Hey Bodhi,

I've been following multiple post on here where you've been helping people unbrick or upgrade their devices.
I have inherited a Netgear Stora from someone that they had reset (and therefore couldn't access the online accounts anymore) and I did successfully root it. But during my mad searching and testing, following instructions online to install debian (before I found you guide) I managed to mess it up completely having pretty much the same issues Paul and some others have faced.

Currently I get the everything is deleted, can't create new settings and for whatever reason doesn't I can't get the usb to load. On the rare occasion it detects the storage device, it tells me it's a bad partition and can't boot from it.

I can access it from the serial cable to view it but kwboot just gives the "restart" and then the handshake code with no boot and nothing happens after.

I'm still getting used to linux systems, been away from them for a few years so don't know if it's my own mistakes by forgetting a simple thing or my usb is useless or i've just bricked it but would appreciate your help if you can!

Hey Mitch,

Sounds like it is only semibricked.

The best way forward is to get it to boot to the Debian USB rootfs.

So create the rootfs on USB using Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 from the release thread:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

And the connect serial console, attach the USB rootfs. And power up. Interrupt serial console and

printenv
usb reset
If the USB is detected as storage device,
usb part
ext2ls usb 0:1 /boot

If the USB is not detected, do a few
usb reset
(wait a few seconds in between each usb reset).
and repeat
usb part
ext2ls usb 0:1 /boot

And then post the entire serial console log here.

Hi Bodhi,

I have some trouble with unbricking my stora. I did a resetenv and now the U-boot is corrupted. I have read through several posts here and tried everything. My first plan was to follow the steps described by stormy here: https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,104929,105219#msg-105219, by using the flashware.img file. The problem (I think) is that the USB drive can't be read, it starts to load and then it errors out.
** ext2fs_devread() read error - block

It is the same no matter which USB drive I use, and I also tried removing the partition table, creating a new partition, and creating a new ext2 filesystem as you suggested earlier in this thread.

Here is the entire U-boot log:

That's the correct procedure. You might want to try to format the USB drive with FAT (not Ext2/Ext3).

rajt,

It means there is problem in this u-boot FAT driver that it crashed.

So I checked Stormy's post

Quote

-create USB flash drive with ext2 filesystem and a single primary partition(I used easeus partition master 14 which by default makes the USB partition logical and uboot cannot see it - so be carefull to make the usb partition primary)

You should use fdisk to wipe and recreate the partition (don't use any other command or GUI to do this). And then format the partition with Ext2 using command mkfs.ext2.

I tried it one more time and it worked! Back to stock os :)
The funny thing is that I already did this ten times. Now I will try to boot in to the Debian rootfs.

I got the rootfs working. When I run apt-get upgrade, the USB port seems to reset, and then I need to reinstall the roots to get it to boot again.
The error always occurs when unpacking libbz2.

That's odd. I have seen that myself or heard anybody reported this.

Swap migh or might not related to this problem.

Just a reminder, after you installed the rootfs on USB, you should set up swap file/partition before doing apt-get upgrade (I was not clear about this in the installation instruction). But a lot of time, swap space is needed because upgrade takes a lot of RAM.

I did setup swap, 256MB, but maybe it is not enough?

Usually you'd want at least 4xRAM, so box with 128M should have a swap file of 512MB or larger. The old convention is 2xRAM, but with this new kernel configuration, 4xRAM or greater is the best. Larger swap space does not hurt, either.

With that said, if you have 256MB RAM, then it might not be related to this bzip2 installtion problem. But do try 512MB swap file or larger.

This is stock u-boot so sometime it needs a bit more envs adjustment. Add one more setenv command to your set of envs

setenv mainlineLinux yes

Hello Bodhi,

It seems I had a typo in a line when typing the commands for making the usb.
I repeated everything and then it continues with your default envs settings.

So I am at the prompt and logged in and made the swapfile then tried a reboot. It works so will now continue the other steps and then need to make it permanent. Is there a link to how to store this to I assume on the disks or raid?

thank you very much.

Re: Boot Kirkwood rootfs with stock u-boot
October 12, 2022 02:41AM
Hello Bodhi,

I have done most of the optional stuff except the fake hw clock and dns manager.

I did notice for adding and installing the extra stuff.

"Important Correction:

After releasing this rootfs,

1. I realized I've missed one package that needs to be installed in order to make fw_printenv and fw_setenv available (these binaries have been moved to package libubootenv-tool in bullseye) . So do this if you want to list or set envs in Debian.
apt-get install libubootenv-tool

2. There was an obsolete source in /etc/apt/source.list. Please change the old security repo to
deb https://security.debian.org/debian-security bullseye-security main contrib non-free"

I had to install the ca-certificates. But is it correct that I also had to mark out the line with deb-src because it keeps giving errors on apt-update

root@debian:/boot# cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian bullseye main
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian bullseye main

#deb http://security.debian.org/ bullseye/updates main contrib non-free
deb https://security.debian.org/debian-security bullseye-security main contrib non-free
#deb-src https://security.debian.org/debian-security bullseye/updates main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://security.debian.org/ bullseye/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://http.debian.net/debian bullseye-updates main contrib
deb-src http://http.debian.net/debian bullseye-updates main contrib

anyway now I am stuck on the step for working with systemd it seems something is wrong? Please advise so I am not messing up my system.
Will also google for the errors it spits out.

