Jan_Grz1,

Arch Linux ARM has stopped support for the Kirkwod SoCs. Why not switch to Debian? is there any particular reason you've chosen to run Arch?

Here is how to boot Debian rootfs with stock u-boot.

Jan_Grz1,

Your envs are incorrect.

Power up, interrupt u-boot countdown on serial console, enter the setenvs command as stated in the instruction, and then

printenv
boot
And post the entire serial console log here.

Jan_Grz1,

Which DTB file you used to create the uImage in Step 4?

Quote
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096
4. (Stock u-boot only) Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Skip this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time, or running kwboot with latest u-boot image).

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box (see the folder /media/sdb1/boot/dts for the exact spelling of your Kirkwood box name).

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-6.5.7-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-6.5.7-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

Jan_Grz1,

The iomega_ix2_200.dtb is the wrong one.

https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/Iomega

Rootfs /boot/dts

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 11964 Feb 12 10:00 kirkwood-iomega_ix2_200.dtb
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13124 Feb 12 10:00 kirkwood-lenovo-ix2-dl.dtb
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13053 Feb 12 10:00 kirkwood-lenovo-ix2-ng.dtb

Try the kirkwood-lenovo-ix2-ng.dtb.

Jan_Grz1,

Right at the beginning, the USB drive failed to spin up. What happend after that is irrelevant.

I guess this stock u-boot is flaky (some old Kirkwood stock u-boots are) with USB port. Try cold start (remove/attach power cord) to see if it can spin up the drive successfully.

If a cold start has the same failure, try this

- Cold start
- Interrupt u-boot countdown and do the initialization a few times.
usb start
usb start

or
usb reset
usb reset

And after the usb storage device is detected,
usb info
and then go ahead and boot like you did.

Output of ext2ls was not good. /boot/uImage was not listed.

This u-boot seems flaky. "usb start" spins up the drive, but it seems to take a long time. Try this

help
usb start
echo Waiting for all USB drives to spin up.................................................. ;
ext2ls usb 0:1 /boot

Have you verified the uImage file is actually there? I haven't seen anything in the thread showing it existing. Likewise I don't see output from the mkimage command etc. This looks more like the file just not being present than some sort of IO error at first glance.

But yes, it's a good idea to take the rootfs to another Linux box and verify that it's there, to be sure.

Re: Arch Linux on Lenovo ix2 NAS stuck at Starting kernel

Jan_Grz1,

You need to recreate the rootfs using the kirkwood-lenovo-ix2-ng.dtb in Step 4.

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

Quote

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-6.5.7-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-lenovo-ix2-ng.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-6.5.7-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

If your Linux box does not have mkimage, then install it
apt-get install u-boot-tools

The problem above is because you're trying to unmount while still inside the rootfs folder. You must change directory to another place before unmounting. For example,
cd /

[ 18.866979][ T180] EXT4-fs (sdc1): mounting ext3 file system using the ext4 subsystem
[ 18.930224][ T180] EXT4-fs (sdc1): mounted filesystem 200d8649-5760-4fff-b27f-bcb70b904b65 ro with ordered data mode. Quota mode: none.
done.
Begin: Running /scripts/local-bottom ... done.
Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ... done.
mount: mounting /run on /root/run failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory

The error above usally is because the rootfs is bad.

====

Repeat the rootfs creation and post the entire log of what you did here. I'll look it over.

I have always managed to get to this point without any problems, but then it hangs up and does nothing. by the way, I connect to a Linux VM via Solar Putty. In the meantime it shows error messages in the VM. (to be seen in the screenshot). Sometimes it works when I try again, but sometimes not.

Now it has worked.
