Debian on ARM Cortex A9
April 07, 2024 04:14AM
Dear Community, thank you very much for your invested time in trying to help us get the most out of our hardware.

I would need your help in installing Debian on an Arm Cortex A9 with touch screen monitor (monitor is from Sigmatek company).
Till now, I have the following information (see also attached pictures):

- it seems to have a Linux installed on it, it runs from a micro-sd card with 3 partitions, bootldr containing uImage and uRamdisk files, a C partition containing (I think) the program from the manufacturer and a system which should be the Linux.
- it is booting from the card, but I think that the Linux is limited in some ways because I can't use all the commands like in a standard Linux.

I'm attaching some pictures, and I've found a some kind of boot-log also.

Hi Chris,

Sorry, I don't have any IMX6 board, so I have not built kernel for this architecture.

Hopefully others will have info for you.

That would be nice. I would really appreciate that

Nobody out there who would like a challenge?

Or maybe just start me in the write way?

Based on the following from your boot log:

Jan  1 00:00:30 sigmatek-arm user.info kernel: Machine: Freescale i.MX6 Quad/DualLite (Device Tree), model: Sigmatek TT1933-S Board

The device you have is likely this one SigmTek TT1933-S. I would suggest searching their website for newer firmware or contacting them to see if they have an updated SDK for the device. Failing that you could extract the DTS and attempt to update it to current standards.

I have the DTB file which is on the card
Do you mean this?
And how to extract?

If I delete all the files from the system partition and copy from a Debian install CD and also the DTBS folder, then it does not boot at all ...
Re: Debian on ARM Cortex A9

Do you know how to build Linux kernel from source? Are you familiar with Device Tree Compiler? What I was suggesting was to either obtain the actual device tree source (.dts) file or as a last resort using the Device Tree Compiler tool to de-compile the DTB file to create a DTS file. Once you have a DTS it will likely need updating as what you have is for kernel 3.10.53 and you'll need to determine how the i.MX6 device trees have changed since that time and incorporate those changes. If you do not have experience with building bootable images for i.MX6 based devices you should probably do some research into how that is accomplished.

Your best bet is to see if the manufacturer has an available SDK which would save considerable time and effort. I'm not familiar with that vendor, but a vendor with a similar product has resources that covers booting and building distributions for its product at https://docs.embeddedts.com/TS-TPC-7990 which might prove helpful if your vendor doesn't provide similar documentation. You'll have to determine how your product differs from this system, but this should give you some hints on what to look for and how to build the various components of U-Boot and Linux.

Dear rayknight,
I've written them an Email, but I don't think they will help.

I'm not familiar at all
I know only basics on Linux, when it comes to special I need point to point guidance.

I was thinking it would be easier to deal with this since there is already some kind of Linux on the card.

Thanks!

I have found the DTB file
How do I go on?

Thanks

I have also found an LBI file which contains the "Linux" that is also on the SD card
and also a lot of DTB files inside

I’ve tried to build a Linux kernel using the NXP guide but no luck. It won’t boot from the card
NXP

Also tried various pins to search for the UART (lost 2 days) with no luck

Any suggestions?

I have found a way to access a console
the showenv is giving the following readings:

CONSOLE=/dev/console
SHELL=/bin/sh
TERM=linux
prevlevel=N
INIT_VERSION=sysvinit-2.88
CPUname=`TT
PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
runlevel=S
RUNLEVEL=S
PWD=/
VERBOSE=no
PREVLEVEL=N
previous=N
FirstUsbDrive=E
SHLVL=2
HOME=/
_=/home/root/LRTConfig.exe
LIBC_FATAL_STDERR_=1
DISPLAY=:0
SRAMFORMAT=2

I have tried to create a SD card with Buildroot, Uboot, Yocto but nothing works.
It just won't boot

Please advise.

Many thanks!