Thank you again in advance for any help or direction you can give.

Hello Bohdi,

Sorry for all the maybe useless pasting of info. I managed to fix the locale warnings but still stuck on the fw_printenv / fw_setenv part.

Maybe this info gives an idea?

root@debian:~# fw_printenv
Cannot read environment, using default
Cannot read default environment from file
root@debian:~# cat /etc/fw_env.config
# MTD device name	Device offset	Env. size	Flash sector size	Number of sectors

root@debian:~#
root@debian:~# ls -alh /etc/fw_env.config
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 112 Feb 24 2012 /etc/fw_env.config
root@debian:~#

Regards, Cable

Re: Boot Kirkwood rootfs with stock u-boot
October 12, 2022 11:12PM
Cable,

The reason fw_setenv and fw_printenv did not work because you are booting with stock u-boot, so the envs need more adjustments. It is specific to each stock u-boot regarding how it sees the envs (i.e. location), and mtdparts env is how u-boot passes the definition to the kernel.

Modify the bootargs env to include mtdparts in bootargs:
Marvell>> setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'
Marvell>> setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
Marvell>> setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
Marvell>> setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
Marvell>> setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'
Marvell>> setenv bootcmd 'usb reset; run usb_bootcmd; usb stop; reset'

Set additional env:
setenv mtdparts xxx
And then boot
boot

Let's see if we can find what xxx should be in this ix4_200d working thread:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,25120

I'll be back.

Hello Bodhi,

Thank you for the answer. From where you pointed at I found this line added under what you wrote. Not sure if that is correct for the iomega-ix4-200d.

setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'
setenv bootcmd 'usb reset; run usb_bootcmd; usb stop; reset'

setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=orion_nand:1M(u-boot),4M(uImage),-(rootfs)'

It booted fine this are the full boot log and my trying to provide info commands haha.

Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0

Ok will await your answers now before I break more instead of installing it on the disk ;)

Re: Boot Kirkwood rootfs with stock u-boot
October 14, 2022 06:38AM
Cable,

Apparently this default address 0xc0000 in in the rootfs is not appropriate for this box. It's been tto long ago, I can't remember what the address should be for ix4_200d.

root@debian:~# cat /etc/fw_env.config
# MTD device name Device offset Env. size Flash sector size Number of sectors
/dev/mtd0 0xc0000 0x20000 0x20000

Search in this thread (backward) for what fw_env.config content should be (changing this file will not hurt anything).

Hello Bodhi,

Well I managed to now let it start with the rootfs from disk. Using most of the wiki boot from raid1 info. Except now it still boots from usb disk kernel and then loads the disk rootfs if I see it correct.

Is that because of that file?

Hello Bodhi,

It now seems to give no more errors. Runs with your downloaded tool set and the build tool set.
Now I am still trying to see how to change the envs so it will boot directly from disk.

Hello Bodhi,

I was searching if I stored somewhere my original boot log when it was still running the latest firmware from iomega.

there I saw this line.

Kernel command line: console=ttyS0,115200 mtdparts=nand_mtd:0xa0000@0x0(uboot),0x10000@0xa0000(env),0x224000@0xb0000(zImage),0x224000@0x2d4000(initrd),32m@0x0(flash)

also this

NAND device: Manufacturer ID: 0xec, Chip ID: 0x75 (Samsung NAND 32MiB 3,3V 8-bit)
Scanning device for bad blocks
5 cmdlinepart partitions found on MTD device nand_mtd
Using command line partition definition
Creating 5 MTD partitions on "nand_mtd":

0x000a0000-0x000b0000 : "env"
0x000b0000-0x002d4000 : "zImage"
0x002d4000-0x004f8000 : "initrd"
0x00000000-0x02000000 : "flash"

Don't know if that is helpful.

Also added the full boot log so maybe it also helps.

It is a correct behavior. The set of u-boot envs you are using is loading the kernel from USB. But when the kernel loading rootfs, it uses the rootfs on HDD.

IIRC, some stock u-boot vesion for this box does not have command to load kernel from HDD. People have to resort to reading raw sectors.

Hello Bodhi,

Thank you for your answer.
I will indeed look in to the working thread to see what I can find. I also stumbled on the web on this site with scripts to automate a (Lenovo)iomega-ix2 install for either usb / ide or disk install so was also reading trough the scripts what it does. It seems to have been made for using your Kirkwood builds.
https://minaret.biz/tips/ix2/index.html#introduction

So maybe in general it can help with a wiki page? It seems to also hold info to make it boot from disk but still search USB stick if disk boot fails.
If not ignore it ;) (Ok never mind now pressing your wiki link I see it is there already XD lol sorry....

Then one general question about my current situation. Is it bad how my current system is running now with a kernel running on USB then mounting te rootfs from raid?
(maybe for updates etc it gets out of sync? or will it ware out the USB Drive?
Or is it just fine to let it be like that? I did install the latest kernel on both the stick and the rootfs on md0

Thank you for the help so far and like I said will continue digging more info.

It is a good setup.

The USB drive should have only kernel files (uImage and uInitrd) on /boot folder. Remove the rest of the rootfs on USB to avoid confusion later. Each time you upgrade the kernel on the HDD rootfs, copy these 2 files over to USB.
