Pogo V3 Pro internal Dual SD Card (USB 2.0) using mPCIe slot

After much help from Bodhi, thank you! ,

I have attempted and made work a microUSB dual card in the minipcie slot, this was mainly because I don't use the wifi card and also I wanted to free up all my usb ports! Keep in mind I used a working USB rootfs with debian installed.

Please read entirely before trying this ! I claim no responsibility for personal injury or bricked unit!

How I did this was not too complicated but I wanted to log it all so others with this will be able to bypass the roadblocks I ran into, first I ordered a minipcie with dual slot microusb ports ( i'm sure others will work) :

next I ordered 2 micro pcie usb cards, I used sandisk 16gb, the reason for two was that I was hoping to use the second as a swap however I have not tested that at this time but I did format it as a linux-swap.

next I took the working usb rootfs and put it in my pc, (I used windows and miniTool Partition Wizard Edition, however I am sure you could do this in gparted or cp in terminal) then inserted the micro usb and ran the program. then I simply copied the partition. It took some time btw:)

after that i took out the micro usb and inserted the second one and formatted it to linux-swap.

next I placed both cards in the mpcie adapter ( they insert by sliding the clips and placing them in and putting the little covers back over the cards and sliding them back, yes it took me a bit to figure it out, my eyes are not what they used to be:)

I then unplugged and took apart the pogoplug, removed the wifi card on the back of the board.
next I inserted the card and tested it by powering it up out of the case, (not recommended because it has live 120v when exposed) and it did absolutely nothing!
The issue was that the card touches the board very slightly and I almost bricked the board. my fix was some small strips of electrical tape placed between the card and the board then snugging down the retaining screws. plugged it back in and had lights! simple successes excite me:) after testing it out I had net console access just like with the usb rootfs. so then i re-assembled the unit and rebooted and am keeping the usb rootfs as a backup in case I get crazy and mess up the working micro usb....


I hope this helps someone that is looking for more ports and I am no expert so feel free to let me know if there are other things I can do with this!!

Do you have a pic of the board with this card fully installed? It would be nice if you can take a few pics (without and with the Pogo case assembled)!

Bodhi, good idea, I do in fact plan to open it up again, I can take pics of the board, the on both sides with and without along with what I have done as far as keeping the sata cable and serial cable both ready by placing a small hole in the back:) probably by tomorrow some time:)

Attached are the pics of the open port on the back side of the pogoplug board the tape its to keep the card from shorting out (because it will and the unit won't start) so be sure not to over tighten when installing the card!!!!!

in these pics, as the forum only allows 3 per message,I'm showing the taped back side of the mpcie dual usb card, they are labelled 1 and 2 on the top side . Do not tape over the top side!!! just 2 precut pieces of tape will suffice. Again I did not tighten down hard on the screws they are tight but not manhandled.

in these pics are the board installed with the serial port and sata cable run through the back of the opening I drilled while apart( I used a 1/1/2 inch spade bit and a lot of care then filed the sides of it to accommodate the sata plug end.

on the next two pics I wanted to be sure there were no shorts so I taped the antenna wire ends for possible future use if i decide on wifi again.

here is the completed upgrade with the cables ready for use, I plan to silicon the opening but have not done so yet.

remember there needs to be a power supply for the sata to work and the serial needs a ttyl to usb adapter attached to actually function!

ok here is serial log, I have no usb ports plugged in at this time except the 2 cards in the mpcie card,
I'm sure there are more things to clear up but it does boot ok.
I also did some work on the swap drive which had to be set up, when I formatted it I was using partition magic and it somehow lost the UUID, after some search I was able to get that installed without tearing apart the PP again:)

Bodhi, came up with a good plan, being that the mpcie is on the back of the board I have determined that it is a complete teardown just to access the two micro sd cards which is a pain, also the electric tape was a good bandaid but ..... so I purchased an extender cable which I will wrap around to the top side of the main board of the pogoplug which in case of needed removal will be more easily accessible, I will post pics when it arrives and hope it works the way I intend it to. have a good day ! That configuration would defeat the purpose of having an internal storage drive contained inside the box.

