Webmin issue in ALARM -SOLVED :-)
February 22, 2015 01:13PM
Samba works happy but Webmin is making me suffer. I've never used Webmin, but on the surface it looks like it could help unlock the wholesome goodness of said Pogoplug :D
Here's the code:
==> To make webmin start at boot time, add webmin to rc.conf daemons
==> Point your web browser to http://localhost:10000 to use webmin.
==> The access is restricted to localhost, if you want to connect from other locations
==> change /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf to something like that: allow=127.0.0.1 <your-ip>
==> If you want to have ssl encryption please install 'perl-net-ssleay' additional.
(2/2) reinstalling perl-net-ssleay [#############################] 100%
[root@alarm ~]# http://localhost:10000

First, using WinSCP I can't see a rc.conf in Ect or anywhere else.
Second, if my Pogoplug IP is 192.168.178.100, this would mean to change the Allow line to what? I think they say 192,168,0 but that doesn't make sense. Still using 127.0.0.1 over LAN didn't work either.

Pretty sure i can lower my RAM usage once in Webmin, but it's a catch 22 getting there. Thanks lot for previous helps. I promise to help fellow newbs if you help me.

Use only when needed as it's known to be a resource hog...........
service webmin start
service webmin stop

You don't mean those commands in puTTy do you? It says command not found. Weird. Yeah I only wanted to check out Webmin and kick the tires, turn it off. Samba was the big allure of getting a pogoplug and I'm happy to say, windows and Mac both like it over LAN :) Super happy about that.Still some work to go here in other areas including torrents eventually.

-update- hey according to a locked topic at the Arch site, the last suggestion was to have a swap file. When I tried copying my 4GB Arch USB stick to a 16GB (it works!) I added a large swap file. at risk of bugging you too much, might i ask, if a Linux swap is already on, what would i do to tell Arch to look there? I could see it possible to run out of memory at 256 MB. If that's the case. it might be a wild goose chase.

You know what's cool and makes me happy? The idea i can start from scratch and try Debian next time :) Pretty sure i can handle WinSCP duties now. All in all, a very cool $18 and Windows/Hackintosh both get into it.

its more like

systemctl webmin enable
systemctl webmin start
Re: Webmin issue in ALARM
February 23, 2015 08:09AM
you will also need to modify the webmin configuration file to allow external hosts or your subnet access to manage the device
Re: Webmin issue in ALARM
February 23, 2015 10:44AM
[root@alarm ~]# systemctl webmin enable
Unknown operation 'webmin'.
[root@alarm ~]# systemctl webmin start
Unknown operation 'webmin'.

I can't for the life of me figure this out.

The Pogoplug is on 192.168.178.100 and I've both put in allow for what they specify, which is 192.168.1 but also my pogoplug's direct IP. Neither using that IP nor localhost, with the port 10000 helps. So far.

Hey Gravelrash, I've been looking around this wonderful site a bit and see last year you'd offered an image to download. Does this by chance have Webmin running on it? I might jsut carefully label my USB stick with Arch and move on to Debian and see if Webmin sets up. If so, Debian wins :D

I am running Debian Wheezy with kernel 3.14.0-kirkwood-tld-1 on a Pogoplug E02 and Webmin is fine on it. It's the full version available from webmin.com, not a watered down ALARM package.

Could you point me to the place to get a reliable wheezy? I tried again just now but it wants to boot into pogoplug.

I used either this HOWTO but only the Debian install section:

http://blog.qnology.com/2014/07/hacking-pogoplug-v4-series-4-and-mobile.html

Or this script:

http://www.vinnymac.org/scripts/pogoplug/kirkwood.debian-wheezy.sh

It's been a long time, so I don't remember for sure.

I tried both, and for one, it's an E02 not version 4, and the other one doesn't work anymore.

Oh well, Arch with Samba beats Debian that doesn't work at all, anytime.
With all due respect Frederick, might be advantageous to newbs if you deleted your posts.

Advice: never a blanket statement :) Arch or Debian does not matter. What matter is the users who install the tools correctly or not.

True that.

