steam link hacks

habibie,

Oh, nothing to be sorry about. That's my educated guess, I could be wrong! I have never seen the Steam controller, either.

There was a time I built my own HTPC (hardware and software, ie. XBMC) so I was quite familiar with sound codecs and remote controls. Steamlink came later than that time.

I just read all threads.
So we stopped because we can not stop the booting process?

I think it is more like the boot record is encrypted?

My guess is that this will need a uBoot exploit. The hardware is very similar to the original ChromeCast (the main difference seems to be the use of the 88W8897 for WiFi/Bluetooth) so it's possible they're using the same Marvell fork of uBoot and the exploit that was used to root the ChromeCast could still work...

Hopefully, Bodhi will be able to make use of this information. Thank you.

That looks promising. In fact I've known this is the path (Google Chromecast) to take. But since I botched the Steamlink serial console header, it was fried. I have another Steamlink still on the shelf, but it is too time consuming to start and finish this project. There are many things on my queue right now.

BTW, feas (OP) had a stroke long time ago. I sincerely hope he recovered well.

Hey, pretty new to all this hacking stuff. I'm a lowlevel developer myself and I had one of these laying around. I wanted to see if you could write some kind of custom firmware/linux os thats much more trimmed down than the original to use it as a decent emulation box (I'm hoping to use it for super smash bros haha)

Its been almost 2 years, are you still down to try unlocking the bootloader on this machine?

No. I have not looked at this since I posted the above. And I don't have any plan to start, either.

Oh really, may I ask why? If I wanted to start the journey myself, do you have any tips/resources you may be able to provide?

Hello! It's been awhile and I have a lot more experience doing electronics stuff. I tore down my steam link laying in my closet and hooked up a pi running minicom to it. So far, I've just found out stuff already mentioned on this forum. I'll let you guys know if I find anything groundbreaking.

I have one of these in a box as well and a pi sitting around, Is there a quick summary of how to hook these up for debugging? Have you had any luck?

I assume the chromecast uboot hack method is still worth investigating?