If you need to add SD card reader/writer to this box and access it outside, then why don't you just plug in an external USB SD card reader/writer? There are 4 USB ports available, which you can also plug in more USB hubs.

The mods you did is nice because it works like having a 16 GB NAND space to store the kernel and rootfs.

Bodhi, my intention is to leave it inside the case, its just that access to the card requires unscrewing the entire board from the case, what I want to do is make it accessible without a full teardown but not to the point of making it open like the usb ports , this way if a sd card were to fail I could open up the case to change it out without unscrewing the board and disturbing the power wires and all that, it may be overkill though, lol. :)

Sounds good! not overkill at all. It is true that SD card will need to be replaced at some point if writing too much to it.

Thanks bodhi, yes I read those cards are not infinite in use, and its a big hassle unscrewing when I mess with the system so much and have to pull the card...lol which has happened enough to prompt me to take this action anyway, but it will work well for people who don't experiment too much and just want to put it in as I first set it up to work :)

Hi,

I've tried the same setup with the same type of mini pcie card plugged into an Iomega Iconnect. The led on the pcie card is green so it does get power but it doesn't read the contents of the micro SD card somehow. The same micro SD card plugged into an usb card reader boots into Debian without issues so I know the micro SD card and uboot works. Does this setup require any changes to the u-boot environment? or is it just bad luck that my setup doesn't work? The output of my current printenv is included below.

The tutorial in the 1st post is applicable only to the Pogo V3 (OXNAS SoC). The Pogo V3 has a different bootROM in hardware and different u-boot installed as for the Iomaga iConnect (Marvell Kirkwood SoC).

This means u-boot did not detect the mPCIe card that was plugged in.

The iConnect u-boot I've released (U-Boot 2017.07-tld-1) does not have PCI supports. On the iConnect, you are supposed to boot with USB rootfs and then use the mPCIe slot for other purpose.

I might revisit this PCI capability in the next u-boot release to see if it is easy to add it to all Kirkwood u-boots. In the mean time. you can only use it inside Debian after the kernel has booted.

Just an update, My first pogoplug had a board issue, the power wire leads had came out and I am horrible at soldering, I have 2 new pogoplugs so I simply moved the cards and reconfigured the new pogoplug and the setup worked flawlessly, the reason i posted in this forum was to say that the card configuration here works and has not had issues for a few months now, thanks Bodhi for being a great mentor through this!

Well its been over 6 months with this setup, I haven't made any changes on this plug and its been running full time with no hick-ups. Been using another plug to experiment with but nothing noteworthy. currently on this plug I am running 2 5tb usb hdd's on raid on my home network. I am using ES File explorer to connect my android phones and filezilla for my home pc's and using this as a backup setup for all of them. Just kinda to give an update about this setup in general:)

Still going strong after all this time, even with updates it comes right back up as well as with power drops from time to time, its been more reliable than my smart tv!! lol I still use the system daily!

Just became aware that ES file explorer was dropped by google play for invasive activity, I have switched to Cx File explorer which works equally as well. as far as the minipcie goes it has ran virtually uninterrupted daily since I started this on Apr 2018 and has the latest kernel update Kernel linux-4.4.189-oxnas-tld-1 https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,16044,88714#msg-88714 as of yesterday. Hope this helps someone!

Hi bodhi, after upgrading this system to debian bullseye, its been running strong with no issues!! I also made a new backup of the system so if the sd card dies I am in good shape, this will be a big test on how long a micro sd card can run this:)

I quite literally can access this box anywhere I am, I have it backing up 3 laptops through noip as well as 4 cell phones, there was a lot involved with setting up this to my own personal NAS cloud but there is no real software made for this and I set up my devices to access directly and perform backups to the pogoplug on demand through. totally amazing and it has raid configured. about once a month I run a backup copy to a 3rd 5 tb drive that remains unplugged for safe keeping. Totally amazing for a cheap device!!!!
