I have a question about dd command: is it safe to use dd command to backup the flash drive where the debain OS is running, i.e., dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/media/usb1/backup-disk.img Thanks in advance.by davidnewton - Debian
bodhi: Thanks a lot. With the option of async, the copy speed is normal now. rat: Thanks for the information too. My problem is that even with large files, the speed is still very low. bodhi's instruction on mount option with async fixed the problem.by davidnewton - Debian
It seems that the speed is very slow when I copy files between different drives on my dockstar running debian usng "cp -R" command. I have tried many different flash or hard drives with different formats (ext2, ext3, ntfs). When I use hdparm to check the speed for these drives, all of them can reach 20+ MB/s, but when I use cp command, I may get as low as 30kB/s. It is much faster whenby davidnewton - Debian
I would like to install dansguardian on my dockstar with debian squeeze. I got the following error message during installation. Please tell if there is any solution. Here is the best solultion as I posted in the other thread: Using gorgone's script can install Debian Squeeze without problem. It is as simple as Jeff's script, but there is no problem as mentioned by many people here. It is much faster than the other ways recommended in another thread: installing lenny and upgrading to squeeze (only about 25 min.). Here is the link: The commandsby davidnewton - Debian

My dockstar with debian have kept running for quite some time without problem. Last night, I tried to use different wlan adapters and it worked fine for eth0, and wlan0, wlan1 etc. But then, the last reboot failed. I unplugged the flash drive with debian and let it boot to pogoplug firmware. Then I mounted that flash drive and checked the log file. My dockstar works fine with debian squeeze running asterisk, lighttpd, samba and cups. It looks like that there are many logging activities in the /var/log directory. To reduce the flash drive wearing, I would like to re-direct all the logs to another flash drive. Is there a way to mount or link /var/log to another drive? Thanks in advance. UPDATE: found the answer. Please ignore. Thanks.by davidnewton - Debian

I have a question: one of my dockstar's firmware was automatically updated and I have enabled the ssh through my.pogoplug.com. I am using optware on it. With the updated firmware, is it safe to install the debian as the instruction by Jeff? I have another dockstar with debian and this one works very well, that is why I would like to have the first one to have debian too. But I am not sure ifby davidnewton - Debian

Thanks a lot. I found the commands to activate the swap file from http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-add-a-swap-file-howto/. It works for me now. BTW, I have another question about the device label: if I have 2 hard disks or 2 flash drives connected to the dockstar, how does it assign the device label? Now I understand that the hard disk will get the lower label than the flash drive, but if boby davidnewton - Debian
I have installed debian on my dockstar without problem. It works well with samba and asterisk. I have partitioned the flash drive with 256MB swap space on partition 2 as instructed by Jeff. Today I tried to plug an hard disk to the dockstar and share it with samba. It looks working fine, but when I use top to check free memory, it shows that the swap is not available anymore.
