@Bodhi: I strongly don't recommend using a cp utility to copy/backup a live filesystem as you mentioned above in f section. The reason is simply a live filesystem contains /proc subdirectory whose files may and/or may not be copied (Hint: do a google search on this). If one must use the cp utility to copy/backup a live filesystem, perhaps perusing this discussion thread to learn more about wby habibie - Debian

@Joey: I do this all the time on any Linux desktop and/or embedded computer to copy a file system from one storage to a tarred file using a tar command. In my case, I use the approach to create a backup tarred file. Then, using the same tar utility to dump the backup tarred file to any mounted storage of any supported formatted file system, i.e. btrfs, ext2/3/4, raiserfs, vfat, xfs, etc. Thisby habibie - Off-Topic
I could be wrong, but it sounded like the USB drive has some problems, i.e. no partition or the partition is dirty or damage, etc. Also, the ALERT! /dev/disk/by-label/rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell! message (quoted below) indicates this USB drive has no rootfs label (or damage). Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ... done. done. Currently Fry's Electronics is selling this Ematic 8" Touchscreen 2-in-1 Intel Atom Quad Core Laptop With 1GB Memory, 32GB Storage, Windows 10 $121.00 - $62 (today's -6/14/17 - promo code: 7075948) = $59 + sales tax. Bodhi, the uImage file is the one generated by both OpenWRT and/or LEDE build process. The DTB file I had to copy from the Linux source directory as shown previously because the DTB file is no longer provided by the build process. My understanding on what you said is the uImage file (FIT) is not compatible with the legacy format.by habibie - Off-Topic
