Billy,

Your logs are very hard to read (with extra control chars). Are you using Putty? if you are, try copy/paste the log to a .txt file in Windows.

=====

RTC is not working.

8.951805][    T1] rtc-s35390a 0-0030: error resetting chip
8.958037][    T1] rtc-s35390a: probe of 0-0030 failed with error -5

I'm not sure if this 413j use the same RTC s35390a chip as 411 and ds413jv10. It does not look like so.

Boot into stock OS and capture dmesg log. Please post it in a separate post, or use pastebin.

=====

SATA:

At u-boot prompt do

ide reset

See how many HDDs are initialized.

=========

USB in u-boot:

At u-boot prompt do

usb start

See if we can make USB is available (why we need to boot kernel with tftp).

=====

HDD rootfs:

- With the 2 working HDDs only. Boot with USB rootfs. Log into Debian as root.
- Create a 100GB partition on HDD1, and create the rootfs the same way you did with USB rootfs.
- And shut down, unplug the USB drive, boot exactly the same way you did with tftp.

There is something that annoyed me but maybe we can't find why ? The mac address seems to be different when booting on debian because my dhcp doesn't give my nas the ip reserved but another one. Can you find why ? If we are sure that the "new mac address" won't change, i can change my dhcp to match the new one.

i don't have :

ide reset
ide
usb start

with my u-boot

Is it simple to update u-boot ? how do you save the old u-boot to restore if it's not working ?

I want to try to format the first disk (only two disks inserted) but either if i'm able to boot (with 3 or 4 i can't, i'm blocked in a loop)
but there is no hdd detected and sometimes i have this error :

For my disk, on DSM, i delete all volume groups and the 4 disks are without any errors, healthy

Stock OS boot log does not show RTC either. That's strange.

From your bootlog, the MAC address is the same, ethaddr=00:50:43:3c:xx:xx in u-boot and Debian. So that's not why the router give out different IP addr. Looks like stock OS change the MAC address.

BTW, the MAC address is private info, the IP address is not (it's local address). So you should blank a few digits when posting MAC address.

In Debian do

ifconfig -a

Not a simple task.

And to save current u-boot you would use nanddump (for NAND flash) to back up the u-boot MTD partition (usually mtd0). This box has SPI flash, you would use dd to back up mtd0. And then run kwboot to boot the box over UART using the backup image. If you can kwboot and see the u-boot running in memory, then it is safe to mess with u-boot.

Use one HDD only for now to see it boot OK. We'll come back to this subject.

As you said, DSM may change the mac address so i modified it on my dhcp reservation. So it's ok. Thanks

I read other DTS and i don't find any reference of sata inside the DS413j dts. Is it normal ?

Waiting for your help to find what to do next.

It is normal since there are 2 internal SATA ports defined in kirkwood-synology.dtsi, which the ds413j includes. And I've checked GPL sources, they match.

I forgot to ask you: see if there is scsi command in stock u-boot.
scsi reset

Looks like we will need to dig a bit deepper. I will write some commands for you to try.

Billy,

With all 4 HDDS in the slots, boot with USB rootfs. Interrupt serial console and,

Repeat the display commands
md.l 0xF1010100 1
md.l 0xF1010140 1
And then run modify commands
mw.l 0xF1010100 0x40008000
mw.l 0xF1010140 0x00003AA4

And then wait about 5 seconds (listen to hear if any spinup noise), and continue to boot with tftp. See if any of the HDDs will spin up.

what do you mean by interrupt the serial console ?
Do you mean to exit minicom ? or do you mean to stop the boot ?

When i try to boot with 4 hdds with usb roofs, it looped everytime. I try to quit minicom and come back but it showed me the loop again. I tried ctrl + A + F to interrupt but not working

i tried but nothing seems to happen

BTW, when i booted with usb, i have one or more disks that spins because i have vibrations. When i reload the device and i'm stucked in u-boot, no vibration

That was just normal speaking for typing something to stop u-boot countdown and get to the u-boot prompt!

Ok. Let's do this slowly to see which HDD works

With only 1st HDD in the slot, boot with USB rootfs. Interrupt serial console and,

md.l 0xF1010100 1
md.l 0xF1010140 1
mw.l 0xF1010100 0x40008000
mw.l 0xF1010140 0x00003AA4
And boot.

=====

And repeat the test with a single HDD in the 2nd slot.
And repeat the test with a single HDD in the 3rd slot.
And repeat the test with a single HDD in the 4th slot.
