TB GFH, where all my environment variables are printed.

Seemingly, it not only works for me but also for another poster, whom I have been in private contact with.

The 3.3.2 kernel which is linked in the first post doesn't contain support for Pogoplug devices (arcNumber 3542). But the rescue system contains a 3.3.2 kernel with support for pogoplug devices. Is a 3.3.2 kernel with support for Pogoplug devices (arcNumbers 3542 and 3960) available for download?

Shv, what do you mean by that? The only thing which is not supported (as far as I can tell) is the LED. Everything else is just fine. I can actually use the same USB-Stick for Dockstar, GoFlex Net, GoFlex Home and POGO-E02 (don't know about V4 series, as I don't (yet ...) have one of those).

I tried the kernel on Pogoplug E02 with arcNumber set to 3542 which was done by the script dockstar.debian-squeeze.sh or kirkwood.debian-wheezy.sh. It seams that this arcNumber ist not supported with this kernel and the boot procedure is stopped. It only works if I set the arcNumber to 2097.

But I am wondering that the rescue system contains a 3.3.2 kernel with support for the arcNumber 3542. I don't know why there is a difference even the kernel version is the same.

@chessplayer: Did you set the arcNumber to 2097 or 3542 or something else?

I just booted it up to check (currently, I am collecting and I hope to put all these to use at some point ...): arcNumber is 3542. I am using a separate boot partition. As I said, LED support is sub-optimal: during boot, nothing at all happens and when the POGO is up, the LED is solid orange. But I can live with that, to tell you the truth.

As you know, you can also contact me in our mother tongue via your own forum. I can send you a tarball of the stick I made, if you want.
