Goflex Home doesn't boot from sata
June 08, 2020 03:28PM
I'm not sure what the problem is, but my GFH never boots from sata normally. I can interrupt uboot and boot into recovery with the net console. When I issue a "reboot now" command from rescue, sometimes it will sometimes boot from the sata and all will be normal. It has been a few years since I really did anything with this, so I don't remember all the details of what I did when setting it up originally, but I didn't do anything unusual. I also don't remember if I made some change before it stopped working consistently. How do I get my system to consistently boot up from sata again? The led does settle on solid green, but I have no SSH and the device is not connected to the network.

I am not sure if this is a uBoot issue or something else. The fact that it works at least rarely means that it is not completely wrong.

I have the 3TB version: 16GB ext3 root partition and 2.7TB ext4 data partition. It is a MBR/GPT hybrid. I have net console and recovery. I am using U-Boot 2011.12 (Apr 18 2012 - 23:08:20)

Here are the outputs I am able to get. If you think of others I will post them right away.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give. I would love to have this nice little system working again.

handy1,

Hybrid MBR/GPT is always problemmatic. Not a very good setup. And you also running a very old U-Boot 2011.12 (Apr 18 2012 - 23:08:20) Seagate GoFlexNet.

The real solution is to:

- Upgrade to my u-boot to 2017.07-tld-1 (or the latest Arch u-boot). See release thread:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381

- Reformat the HDD to use GPT only. You will need to backup your partitions and restore it after ward.

=======

A. The intermediate step is get it booting. Keep trying until you can get it to boot successfully into Arch rootfs on SATA. Or If you don't care which distro then you can use my release Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2. But it will not boot right away, some envs need to be adjusted in netconsole.

The bottom line is you need to upgrade u-boot. You can install my released u-boot in rescue system, or you can install Arch u-boot after a successful boot into the SATA rootfs.

B. Then upgrade u-boot. And with the new u-boot, you can boot the latest Arch rootfs on a pure GPT partition setup, or with my rootfs Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.

Whether with latest Arch u-boot release, or my u-boot release, it would solve your intermittenly booting problem. Because both versions can handle GPT partitions.

I am currently booted from sata. I do not wish to change to debian (I have Arch). I also would prefer not to have to backup and reformat the HDD right now. That will be in a few weeks when I overhaul the whole setup. Right now, I just want consistent access.

Would updating the uboot be enough?
Are there pros and cons to the choice of which uboot?

Thank you for helping

The new u-boot should give you more consistent booting. But I think the quirks with the hybrid MBR/GPT will not go away completely.

Either uboot is fine. Both provide pretty much the same capabilities. However, if you are going to boot Arch, then it is better to run Arch u-boot to make it simpler. And you can get help from the Arch forum should anything goes wrong. They might be slower to respond than I do here, but eventually you will get an answer or helps because you use Arch u-boot and Arch Linux rootfs.
