Is there a GUI interface for Arch, Debian squeeze or thereabouts?
February 20, 2015 04:49PM
I'm too scared to partition my only working USB stick with samba, but eventually I'll have to find a way. Seems 30% of my 4GB USB stick is used on Arch Linux, which is probably way too much. Eventually i'll get the courage to try the Samba technique, and of course soon I'll be happy to try the Debian, now that it's so interesting to swap out USB sticks for a different boot/user experience.

I guess what I'm asking is, what's a good way to view and navigate the contents of what's installed?

No need for separate partition. Samba will fit just fine.
For desktop: lightVNC, xfce, xrdp.

All these will fit on a 4G, with a lot of room to spare.

Speaking of GUI, do you know if the current 3.18 kernel support USB display adapters with DisplayLink chipsets? I recall seeing a reference to it in a post (maybe from Arch Linux?) from a couple years ago but much has changed (obviously) since then. Just curious if a Plug could be used with one.

It would be a nice experniment to see if the little mighty headless 'Plug could actually pull it off. I'll have to try it with one of my Oxnas plugs.
the link is mostly good

hey you guys thanks a lot! For now and a brief while, I'll guinea pig Arch Linux and then once some things are squared away hopefully get on debian next week and do that right. Concerning Arch Linux (Arch being the reason i posted in this forum) has all kinds of incomplete website tutorials out there. Even at the Arch Linux site. I'd like to share a link that makes sense to by newbness state of mind:
un-WARNING: previous I thought the following link was somewhat bad, but the only thing that doesn't work is webmin. Samba good
http://www.entechlog.com/2014/08/pogopluge02-v4-arch-linux-samba-webmin.html

Some good news to report:
1. Samba works great
2. The freeware Partition Wizard, in Windows, copied the USB partitions to another stick and other than re-telling Samba to start and then auto start, everything seems to work. This is preliminary of course. I'll be testing ways to copy partitions because it makes some sense.

Webmin is another story. For arch linux I'm having a downer getting it working. Could be because my IP for the pogoplug is 192.168.178.100 and my localhost and 192.168.1 internal config number isn't good fer it. I'm not IP-literate.

I'm getting better at WinSCP and putty if anyone has a suggestion. Thanks a lot if you do :-)

sed -i 's^127.0.0.1^0.0.0.0^' /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf
