Boot from GPT formated disk?

Boot from GPT formated disk?
June 06, 2016 07:45AM
Hi

I installed the new uboot on my GoFlex net and would like to boot from a USB hdd which is GPT and not MBR formated. In addition, the rootfs labeled partition is partition 5.

How can I boot from this rootfs?

I read somewhere here about booting from UEFI, but I can't find it anymore?

Just booting the GoFlex does not work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Rainer

I too had such a question when I first wanted to use GPT on my 2.5" 2TB SATA HDD for my PogoPlug Pro. As it turns out, the configuration and/or setup is the same once the HDD gets partitioned with GPT. In other words, your existing uboot setup will still work (at least mine does).

OK - so the problem is, that rootfs is in partition 5 and not 1?

rootfs should boot OK with the partition label. But the /boot must be in partition 1. To boot partition 5, you can hardcode the u-boot env. But it is a poor approach.

To ensure booting correctly, rootfs should be moved to partition 1, can you do that easily? is it a new disk?

Nope - unfortunately not. But I could do it with gparted - only I have no backup...

Dont mess with the partition if you have data in it. I'll come up with a couple solutions. What is in the 1st partition and can it be used for booting? Is it ext2,3,4?

I just realized, that the partition 1 is not a data partition, but an EFI partition which is only used by OS X. As this hdd is not used for booting on OS X, so I

  1. reformated partition one and named it boot
  2. copied the /boot folder from the rootfs into the partition
  3. rebooted on GoFlex

and it is working. It took some time to boot, but it is working.

I was thinking of marking boot as the active partition, but it is working with rootfs as active partition.

I guess this is the best approach, as partition one is only 314 MB?

Because u-boot scan all 5 partitions to find the kernel file uImage.

It is good. Not as optimum as having the entire rootfs in partition 1, but good compromise. Now you just need to remember to copy the uImage and uInitrd to this partition when you upgrade kernel or doing apt-get upgrade.

And marking partition active is no longer needed, but does not hurt to mark boot partition as active.

Thanks for the thumbs up. I will see if I can move some data around and possibly resize partition 2 so that I can put the rootfs in partition 1, but at the moment I am happy as I am simply trying OpenMediaVault on the GoFlex Net.

Thanks,

Rainer
