Serial wire connector too big for JST header
June 12, 2013 04:22PM
I have a question, hope someone know the answer for this:

Below are JST serial header that I've installed in some of these plugs, and the wire I used to connect the Serial module. These wire connectors fit the Serial module perfectly, but they are too loose for the JST header. What are these wire connectors called? and where can I find a smaller size? I think I could cut off one end and crimp a smaller connector on it.

@bodhi,

If it is too lose, you might want to put some solder on the pin to make it fit.

But to my opinion, it is best to put a phone jack on your device. I just fix one on each of my embedded device for easy serial connection. The motivation came from here:

I got my jacks from here:

syong,

Thanks for the links! looks really nice. For my Pogoplug E02, I just plug in the JST header and thread the 4 wires underneath the bottom front. I know, lazy :) But there is enough clearance for these small wires. It's not tidy, these wires are hanging out and need to be rolled up. This phone jack installation looks very professional. I might try this when I have time to tinker with it!

bodhi,

When you have time, these two tips might help:

  1. Solder to the pin on the other side of the board. This will keep the onboard connector intact.
  2. Use USB shield as GND will make wiring and soldering a bit easier.

So with this, you just get an headphone audio cable, open one end and connect the wires to your serial converter?

Bodhi,

Yes, that is what I did.

Syong and others,

What is the good way to cut a hole through the hard plastic case of these plugs? drilling it or use soldering iron?

I would suggest a drill, but start a small tap with a knife or nail (just so the bit doesn't skip around.

Yes, I used a drill, a punch and a file.

If I remember it correctly, I might use 1/4" drill bit.

It works on the steel case of nas320 too.
