Hello everyone,

I have installed the kernel 5.15.133 and 6.1.55

linux-image-5.15.133-20231006-nas5xx-armhf.zip
linux-image-6.1.55-20231006-nas5xx-armhf.zip

all working fine but the kernel error log raising

i have to consider, that this error messages always produce writings on my USB-Stick, so the lifetime will decrease a lot. Does anyone have an idea how to deal or deactivate these warnings ?

Hi askax,

Are you sure you're at the right forum? which NAS box do you have?

These messages do not reppeat. They show up only at kernel booting time. So there is no need to worry about wearing out the USB stick. Also, these are info only, not errors.

However, if these messages appear again later while the system is running, then post back here with output of
dmesg

Sounds like he has the ZyXEL NAS540 which is a four-bay dual core Freescale FS1024 based NAS.

Yeah, but I made a point of asking so the OP knows, and also reminding others, how to post problem.

Thank you for your answers.

Yeah, it's a ZyXEL NAS540 with image and kernel from https://seafile.servator.de/nas/zyxel/

After a while i have seen logs in syslog and dmesg again even after booting.

would it be a good idea to supress this with echo "1 1 1 1" > /proc/sys/kernel/printk ?

Not a good idea. You'd want the kernel to log events normally to catch errors.

This might be due to some processes that try to scan the block devices periodically. I saw plex mediaserver in the folder https://seafile.servator.de/nas/zyxel/. Is it running? I know my Debian rootfs does not have this behavior.

The correct method to supress these messages is either:

1. Find out which userspace process is trying to scan the mtd partitions periodically. And adjust some settings there to only scan normal storage devices. See suggestion number 3 below.

2. Bind mount the kernel log directory to /tmp. This is /var/log/. So all logging will go to RAM. And set up logrotate to avoid the logging eating RAM.

3. Changing the kernel bootargs to hide those mtd devices. mtdparts is the bootarg that exposes the mtd partitions to the kernel. This does not affect anything, since these mtds are relevant only when you boot stock OS. This requires serial console connection.

4. Use a kernel that does not have mtdblock configured in. This also does not affect anything, the kernel does not need mtdblock if you are not running stock OS.

I would try number 1 first. And then number 2. Number 3 and 4 are last resort solutions.

Now questions/suggestion:

1. Do you have serial console? if you do, post the entire serial boot log. If you don't have serial console, post the entire dmesg log (excerpt does not tell the whole story).

2. Which rootfs are you running on USB?

3. You can run iotop to monitor the read/write access to any block device. And hopefully you will see which process is trying to read the mtds periodically.

iotop -o -b -qqq
