Netgear Stora box for free
February 02, 2023 01:53PM
I have a bunch of Netgear Stora boxes that I no longer use. They are all in good conditions and have all been upgraded to current firmware, including U-Boot 20017.07, Linux kernel 6.1.7 and bodhi's root file system with Debian bullseye. Some of the boxes are booting from HDD and some are booting from an industrial grade USB-stick. I only charge shipping costs. Tell me if you already have a power adapter to save weight.

The performance of the 2009 Netgear Stora as a NAS is a bit poor compared with today's standard, but it is a good candidate for remote backup where the link bandwidth often is the tightest bottleneck. It may also be a good platform for your personal U-Boot, Linux, data acquisition, surveillance or web hosting project.

Vendor information here. Further details here and here.

Thanks a lot for the offer; I 'might be the right person and might not :-). Figure 1.3 kilos apiece (kilo 2.2 lbs I know), if you're implying two of them it's roughly 5+ pounds. I'd love to see what the industrial USB (stick I guess) looks like :-).

Here's a quote from US Postal Service as I looked up International rates: :

" up to 20 lbs. using Medium and Large Flat Rate Boxes. (See all Priority Mail International Flat Rate Products.) Postage prices start at $30.35."

As for me, next paycheck 2 weeks and $30 is doable. The postage price sounds too good to be true, and I'm bracing myself if anything's changed negatively. If it's too high then screw it someone needs it more than me. It's all good and good will. Speaking of which, the local computer guy at Goodwill got caught with some kiddie porn operation, and I'm comfortable in my small town not trusting any computer people, with all due respect.

By the way, I beta test for a high-end Norway digital audio software company and am rarely without Vita wild herring from Oslo in the refrigerator; tonight I just opened another jar; mighty tasty :-).

Your welcome, JoeyPogoPlugE02!

International postal service price table here. Up to 3 kg is NOK 472. Sadly, that's about 50% more than $30.

I've been ignorant to the Vita wild herring, but I'll give it a try. Thanks for the tip! :-)

Attached an image of 2 industrial grade memory sticks. Low capacity, but they endure daily loss of power for ~5 years or more.

Neat, thanks for sharing! Well I'll check back payday and if it still looks good this sounds doable.
I know some counties seem to have different postal rates around the world; China many times I'd buy a reasonable quality part including shipping, and I'd sometimes get it faster than eBay orders in the US!
I think it was $20 to mail a coffee mug to England one time, so that's not the same rate.

I'll have to research Netgear Stora a bit more; this could be pretty fun. Or an inglorious hell.. Did I say that? LOL

No, the Stora is fully supported here :) especially that Trond has installed latest u-boot and Debian. So you would be in good hand. But again, it's all depending on what you are going to use it for.

Some kind of poor man's Zyxel is what I have in mind. Nothing advanced at least server wise. I still have a HARD WON 5v 4A power supply that's labeled ON 100, remember that? It got me through though LOL

well if you ever get nostalgic you can always hack back in LOL (I jest).

The one spec probably right in front of me and I don't see; is there a maximum capacity hard drive(s) in TBs?

Likely 24 hours and I'll get your postage to you. Thanks again :-).

Running the new u-boot and Debian, the Stora has no limit for hard drive capacity.

:-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Just eat, sleep and live off the fat of the land LOL

Well the box arrived, everything looks good up front. I'll go slow and safe.

Only question for now is if I should hook this straight in or through a router?

@ Trond I expect money in your account within 12 hours THANKS!

Hi JoeyPogoPlugE02,

It's good to hear that the box arrived safely! If you connect the box to a router with DHCP and plug-and-play, you should be able to reach it with 'ssh':
$ ssh root@debian
or
$ ssh root@debian.local
Or you may use 'putty' from a MS Window PC.

Have fun!

Well I've got one unit with hard drive in right slot, I have SSH all good, I've had a long day and don't remember the password for root.

I'm still not sure what I have here, but if it's a pogoplug in a roundabout way with 2 x hard drive slots then very cool.

Here might be a good question: right now I may not get in because of password, but if I shut the machine off, and inserted a blank 1TB 3.5" hard drive, will it auto copy anyway? Or does it auto copy in the first place?

I'm feeling pretty good about these!

-update- thanks for the message Trond, and to everyone else, I intend to do real basic stuff, but that's worth the education cost. Also these Netgear boxes are good looking and I could drop/route my Libre Renegade if it needs more juice or tricks.
