Re: Install Debian on Synology DS413J

Hi there,

I'm working on it.
I'm on the step to make a new uImage with this command :
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage

Btw i'm wondering what to do with the DTS file that i downloaded ? I need to put it in the ./boot/dts folder ? Do i need to rename it ?

Thanks

No need to, have you created the USB rootfs? based on what you posted above you might have used the wrong section. That was when you upgrade kernel. The initial installation is creating a USB rootfs down below (dated 26 Sept 2021).

Note the instruction.

Quote

Note: If this is your first time installation, then you only need rootfs Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 (this has kernel linux-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 already installed). Please scroll down to 26 Sept 2021 section for download link and installation instruction.

And remember to follow the steps verbatim. You need to be root, and label the partition rootfs.

And copy only the DTB file to /boot/dts. The DTS is not needed. When you are going through the insallation steps for the rootfs, it will be obvious.

Re: Install Debian on Synology DS413J

I was root.
The problem is my comprehension.
I mixed the tutorial to make uimage. I don't touche unitrd.
I tftped them on my nas and tried to boot.
But my hdd on my nas aren t ready.

If I follow the tutorial. I put on a usb stick but some command seems to be for the host like sync and reboot.

I think a part is missing to do the usb ?

Can you explain me more (and for others)?

Do I need to do usb or tftp? Is there all the steps for usb ?
I'll do it again.

The problem i don't understand in the first place (i read another topic about DS218(j) )
We need the usb key with the rootfs and all stuff and we need to tftp uImage et uInitrd to boot on this usb key

Ok, let me give you the log :

Re: Install Debian on Synology DS413J

BillyIT,

Next time please post log starting from u-boot banner, so I can see the setenv comands.

You're stuck there because you've missed this setting:
Marvell>> setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial
So the kernel did not look for rootfs partition on USB drive.

Trying to find the problem...
Some people said to use lspci to detect the hardware but it is not implemented on the debian, so i downloaded all and do :

Quote

root@debian:~# lspci
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Device 6282 (rev 01)
00:02.0 PCI bridge: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Device 6282 (rev 01)
01:00.0 SCSI storage controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SX7042 PCI-e 4-
port SATA-II (rev 02)

No information about the ethernet controller/port/card/soc...

With verbose :

BillyIT,

> Some people said to use lspci to detect the
> hardware but it is not implemented on the debian,

That's wrong information.

lspci is to only list the PCIe ports and devices connected to them. lsusb does the same for USB ports. lsblk does the same for block device suchs as SATA, USB,...

I reread the posts, and recall now we have not got Ethernet working back then. There is a piece of information that I need: the Ethernet PHY address. If you or somebody can still log in to stock DSM on this 413j, then it is quite easy to find out using ethtool. Or if we can get GPL source code from Synology, then it also easy to find.

Each boards have their own way, but in general Kirkwood boards such as this NAS, there is only a few settings, so we can also trial and error.

So you can search the net for the info, and I will also create a few variations of the DTB for you to try.

I'm open to test with you the trial and error.

Jan puts gpl source. Is it inside or is the DSL source ?

If I know how to rebuild the DSM, I'm opened to do it to find the information. It could help People like trying to unbrick this device.
This topic is hot on google.

If you have tutorial on how to do DTB, I could do it. I'm a remote worker so I can do it all day long

Usually GPL source can be found at Synology Source Forge site.

Does this box have 2 Ethernet ports or 1 port?

======

Try booting again, but before bootm, also get the listing of the envs.
printenv
bootm 0x800000 0x2100000

And post the entire serial console log here, or use pastebin.

ok, i found how to send the DSM back in my nas ! (so easy after doing the debian stuff)

i tried ethtool but i wasn't root... So i did "su -" but my password didn't work and after i tried "sudo su -" and boom :

root@bbpnas:~# ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
Supported ports: [ ]
Supported link modes: Not reported
Supported pause frame use: No
Supports auto-negotiation: No
Advertised link modes: Not reported
Advertised pause frame use: No
Advertised auto-negotiation: No
Speed: 1000Mb/s
Duplex: Full
Port: MII
PHYAD: 1
Transceiver: internal
Auto-negotiation: off
Supports Wake-on: g
Wake-on: d
Link detected: yes

So for my Physical Address you asked is 1 ? Correct ? big improvement, isn't it ?

