Paul,

So I think the next step is to flash the whole mtd0 or the env image (that I will extract).

Let's do that tomorrow (take it slow, we are not in a hurry).

Look at stormy post again to see if you can get the USB drive recognized:

Dear Bodhi

USB is still recognised - as it was yesterday - but overflow is still happening:

Hi Paul,

That looks good. Even though the filesize was not stored, the image was loaded OK.

So you could try

ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /u-boot_mtd0
go 0x800200
See if it runs OK. I think it will have the same envs problem, but good to know that it can run.

Since your USB is working, I think we can try to flash the envs block extracted from u-boot_mtd0 first. And then if it does not work, we will flash the whole mtd0.

I'm in PST timezone and usually free after 8PM PST.

Hi Bodhi
Here is the report. I tried the 'go' command even though I got an error from the ext2load. It locked the Stora (twice) so I have to pull the plug and reset:

Paul,

If it locks up like that, then I am hesitate to use the whole mtd0 backup.

=======

stormy,

Perhaps you can try the same and let me know. And please upload your mtd0 backup here.

=======

I will extract the envs image and both of you can flash it.

Hey bodhi. Thanks again for your help. Maybe when you have the time you can look at my other questions in that post.

PS: What do you need from me to upload? The u-boot.mtd0 file? Thats actually the flashware.img renamed. So rename flashware.img back to u-boot.mtd0. They are the same files.

Ah. Paul already has flashware.img. But in your post, you should attach that file any way. It will be useful for future unbricking Stora (I think this is a common problem).

I tried a couple of days ago to attach flashware.img but its bigger than 1000k. I think is 1MB so 1024K.

Dear Bodhi and Peter (Stormy)

You are my lifesavers! I followed Stormy's instructions from https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,104929,105219#msg-105219 and my box is now back to a 'normal' boot - I hope I did the correct thing by stopping the reboot with any key?

Dear Bodhi
So I've followed your "25 August 2019" instructions to the letter, carried out "step 4" unmounted the USB drive and plugged into the Stora which was then cold started. I let it autoboot. Unexpectedly the load made constant references to Hipserv (axentra/netgear's resources) and finally I end up with a mystora.com login. Is this correct? I was expecting native Debian 5.2.9.

Paul,

You've booted into stock OS.

To boot new Debian rootfs from stock OS, there are some envs adjustment needed.

At u-boot prompt in serial consoel,

printenv
And post the log here. And the log should be in code tags (formatted code, the button right beside the Quote button when you edit).

Dear Bodhi

So I've worked out that my box is not now booting from the USB drive, so I'm running through the default 'netgear stora' boot procedure. At least my device is not bricked! If I restart the box and interrupt the autoboot I get back to u-boot.

Dear Bodhi
I've repeated the cold start boot to u-boot and format copied the 'printenv' report to my previous posting above. Compared to Teddy's printenv at the start of this topic, I've figured that I'm missing

missing envs

mtdparts=orion_nand:0x100000@0(uboot), 0xff00000@0x100000(root) {I'm not sure about this one}

I'll wait for your guidance. Regards, Paul

Don't worry about mtdparts yet.
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage; if ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd; then bootm 0x800000 0x2100000; else bootm 0x800000; fi'
setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'

printenv

and then

Boot Kirkwood rootfs with stock u-boot
June 24, 2020 04:36PM
Boot Kirkwood rootfs with stock u-boot

Note: I've updated this instruction to make it more robust (to take into consideration the limitation of much older stock u-boots)

1. Booting with stock u-boot that supports usb, ext2load, and run commands

Assuming you have created a USB rootfs following the instruction in the release thread.

Power up, interrupt u-boot count down, and then.

setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'
setenv bootcmd 'usb reset; run usb_bootcmd; usb stop; reset'
And then,
printenv
boot

2. Booting with stock u-boot that does not supports usb, ext2load, and run commands

In case stock u-boot is way too limited, i.e. without the ability to use a USB drive (and also some u-boot does not even have the run or boot command), we'll use tftpboot to load the kernel files from tftp server. And then set up the envs to boot to USB rootfs.

- Assuming you have created a USB rootfs following the instruction in the release thread.
- Assuming you have set up a tftp server on another Linux box. And the tftp root on that box is at /tftproot folder.

2.a Preparing the kernel files

- Copy the uImage and uInitrd from the USB rootfs to the /tftproot folder on the Linux box that's running the tftp server.

- Assuming the tftp server box's IP address is 192.168.0.200, and the IP address you've chosen for this box is 192.168.0.100 (and therefore your router IP address is 192.168.0.1). Below, adjust the ipaddr and serverip to conform to the real IP addresses in your network environment.

2.b Boot the box

Power up, interrupt u-boot count down, and then,

setenv ipaddr 192.168.0.100
setenv serverip 192.168.0.200
setenv bootargs 'console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
mw 0x800000 0 1
tftpboot 0x800000 uImage
tftpboot 0x2100000 uInitrd
and then
printenv
bootm 0x800000 0x2100000

=================

Old instruction kept for posterity.

I don't know the login username and pw. After login I assume I should follow Note 1 and Note 2 - new SSH key etc? Should I save the environments sometime?
Very many thanks and regards, Paul

Congrats!

The credential is root/root.

Do Note 1, and ignore Note 2.

Hi Bodhi

Sorry for the delay. All done past Note1. uInitrd boot file has been regenerated.

Ready for the next step. Paul

Paul,

To make it permanent, reboot and repeat the setenv commands:

setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'
setenv bootcmd 'usb start; run usb_bootcmd; usb stop; reset'

Before booting, do a save:
saveenv

For keepsake:
printenv
and then
boot

From now on it is permanent.

=====

We should temoprarily stop while we are ahead :) in the future, you might want to install new u-boot:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381

to take advantage of the new features (eg. be able to boot with Ext4 rootfs, and use large HDD...).

For now it is OK to run stock u-boot, until you need the new capabilities that the new u-boot provides.

Dear Bodhi

Thank you very much indeed. You have been so patient and supportive. I have so much to learn - hopefully safely ;-))

Take care. Best regards, Paul