For Webmin on ALARM - http://blog.qnology.com/2013/03/tutorial-pogoplug-e02-with-arch-linux.html

The correct command on alarm is:

systemctl enable webmin
systemctl start webmin

For Webmin on Debian - http://blog.qnology.com/2014/11/debian-on-pogoplug-tutorial-webmin.html

Doesn't matter if you're using E02 or V4.

There is adequate information in the URLs I posted to get Debian installed to a Pogoplug E02. But as bodhi implied, you have to know what you are doing. I just took the appropriate information and installed Debian to a fresh USB stick and it booted fine.

Really really nice resource, i'll study that for a while to get the hang of mounting additional disk info.
Now on the Webmin, I tried this again at http://blog.qnology.com/2013/03/tutorial-pogoplug-e02-with-arch-linux.html and it still doesn't work.I was convinced it would if for no other reason I made sure to setup a swap file.

Webmin at "alarm" is 192.168.178.100. So I type https://192.168.178.100:10000 right? No get in.
So I look in /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf (with WinSCP) and add "allow=192.168.178.100port=10000" - did i do that right?

I won't bug you guys and am well aware not to wear out my welcome. I'm not being humble in saying that, as I've done that before LOL
Re: Webmin issue in ALARM

Your allow= statement is wrong. You should delete it and restart Webmin.

If you still can't connect to Webmin, there are several possible reasons why not, in addition to an incorrect allow= statement, including but not limited to:

1) Webmin isn't running. Run the following command in a shell on the E02 to see:

ps aux | grep webmin

2) Webmin not bound to a routable IP address. Check and compare the below from a shell on the E02:

telnet localhost 10000

telnet 192.168.178.100 10000

3) Firewall blocking the listening port. If iptables is running? If so, is it configured to allow connections to TCP port 10000?

If you are running the Arch Linux Webmin package, there is no telling how it is configured by default. The package is extremely cut down compared to the standard Webmin package and not easily extensible. If you really want Webmin on a plug computer, run the standard distribution of it on Debian.

Post your entire miniserv.conf file and I'll take a look at it.
Re: Webmin issue in ALARM

The tutorial assumes you're installing webmin from scratch. The installation isn't rocket science.

It's literally 4 commands - install webmin, update config, start webmin, enable webmin to start after reboot.

Check your miniserv.conf file. Keep things simple and allow any address to connect. Once you get things working you can secure things up a bit.

BTW, why is your Pogoplug on a totally separate network (192.168.178.x) versus your PC (192.168.1.x)? Why are you making things harder than it needs to be? Again, keep things simple and get it working first.

pacman -Sy webmin perl-net-ssleay nano

#allow any IP to connect
sed -i 's^127.0.0.1^0.0.0.0^' /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf

#start webmin
systemctl start webmin

#auto start after reboot
systemctl enable webmin

If you can wait till the weekend. I will upload an image for you. With webmin and samba preinstalled.

This will require however that you have the latest uboot installed with the correct default env statements.

Look at it as "this is what I want to use until i learn how to do it myself". Rather than a oooh its all ready and off we go!!!!

I wouldn't be doing anything for your geek cred or skill base if. You looked at it any other way ;-)
super cool. wait...jinxed?

Wow thanks you guys - and yes on all counts.
Unfortunately last night, two hours after taking Melatonin, I turned off the Pogoplug by unplugging the power cord and neither stick wants to boot. No problem, another install wouldn't kill me at all LOL

So I'll take two of you up on your offers to check my config file, and quickly answer a couple questions:

My router (Rosewill) is set to 192.168.178.1 because it the WAN outputs to DSL modem (AT&T) or else it freaks out if i use the usual IP.
My computer and pogoplug are both plugged into the Rosewill.

@ Gravelrash I agree about improving my geekery :-D.

BIAB I'll edit this more, thanks again, wow.

-update- tried reinstalling as per Arch Linux site (it worked before) and it failed. Probably wrong sequence of Uboot, or maybe the temp file within the locked pogoplug is full and ran out of space or summin'

-more update- Qui's way definitly works better than Arch! At least it installs. To advanced users, I have a feeling (could be wrong) it's because right before untarring, Qui makes use of the * after kirkwood and maybe it's a long name issue. Still,

So right now I've got it to the install point. Maybe Perl didn't update then.

Still didn't brick it! So there's hope. Gents I'll double-check then do your advice... hold on a little bit...