Well :)
What's the next step ?

I have 4 disks of 1 Tb to put inside and would like some raid 5.
Can you help for the beginnin to put all together ?

Cool!

> What's the next step ?

Since this is practically a new box to us here, there are quite a few things to check out to see if they work.

But first, there are optional Steps in the installation.

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096
Quote

Take this USB rootfs to your plug and cold start. After booted into Debian, see Note 1-5 below.

Note 1 (Strongly Recommended):

To keep the rootfs extremely basic and small, there is no swap space set up for it. The first thing you should do after the 1st boot is to set up a swap file to make the system run better. In fact, system upgrades oftently fail to run without swap. Please see here for instruction how to do that.

Note 2 (Optional):

The rootfs will automatically generate new SSH keys at 1st boot (see /etc/rc.local). However, if you would like to generate the keys again then do:

rm /etc/ssh/ssh_host*
ssh-keygen -A

Note 3 (Optional):

Update your rootfs to get the latest Debian package security updates (if the installation is done at a much later date than the time of this release).

Check the system clock to make sure it is the current time (boxes without RTC is using NTP so quite slow to update the clock).

date
And upgrade
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

Warning: Watch the apt-get upgrade progress. If the apt-get upgrade results in a new initramfs, the log would shows this message:
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1

Then you need to regenerate the uInitrd boot file:
cd /boot
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -a 0x00000000 -e 0x00000000 -n initramfs-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 -d initrd.img-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 uInitrd

For boxes without RTC , also consider install fake-hwclock to ensure the clock is relatively close to real time after a reboot or cold start.
apt-get install fake-hwclock

Note 4 (Optional):

Some network environment is not very robust in propagating the host name advertised by avahi. If you cannot find the host name of this rootfs in your network, you might need to install libnss-mdns.

apt-get install libnss-mdns

Note 5 (Optional):

To boot with systemd, add parameter init=/bin/systemd to your u-boot env bootargs (beware that in later Debian distribution, the location of systemd binary might have changed).

- For example,
fw_setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts init=/bin/systemd'

- Or, if you are booting with my latest u-boot images you can also use the uEnv.txt capability to do this. In the default envs, custom_params is a variable that allows you to add extra bootargs. So add the following line to uEnv.txt:
custom_params=init=/bin/systemd

If that's still not possible to run systemd, you might want to install it again:
apt-get install systemd

You should do Note1 and Note3. No need to do Note 2, 4, 5.

And then check to see all devices are working. They show in the boot log, so please post dmesg output or the serial boot log if you already have saved it.

SATA: put in all 4 disks and see if they are detected

USB: there are 2 ports

LEDs: list the leds and try to control them
ls -l /sys/class/leds

RTC: should show in dmesg

Power off: it should shutdown and power off the box completely.
shutdown -h now

In the mean time, I have a new DTB for you to try. I expect it to boot and Ethernet will work the same (I only corrected the nomenclature).

Re: Install Debian on Synology DS413J

Configuration options.

1. USB rootfs, HDDs are for data only (could be a RAID setup, or just normal Ext3/Ext4)
2. HDD rootfs on HDD1, the other 3 for data (could be a RAID setup, or just normal Ext3/Ext4.)

3. Kernel on USB, HDD rootfs on HDD1, the other 3 for data (could be RAID, or just normal Ext3/Ext4.)
4. Kernel on USB, HDDs are RAID, rootfs on md0 (first RAID device).

5. Kernel on SPI flash: not possible because the flash is only 8MB.

The easiest and least complicate is first in this order.

1. You already got it working

2. Format the HDD1 with multiple parttions, the first is EXt3/Ext4 and say the size is 100GB, copy the rootfs from USB rootfs to it (or create a brandnew rootfs). Adjust the u-boot envs to boot with HDDs rootfs only.

3. Keep booting with kernel on USB, but the rootfs is on HDD1 with Ext3/Ext4 partition, like in number 2.

4. Boot with USB rootfs, and setup RAID, copy the rootfs from USB rootfs to it, or create a brandnew rootfs on the first RAID device, label it rootfs)

OK. Let me know if I can help in adjusting the envs to boot Option 2. I also think it is the best.
